North Korea routinely threatens war in response to joint military exercises by the two long-time allies, calling them a rehearsal for war.

But tensions have been high for the past two months, since the US and South Korea accused the North of torpedoing a warship with the loss of 46 lives. The North denies involvement and says the "smear campaign" is a pretext for aggression.

The United States and South Korea have begun four-day joint exercises -- the first in a series -- in what they say is a bid to deter North Korea's "aggressive" behaviour.

In a show of force, Seoul and Washington began the exercise involving 200 aircraft, 8,000 service personnel and 20 ships including an aircraft carrier in the Sea of Japan. The drill is the first in a series intended "to send a clear message to North Korea that its aggressive behaviour must stop", US Defence Secretary Robert Gates and South's Defence Minister Kim Tae-Young said in a joint statement this week after talks.

South Korea and the United States, citing findings of a multinational investigation, accuse the North of sending a submarine to torpedo a South Korean warship near the tense Yellow Sea border in March.
Basically, the US and South Korean governments are going to do military exercises to deter North Korea's agression.
I suspect that they are trying to scare North Korea with their military force into stopping them from taking any further actions against South Korea.
I believe that no decisions have been made yet whether or not the military exercises are going to continue, but it would surely defeat any purpose if they're trying to stop North Korea from taking action since North Korea will unleash a nuclear war if they do those exercises.

The discussion here is: "Who do you side with and what should happen?

Normally, I'd side with the US, but I've lost a heck of a lot of trust in them since the child porn scandal in the Pentagon.
North Korea might always be seen as either "the enemy" or "the insane ones", but how do you know for sure?
It's like saying that all Americans are fat and stupid.
I don't want there to be a nuclear war.
I just want the American government to stay the hell away from this.
This is between North and South Korea. I believe that the US' involvement will only throw more wood on the bonfire since they have a hostile relation with each North Korea.
Perhaps I'm missing something here, because I'm sure that the Americans are more educated on this matter than us Europeans, but I'd like to hear other people's thoughts.
pfft, North Korea are always threatening countries with nuclear war, 2 years ago they even threatened their own ally(China) of war. Bless 'em

Furthermore, even if they launched a missile at America, by the time it reaches America, several missiles will have been returned back to them by the US, and most likely other NATO forces, like most of the EU especially as we(the UK) are so up the American rear end. Even China is against them using Nuclear arms.

Plus I wouldn't be surprised if the US had agents in North Korea to make sure they can avert such an event

Actually, it's definitely the most advanced. As well as having the mobility advantage, by far. China may have a huge standing army (and they do), but, any standing army can be decimated by attacking any number of supply points.
Wait wait wait, you mean North Korea, in spite of it's isolation, has the most advanced army in the world? I thought that US had the most advanced army in the world - or i've suddenly landed in a parallel dimension where NK is the leader in weapon research and everyone has a goatee?

So what?
America's just going to nuke North Korea?
Yay, nuclear fallout for all of Korea.
I don't think that would bode so well for South Korea, not to mention the non-crazy population of North Korea.

Who would bother to nuke Canada? :p
Nobody, but we're close enough to the US to receive some nasty radioactive weather from accross the border. This would have me somewhat concerned, living in southwestern Ontario and all.
Why are you worried about Hamilton? Seriously, dude... just move. It stinks like... well, something, there.

Oh wait, I live in Edmonton. Carry on.

I personally don't want to be in a third war, but I have the feeling that North Korea's threats are empty. IF they have nukes, they are only short ranged balistics, being a stretch if they reach Japan, and don't have many of them. We have enough Nukes ready that we could eradicate the country in a matter of minutes. Going against the United States when your a small country like North Korea and you have no Allies, any tactical mind will tell you that going to war with the US will not end well.
I don't think anyone wants another war except of course NK.
I don't know about you but they don't really strike me as "tactical".
Kim'll blow up anything and it's probably not going to be America but South Korea.

How do we know for sure? This [http://www.vbs.tv/newsroom/vice-guide-to-north-korea-1-of-14] is how we know for sure. Watch all 14 parts, it's a very educational experience.

Tl;dr: Not only is NK the enemy or insane, but the most Orwellian regime to have ever existed in the history of mankind. Big Brother would've crapped his pants with pride.
Damn, it looks like they're on another planet.
I can't help but feel a bit respect for the amount of discipline displayed by those soldiers.
At first, I couldn't tell if they were real or not.
The reason that wrote that is because we can't be sure what's in there.
Who knows, 70 percent of the population might be dead and I don't think we'd be able to notice it.
I wonder if they allow sattelites to fly over their country...

I believe China would realize N. Korea's fault and allow the US to carry out they're exercises. If it escalates to nuclear war, The us has enough nukes to bury that country underneath 5 feet of radioactive ash.

FIRST TO GO, LAST TO KNOW, HOORAH MARINES.

You wouldn't?!
Do you know the kind of defense that North Korea has against intruders/spies?
I think they'd even catch a tourist's fart if it flew over the border.

*trying not to flame*
I don't believe the US would just launch nukes at N Korea if we were just threatened, this crazy yahoo has been threatening us ever since he rose to power. If we were attacked, we would take military action immediately.

OT: If the US was attacked, the US has a right to continue out military actions, until then, I'm not sure.

You have no idea do you... go onto youtube, type in "north korean work camps", listen to the statements from those who escaped, see the brutal scars of their tortures. The leader of north korea has concentration camps for those deemed "unloyal". Thousands die of hunger, disease and lack of basic resources. This man is a mass murderer, yes he IS insane, yes he IS the enemy, i hate to invoke a godwins but this man is a miniture hitler, he forces his subjects to worship him as a GOD!. It is not like saying americans are fat and stupid. Not at all. This is a statement of fact. The country is also very very anti american, i watched a programme where 2 doctors, one american and one canadian went to go help with cateracts, an operation not usually available. The american had to say he was canadian and they found american hate everywhere. The cameraman filmed a mother singing to a child about killing all americans. Im english and i think this whole place is sick. Dont nuke it, assassinate the leader. He has to be the most evil person currently alive.

Then again, I probably won't be the only one to do this in the event of nuclear war, so it might be smarter to just hang out in a state that won't get bombed as hard as any other state....
huummm... safe places???
Falkland islands
Madagascar
on of the many pacific islands
New-Zealand
the moon
The moon sounds cool and all, but what about Canada?

Also, on November 8th, 1965, 400 American and Australian soldiers defended themselves from over 1200 VC troops, losing 48 soldiers, and killing over 400 of the enemy. The American/Australian forces killed almost 10 of the enemy for every 1 that was killed by the enemy, illistrating that our forces are more effective than theirs.
What the hell man... Vietnam does not equal North Korea.

Also, the Vietcong was largely made up of peasants.

The US had M16s, M14s, anti-tank weapons, Noob Tubes and M-20 rocket launchers...

The VC had crusty old second hand Ak-47s and some RPGs and Mortars.

Not surprising the US had the upper hand there...

Fuck scaring them.

The US and South Korea need to bomb the living shit out of the North. Send a storm of fire and radiation across the capital city.

Made Japan shut the hell up in WW2, it'll work today.

Wouldn't that be like sucker punching a Bear?. Your going to hurt it, then really piss it off... Then it's going to have you for dinner.

I mean, yeah if one of those nukes hit America, millions may die and the fallout would create a major catastrophe. But the retaliation from the U.S could quite easily wipe N.K off of the map. I doubt they'd even need to nuke the place... Just bomb the sin out of it. Though I don't even think the nuke would even reach America and I also doubt they'll make good on their threats. N.K's leader is like an attention seeking brat, making idle threats so people will focus attention on him... Heck how many other times as he threaten to nuke the U.S?.

Also, if he does nuke the U.S or at least attempt to nuke the U.S... I honestly doubt they'll be many people siding with him after that... He'll be on his own fighting just about the rest of the planet. I doubt they'd even be many people protesting the war back home.

So all I'm saying N.K is... Sure, give it a shot. Just hope you hit some where vital or somewhere good, because that's the last hit you'll make.

Not really... The fallout would hit the other allies of the U.S mainly S.K. The U.S can't risk some thing like that. So nukes are out of the question. That doesn't mean the U.S can't bomb the shit out of them.

I'm glad that we're taking initiative to counteract North Korea, but I doubt anything good will come out of it. Color me worried.

Honestly if North Korea directly attacks the United States, there's going to be an enormous international backlash, and I mean absolutely brutal. With the combined forces of USA, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, possibly China and Russia, North Korea will cease to exist.

There'll be no arresting KJI, they're just kill everyone and everything in the country.

Which is what they should be doing now. Just locate KJI and carpet-bomb everything within 100 miles, collateral damage and civilian deaths be damned.

North Korea's attitude is what could very easily ignite a nuclear holocaust, causing the deaths of possibly billions of people. It needs to end, right now.

Well, if North Korea starts a fight, there's a good chance they're going to be the only ones in the fight on their side. China will most likely leave them high any dry in the even of aggression towards their trading partners, and the country will run out of supplies within a week.

It's really a lose-lose situation for the North Koreans, they launch first, the rest of the world fucks them over, they get attacked first well, they might get China's help. That's basically how I see it. Nuclear war has been threatened on many occasions in the last 60 years, but I can't see the Kim Jong-Il being stupid enough to let fly.
