Portal is the best, it is unique and fun. Left 4 Dead is great when I have friends over. It was made for the multiplayer experience.

Left 4 dead. Becuase I never get tired of killing zombies. Portal is a close second(Any game that causes me to laugh must get some credit.) followed By Hl2.

That's a tough choice, I guess it depends on what you mean by 'best'.

If you mean which was best for when it came out, Half-Life 1.
If you mean which one I personally enjoyed most, Half-Life 2.
And if you mean which one I've gotten the most entertainment value from, Team Fortress 2.

L4D, Portal, and HL2 all amazing, but none would have happened if Valve hadn't broken the mold with the original. HL classic did for FPS what Starcraft did for RTS, brought their chosen genres the respect of the masses. Say what you will about mass appeal, because the millions that bought the originals aren't listening.

And don't forget Gmod!
Garry's Mod wasn't made by Valve, Team Garry made Garry's Mod, they just use Valve models and maps and textures, that's why Valve gets half the profit of Gmod.
Wasn't made by Valve, but Half-Life 2 was the base for it. Look at the post I replied to.

For me, it was a tossup between TF2, Portal, HL, and HL2. TF2 is just plain amazing- I love the idea of separate classes. Portal was awesome, fun, and challenging- it was also just long enough to stay fun without dragging on or getting boring. Half-Life(1) was, simply put, nothing short of a revolutionary FPS for its time, and is still a wonderful game (Of course, that could just be the nostalgia factor talking). HL2 was an adventure- Ravenholm, Nova Prospekt, the Citadel, I loved it all. I found the narrative to be particularly enthralling as well. On the other hand, I have to disagree with MiracleOfSound- the allies' AI needed improvement (Excluding Alyx's AI, which was great). When a grenade was in close proximity to my rebel team mates, they would practically CLUSTER around it. So FRUSTRATING! However, the game was still entertaining even with that problem.

In the end, I had to go with HL2. I just enjoyed it more than the other games.

This describes perfectly, I haven't actually played HL1 :S But I still agree with you.

Portal easily

Then HL2.
Then HL1.

I think people are getting mixed up between their favorite and which is the best. TF2 is by no means the best. It may be my favorite of their games at the moment, but by no means is it their best game. Its basically the same as any other team fortress game just a lot better and fun to play.

L4D is one of their games that has the largest price tag and the least content.

CSS and DoDS which Valve made are have barely any difference to the HL1 mods that they didnt make..

Kind of a tie:

Half life / Half Life 2 = engaging storyline and the games kinda revolutionalised gaming (more for 1 than 2 though)
Portal = Very fun game, dark humor + fun puzzles = good game :)
Team Fortress 2 = Best multiplayer experience I've had in a while

I still voted for TF2 though, for the replayability plus

Left 4 Dead had me hooked for days and days and days, unfortunately for those that love me Left 4 Dead 2 will do the same thing most likely.

Some of the best friendly AI ever seen in a game...
Ive seen the AI be quite thick at times. Not that they're really needed with Freemans Invins-o-suit and all.
I voted portal because out of all the above games its the one I enjoyed most. I enjoyed them all but portal was the most fun.
Agreed, the friendly soldiers are rather thick, especially when they are in a doorway you need to get through...

Alyx is who I was referring to though and she is just awesome.

HL1. The other games are great, but nothing captured the zeitgeist like the original.

I voted for Left 4 Dead... before I saw Portal.
Either of two - both are absolutely fantastic and polished to a mirror shine.

It was a tough call between HL2 and Portal. I finally chose HL2 because it is longer, but, it was a tough decision. Portal wins writing category, and best ending song EVER!!!
