This piece of "common knowledge" is completely untrue. There is no evidence or formal study confirming it, and how would it even be quantified?
OT: I would love to never think about sex, and I really never do. Like you said, I don't see from a logical standpoint why I should ever engage in intercourse. I don't want to get married, the Earth is crowded enough as it is, and it is a complete waste of brain power. I have never had sex, and can see myself remaining celibate for the rest of my life.

No sex for a year? :C That's kinda lame; I have a pretty high sex drive. It's one thing if I go a year without being in a relationship... things tend to settle down (or shut down completely, in some cases) when I'm not in pursuit of anyone or being pursued. So, I guess what I'm saying is that it'd be lame, but I'd be alright with it if I were single. Sex isn't really a huge deal to me unless I'm involved with someone romantically.

Wouldn't really change much other than maybe a little bit of unproductive "zone out" time at work, which ultimately would just be swapped to thinking about other things, like when I'd daydream about gaming or cars or whatever else as a kid.

I don't really go to clubs, certainly not to meet women. As it stands if I get horny and my gf is busy, I'll just go beat it to some porn otherwise I'll seduce her and do the naughty... either way... it's fun. And it's not getting in the way of anything. I'm not a nympho or sex addict.

To be entirely honest, I think sex is way over rated. (Not relationships or intimacy, just sex itself). I don't think a vag feels all that much better on my weiner than Palm-ela. Maybe a little warmer ;). Boobs are great tho. And having someone else do the work. But yah, it's just sex. There's a lot more good stuff out there.

It would be very different, though I can't say whether I'd like it better.

No sex drive doesn't sound all that bad actually. I mean, I used to be somewhat ashamed that I was in my early 20s and had never so much as had a single relationship, but after getting out of an unpleasant relationship with my ex I honestly don't care if it takes me a long time get into another relationship or if I end up being the 40 year old virgin.

And by unpleasant, I don't mean abusive. So clingy!

I'm a girl and I haven't had sex in 2 months and it's driving me crazy. Me and my friends (they're mostly male) always make sexual jokes and inuendos. Without them life would be boring.

Think about it rationally , most things boils down to sex , sex appeal and being sucsessful to be above (in your own mind) every other adverage joe walking around.

You might not think you have a sex drive , but you do , because its the only thing that makes a human being a human being.

Competition , fashion .... hell even how you look at yourself in the mirrow is all down to sex and sexual appeal, you cant say youv ever tried to act cool around a girl or got a new shirt to think "il look F***ing good in this"

i totally agree not everythings about sex , but you cant think that its not at the very least boils down to half on a males psyche

Em, I think there's this drug that does just that that they issue to paedophiles
There is also special types of milk that they feed prisoners. It lowers testosterone and reduces sex drive.

I'd love to be able to deactivate my sex drive. It does me little good anyway. I fail at relationships, I haven't really been in one in quite a long time. I have no real clue how to pursue relationships, I don't know how to date. I'm 29 years old and I've gone my whole life sex-less (unless you count onesomes). Come to think of it, I'd like to be activate all my emotions, they are nothing but a distraction.

Personally I...

Think about:

Computer games
*******************************

Alcohol
***********

Work
******

Sex
***

That might translate to one or two sex thoughts a day, and that only if you include thoughts such as "Hmm, she's hot"

At the risk of sticking my can of worms into Pandora's Box: Freud thought everyone was motivated by a purely sexual impulse - then again, he was cocaine abusing house-wife f***er. Carl Jung thought it was a more general creative impulse. I don't know: maybe sex and creativity (working on other projects and hobbies) can be separated out from each other. No need to push all that stuff into one pool.

As to the original question - going a year without sex, and whether or not we are extra-motivated to do things by the prompting of the opposite sex, I'd have to say personally that yes, I could go (and have gone, at times) more than a year, and yes, the other sex makes you do stuff you wouldn't normally do.

*Facepalm* I know it is a myth. I was merely using a common phrase to ease into the subject.

I for one would. The extinction of the human race is something I quite look forward to on a personal level.

That said, the rest of you wouldn't be around to enjoy all these "benefits" that you list since no more humans would be born if no man or woman ever considered having sex again... Unless we'd evolve a form of procreation akin to mitosis of course (which is pretty unlikely) :p

life would be boring, and i dont mean without sex, but the things iv done in relation to sex have been some off the greatest experiences iv ever had, rock festivals, mountain climbing, camping trips, my sex drive gets the credit for the greatest memoires i have, wouldnt traded them for anything. but some off the worst also come from that but the good will always outway the bad. i think losing sex would be like loseing the spice of life,

reminds me of a joke.
a man goes to the doctors, and asks " doctor, would i live longer if he gave up sex, women and alcohol". the doctor says, "No, it will just feel like longer because it will be so dull"

I agree with some of the people here, my sex drive has lead me to some pretty awesome experiences. I couldn't cut my sex drive from my life cuz I'm a little horny bastard. And I haven't had sex in like 6 months due to being in a campus of guys so I have very little interactions with girls and it is driving me bloody insane! Well, actually I just keep meeting girls with bfs as well, that doesn't really help either, I may be horny but I have morals.... and I forgot where I was going with this. I may actually be done. I don't even know.

Surely that wou;d be completely impossible as we couldn't evolve without reproducing first?

Bar spontaneous mutations induced by radiation of some sort (extremely improbable even if it isn't entirely impossible), or artificial methods like gene therapy developed by human hands: Yes. It would be impossible.

If you did, you woudln't be a horny little bastard anymore.

If you took away your sex drive, being in a campus of guys only and ultimately having extremely little interaction with women wouldn't drive you insane. It just wouldn't matter that much to you since your sex rive no longer has that choke hold on you.

Now do you understand the benefits in removing it that a lot of people see in this thread? :)
