I think they're a good idea when used on dangerous individuals.

However I also believe that that there use on organised protests is dangerous to our personal freedoms, as it creates news friendly oppression. Years ago, lethal force was the way of disbanding a determined protest. As shown in the French and Russian revolution (and even during the Vietnam war), a regime that was willing to use lethal force on their own citizents would eventually collapse. In the modern age we can water cannon, tear gas and soon heat ray crowds into submission without drastically damaging the governments image.
There are also pepper and Stench balls (related to paint balls). The pepper balls are really better for small numbers, but the stench balls are... Well, they make walking up to a skunk and stuffing your nose up it's arse seem like a rose garden.

I think my favorite non-lethal weapon's got to be the sticky-shocker.

A different concept is the Sticky Shocker, developed by Titan, with DARPA's support. This wireless shocker can be launched by M203 or M79 rifles, as well as 37mm non lethal launcher. Sticky Shocker clings to a human target inflicting an electrical stun. Effective at up to 10 meters, the projectile contains a battery which excites several short high voltage pulses (50KV) per second.

Ye our police have pepper spary at the max, I think it is a little unfair that they do not get guns.

Our government is trying to pass a new law which means that our police can not even swear at suspects, or so I heard.

Because no weapon causes more long term damage than hurt feelings.

Well, in Canada, the RCMP have guns, and tasers...

...well...as it turns out the taser is not as nonlethal as you'd think if used incorrectly.

Big hullabaloo over -that- I tell you.

Welcome to Canada... we set our Tasers to Kill.
Just like Australia... Except our guys didn't intentionally kill with tasers...

I once saw a video of a specialised shotgun round that delivers an electric shock upon impact.

That's right. A gun that shoots stunguns. I think that's my favorite.

Edit:

That's what I was talking about!

I rember when I was 5 or 6 I had one of those trick shock pens that zap you when you press the button. I remeber chasing my sister around the house and zaping her with it, works a treat.

(Occassionally supplemented by a few lumps of metal clenched in said fist...)
Actually, many police depts consider a closed fist punch to the face to be considered lethal force.

Police in the UK do not carry guns. Only armed response teams do usually. Police equipment consists of Baton (extendable I think) and Handcuffs. Theres other stuff like radio and so on but thats about in in terms of weapons.
Actually, airport police carry firearms and tasers. Plus there are firearms officer around london with weapons seperate from the armed response, typically in spots where terrorists might target. Standard beat bobbies carry extendable batton, cuffs and mace plus the radios, rubber gloves etc.

Ok thanks for the info. I'm not anywhere near London so I don't know what the procedures are there.

On the part of a police officer, or the part of a civilian?

In Norway the police keep an MP5 locked away in their cars for "special ocations", usually they don't carry any weapons at all.
Norway is awesome lol. Those "luke lights" sound really cool. And my name is Luke... Mind hooking me up with one, they're mine. Also, laser tag!

I'm pretty sure we call them Luke lights because they kind of remind people of Light Sabers.
