Explosions. There hasn't been a single hollywood movie that has gotten explosions right. People are standing right next to big (and little) blasts and getting knocked back a little - when in reality, they would die from all their organs liquifying.

Worst example: Mission Impossible 3, on the bridge. Tom Cruise runs away from a Missile explosion that hits about 5 metres behind him, and all that happens is he gets thrown into a car.
At that distance he should have been dead, not mildly inconvenienced.
Depends on a few factors... even though the standard radius for most air to ground missiles is 100m to be safe, people have survived being around 5 meters away...

but I agree though, movies are rediculous and take it to the wrong level!!

It is pretty much a given that Hollywood is going to get science, tech, and details about culture and subcultures wrong much more often then they get them right. Part of this is because of what is referred to as the 'coconut effect', though others are just because most people with knowledge of things other than writing will go into fields other than writing.

Here's a list of some things that bother me that I don't believe have been mentioned yet.

-Ninjas wearing dark black clothing. Even at night, wearing black will get you spotted without too much difficulty. Often for stealth plain clothes work best, because people are usually among other people, and most people wear plain clothes and not Hollywood-Ninja-Stagehand costumes. Well at least they are not...

-Ninjas wearing very obvious clothing. Orange jumpsuits and other such things.

-The idea that magic has to be unexplainable, if magic violates scientific principles that we are accustomed with, that is fine, but don't say that because something is magic it can just blindly violate any law, theory, or theorem that it wants.

-On that note: Science is not the opposite of magic, you can apply science to magic and it can easily still be considered magic. The two are not at ends, and the idea of scientists and magicians being warring factions is absurd.

-I just generally don't like how Hollywood handles magic. Even characters that are supposed to be cunning only use magic for straightforward attacks. That is, the magic tends to be impractical, and used inefficiently and uncreatively. For example: Fireballs.

-Hypotheses, Laws, Theories, and Theorems are not to be confused with each other.

-Scientists are not overzealous people unable to even consider implausible things. Likewise, not all scientists are atheists/nihilists/misotheists. It is blatantly unscientific to blindly dismiss things, however Occam's Razor tends to be applied.

-One last thing, because this is starting to get way, way too long: Occam's Razor. Characters in Hollywood movies and shows often tend to jump to absurd conclusions, and be correct to boot, with little or no explanation of how or why they reached such a conclusion.

One thing that really annoys me is when any film tries to include or is based on Greek mythology, and then just tears the stories apart. For example, The Immortals. As far as pure action was concerned, that movie was awesome. PEOPLES' HEADS EXPLODED. However, holy crap they got the mythology wrong in so many ways. The only points that I remember vividly are:

1) Titans are not tribal men with really dry skin on speed. They were huge, powerful beings who fathered the gods. Also, there are only like 12 of them. Not the unlimited amount the movie displayed.

2) In the movie, Zeus and Athena appeared to have a lot of sexual tension. While the Zeus of Greek mythology pretty much had sex with anything that moved, Athena was his daughter. There was no romantic relations between the two of them whatsoever.

I dunno, maybe I just like Greek mythology too much. Either way, Hollywood sucks at keeping the facts straight

I lol'd :p
I am also sure that he planned for the other effects of said magnetic fields (the ones that tried to chow the city) too :D I guess this is why we should never analyse movies, because they look really really stupid really really fast :(

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet but the two things that bug me to the point of insanity are what happens when Hollywood takes a game or book and Completely screws with the facts and the bloody story that has already been set

For example of a book movie that annoyed the hell out of me:
Eragon: Even if it was going to make the movie 3 hours i want ALL of the book in it, at least 200 pages are missing and they were the most important facts and screwed with the plot progression. Also the first elf I remember reading about in the book had BLONDE HAIR not brunette, this still annoys me

For example of a game movie that went the the completely opposite direction of accurate:
Doom (The film): In the game (Ive played and still play every game so I bloody know what Im talking about) you are being attacked by demons from hell (take note of this). You have to shoot your way through them on a special facility on mars and then survive fighting through hell as well (if you have never played this game do it now :p Not that they are spoilers or anything it should be common knowledge). In the film they substitute hell for an alien virus and removed any mention of hell at all, they basically made Resident evil on mars (and Resident evil was better)
The BFG 9000 was not the "bio force gun" it was the "BIG FUCKING GUN" (im aware that the rock says that but i dont really give a dam)
Where were half the monsters ? "reverent, cacodemon, hell knight, ect.
Where did the fucking virus come from ?
HOW DID THEY GET SOMETHING THAT WAS 12 YEARS OLD AND PRACTICALLY SET IN STONE? (Because caps will clearly get my point across XD)

Rant over

The first episode of the Walking Dead had main character guy (never got into the show, don't know his name) light a match he found int the hospital. What hospital has matches? Everything is far too flamable for that to be lagal.

I am bothered far too much by modern horse shoes (especially corrective or aluminum shoes or shoes with pads under them) on horses in movies set before they were invented.

While I understand that:
a) most people don't know a regular shoe from a bar shoe or one with clips
b) most people can't tell a contemporary shoe from a 12th century shoe
c) most people don't know what the bottom of a horse's foot actually looks like (without a pad)
and most importantly:
d) running horses around on stony/slick/hard ground without shoes isn't great for them.. which is the reason shoes were invented in the first place..

...at least take them out in post production, especially if you're going to show close-ups of the horses' legs/hooves as they run!

Also, "ahead of its time" bitting/bridles (or improper bitting) and getting saddles wrong is a big source of annoyance for me.

So the question I put to you, what are some examples that make you take the latter path, (be it obvious mistakes the character makes, problems with the accuracy of the movie, obvious scientific wrongness, cannon rape, etc.)?
Oh...those poor cannons! Will nobody think of the cannons?
...It's 'canon'. Not 'cannon', despite how it's sounds phonetically.

Anyhow, blatant disregard for the little things, like, say, logic, cause and effect, and not having plot-holes.
Glad to see I wasn't the only one who noticed that.
Now that I've slept, I can see that you're right, and it has been remedied. *hangs head in shame*

Another thing that irritates me. When you're making a movie, and it has battle scenes, I would greatly appreciate there to be more than one or two people taking on the forces of darkness (or whatever the fuck they are in the movie). I find it so irritating when there is one or two "badasses" who just cut through every mook the bad guy throws at them. Sure, this happens a lot in action movies, and its somewhat understandable that the hero is the supreme badass, but still one man (or woman) cannot kill hundreds upon hundreds of people (who, by the way should have at least some sort of military training, considering they have apparently been ravaging the world/country/city).

Hollywood does not know how computers, or computer games, work.

This does not stop them from creating their own games, hackers, computer experts, hardware, etc.

Particularly with games, I understand, licensing costs money. But seriously, you could put a little more effort into it...

This, and scenes like it, are what really grind my gears.
Also the movie "Hackers" because we all know when you hack the world becomes Tron
Ok, I dislike the misinformation people get from movies about how "hacking" works. But think of it like this... the average person who may own a PC doesn't necessarily know how the thing works. For all they know, and for all they'll care to learn, "hacking" is all CGI nonsense, whether or not its true. And the other side of it, Hollywood isnt' about to put 3 hours of boring scenes of a guy typing commands into a non-GUI O/S, its boring. Must have flashies or the normal people will leave movie and demand refund.
Watch death note. If a director can make writing names in a book look dramatic and exiting, I don't think it'll be much harder when typing in commands.

OT: I don't know if it fits here, but I'm just so sick of how they try to portray smart people : By having them being good at math. Yes, high level mathematics is difficult, but it's not the only thing, and being good at it will not solve every difficulty that you will face in life. I remember an old episode of Duck Tales, where some cave man got really smart (I.E, knew high level mathematics), and somehow used math to solve which of two possible paths they should take in a crossroad. It's just silly and insulting.

That shit makes me rage. Because it's the exact fucking OPPOSITE in real life.
So you are saying getting shot in the leg or sholder is instant death?

No, of course it isn't "instant death". I was being over-dramatic.

But being shot in the leg or shoulder is waaaaaay more fatal that being shot in the torso.

Though if you get shot in the femoral artery, which is in the leg, it pretty much is instant death, since you'll bleed to death in a few seconds.

Pretty much everything about the Wing Commander movie, but specifically the scene where the ship is hiding in a crater, and this somehow makes them invisible to enemy scanners, but they have to be quiet because those same scanners can somehow detect sound waves through a vacuum.

Didn't The Other guys do a bit on that? Here, let me pull up a clip

Also, I'm willing to excuse the "no sound in space" thing if it serves to increase dramatic tension and the movie/show doesn't make pretensions about absolute sci-fi realism. Think about it, would the original Star Wars movies have really been improved upon if they just cut out all the TIE fighter/X-Wing engine and laser canon noises?

For the things that do get to me though, it's how non incendiary grenades and bullets can just casually cause cars, gas stations, and propane tanks to explode. Here's an It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia clip that makes fun of this misconception:

This did not anger me, but I did think it was stupid...

I forgot which episode it was, but on Law and Order: SVU a man claimed to be raped by three women. Benson wanted to investigate, but Stabler resisted, saying things like 'men can't be raped by women unless they've been drugged' and 'If he gets an erection, it's consent'. I'm paraphrasing of course. I don't agree with him, but that's not what I thought was stupid: No one mentioned that if he had fought these three women, chances are, he would be the defendant and they would be pressing charges against him. To the average person, saying "I had too, they were going to tie me down and rape me," makes as much sense as "I had too, they were going to chop me up and eat me."

It's been a while since I saw that episode, so I might not have the details right, but I do remember saying to myself "That's stupid"

Invisible people (by way of science) being able to see.

Shouldn't they be blind seeing as their retina can't pick up light, being invisible and all.
