water levels are OK, the Lakebed Temple in Twilight Princess was a good level
Did you ever play the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time? It rapes you up the ass if you don't know how to do it...
i've completed that game many, many times. done the Master Quest 3 times, too. granted, Water Temple is an arse but my biggest gripe is having to go to the equipment screen to put on/take off the iron boots.

I like first person water levels (usually)I had no problem with the water zones in, say, world of warcraft. I HATE third person water levels like the ones in Mario or banjo-kazooie because I never am able to get the angels right and the character winds up moving in a direction slightly to the left or right of the object I need to touch.

Nobody likes water levels? Hmmm, I'd never thought of that before, although I suppose it does make sense and sounds about right. I mean, it explains perfectly why this game didn't sell well and never got a sequel:
This does not count as a water level. Here, people are defining water levels as anywhere you actually have to interact with the water.

The one water level I can think of is the airboat chapter in Half-life 2, and to be honest I found it quite fast-paced, intense and fun.

Edit: Ooh! Wait! I've got another one, when you've got to go into those caves to do that research for the woman writing the book in Megaton in Fallout 3, and I guess that sort of sucked, but I guess it is more to do with those hermit-crab things (I forget the name) than the water itself.

I like the zelda ocarina of time water level. Mostly because it was one of the hardest levels, it was a maze. Zelda Majoras mask also had some fun water levels.
Water levels I hated would be the Tomb raider ones. They were so annoying constantly ran out of oxygen because the controls were so crappy underwater.

It was a joke.

LoZ: Twilight Princess had a pretty good Water Temple, compared to that of OoT.

Ever since I played JAck ad Daxter when I was in 1st grade I have had an ever-growing fear of water in video games I have only recently gotten over.

I mean, SERIOUSLY! It tells you that swimming in water = eaten by giant pirahnnas, then turns around and tells you at almost every turn that you have to go through water to beat the level. >.<

But yeah, for those who have played some of the older games... Water = fear like the plague in most cases.

I've seen a few games pull it off, but not very often.

EDIT: Well, I've also got a problem with the "totally helpless underwater" or "can only hurt things this way" deals, such as how magic only works with touch attacks underwater.

I want a game where you get a spear gun for water levels. Seriously, would you go into enemy-infested waters without a weapon that works underwater?

The only water level I don't like is the Water Temple...in Majora's Mask. I love both the Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess one.

Turok 2 on the N64 had that. It had some memorable weapons, peroid. Cerebral Bore, anyone?

I always used to dread the underwater bits in older Tomb Raider levels, because they'd invariably try to make the tunnels 'realistic', which would mean Lara would get stuck on edges and in corners and drown. And of all the deaths she could suffer in Tomb Raider, I always found the drowning animation to be the creepiest.

*shudder*

The only 'water levels' I like are in MH3, and even then I never finished that game (left it for assignments for a bit and went back to start a new game and found that I could only use SnS, which I'd done the last time).

Tomb Raider (assorted) also had a harpoon gun that you could (indeed, *needed* to) take into shark infested waters =)

C'mon guys, Bioshock! Although I don't suppose that counts...

The Killer Croc boss fight in the new Batman game was horrible though, horrible!

For me it goes back to Super Mario Bros, where the water levels where the most annoying in the game. You never felt like you had complete control where you wanted to go. Going up was easy, just spam the jump button, but going down was a *****, sinking is just too slow.

If the water levels weren't there to make me snap the games controller in half, kick my television out of the window, burn the house down, and piss on the ashes, I wouldn't feel nearly as challenged.

Christ that was terrible.

Also the part with the fucking alien sharks in the first Half-Life. I was scarred for LIFE.

EDIT: Whoops, quoted the wrong guy. Who I wanted to quote was:

Here's why people don't like water levels. I mean, it's basically a pavlovs dog reaction - but kinda in reverse, I suppose.

Seriously, it's loud. I once made someone shriek from across the house by playing this sound at them.

Water = that noise = OH GODS FIND A BUBBLE = NOOOOOOO! That's why Hydrocity is exempt, because bubble shields are everywhere.
