Homestar, Strongbad and the rest of Free Country USA never got a proper send off. They've been standing in the snow in off season costumes for a year or so now with no updates, even just to say the site is on hiatus.

Still, I like visiting it on occasion for the pure nostalgia.
Why would you ninja me on the very first post?! =(

.....remember Albinoblacksheep...? Neither do I.

And Runescape.com. I used to love that game....sure, it had it's flaws, but I still have very fond memories....the soundtrack is amazing.

Ooh, almost forgot Vagabond's Quest [http://netdragons.com/games/vq1] a Java-based MUD/battle arena type RPG thingy. To be honest, by the end of its life it was more like a glorified chatbox, as barely anyone really played the game other than kinda messing around.

I just out grew the target audience, as did everyone else I knew there.
Oh man, that place turned to such shit after '06...

Yet I still stuck around for almost 5 more years. -_-
I left in '05 just after we formed the anti-fundamentalism guild that never did anything...

I also read NuklearPower everyday until a hurricane forced the creator to stop doing comics. I went back a few months ago and saw that he finished the story but I just haven't had the time to read the rest. newgrounds and STFD (stick figure death theater) were really popular in high school I kinda just forgot about them in college.

Wow, guys, nearly a whole page, and not a single mention of the Really Big Button that Doesn't Do Anything [http://www.pixelscapes.com/spatulacity/button.htm]?

This bad boy predates the original Quake, and is still one of the better places to visit when you need a chuckle on the internet.

Maybe I'm just dating myself. D:

Gametalk.com was the first real web community I was ever a part of and ever since then I have never felt as welcome or 'at home' as I did on the Golden Sun forum. Then it died, and before it died the forum died as members left and forgot about it. Sad times indeed. There's a 'remake' up called GametalkX.0, but it has none of the old regulars that made it something more than a cheap collective of half-dead forums continuously fading into obscurity.

Newgrounds - I was there since 2003. I was never a member; I just liked all the funny shit - especially the old 'assassin' page. Good time. I don't really pay attention to it much any more.

Maybe it's messed up, but 5chan & 4chan's /b/ boards. I was initially introduced to the *chans back in 2004 with 5chans's /b/, and being that I had not seen the /b/ it was based off of (4chan's) I was at first horribly shocked, but also greatly amused. When 5chan crashed and burned due to it's two co-owners having a shitfit with the other and closing permanently, I naturally migrated to the original /b/ of 4chan. I loved it solely for its horribleness - I have never been to any place as degenerate and vile as the hive of scum and villainy that was 4chan in it's prime. Stayed there until 2007 when I figured the place became too tame and watered down a year after /b/day. Still waiting for another place to arise and take its former title.

A little sad it never became more popular or well known - the webcomic "The Avatar" [http://www.the-avatar.com/index.php] It used to be one of my favorite webcomics later on. No point in seeing the early beginning stuff, because it's shit, but it is cool to see how it evolved from random childhood scribbly gibberish to very well-drawn weird gibberish. Trippy as hell with the last arc.

Sadly, it has been on hiatus since July 2007 and I suspect Ransom will never come back. Very sad that it ended right when it was getting very interesting.

Back in my high school years which was long before Youtube came to be, I used to go to these quiz site called Quizilla. It had tons of funny and great quizes to take in that is until people started to use the site to post their fanfic and poems on a quiz site.
I left when the site give into them so they got their own section within the site.

Gamespot. After the whole Gerstmann issue, I couldn't get to enjoy that site anymore. Also, the community there is pretty bad.

Thinkin' Lincoln. Those comics were the bomb. Too bad it was put into hiatus in 2009. I doubt it will ever come back.

Gamespot. Nothing wrong with it, I just lost interest.

this begs the question... what is the oldest website on the net that hasn't been updated for sometime?

I'd love to see some of the websites from the mid-90s... remember how they all looked like shit?
I believe this might give you the nostalgic flashback you are looking for.

I came across that site ages ago, either browsing wikipedia or doing a really deep search on Google for cool stuff on lower ranked sites. Anyway, that's actually one of the cooler remnants of web 1.0. It reminds me of just how much stuff died with geocities; I know there's an archive torrent floating around, but it's not the same; there was so much good information buried under the crap that it was a real disservice to history for Yahoo to get rid of it.

Bit of a change in subject, but here's an example of what web 1.0 looked like when the designer wasn't going for flashy; it puts into perspective some of the complaints you'll find in old usenet posts about websites that focused so much on flash intros and the like that the text -- which at the time was regarded as the main attraction -- was harder to find.
I think the Space Jam site had a thing on Reddit 'recently' (where recently means anytime in the past year, so not really all that recent). I remember growing up people were complaining about the 'flash' (sometimes defined as Macromedia Flash before it was owned by Adobe) and how it effected the substance. Thing is though, to this day I only really remember the flashy sites, even if only for how website should never ever look. I do mourn the loss of Geocities though. So many early websites lost.

Hmm, let's see:
Miniclip.com -had awesome flash games to and loved to play it at school (especially the game with the penguin, catapult, and balloons if you remember that)
Neopets.com -my first game site that I had to make an email account for and I loved neopets.
Gaiaonline -used it from about 2005-2008-9. Was fun while it lasted, but I lost interest.
Cartonnetwork.com -Used to love playing games there, especially the weird ddr-esque billy and mandy game
Ugoplayer.com -(now called flashplayer.com if I am correct). I enjoyed watching animations there like Kingdom Hearts Chronicles, Hyperboy, and Decline of the Video Gaming (both of which likely originated on newgrounds)
Hyperboystudios.com -I still go there now. I loved and still love Hyperboy, I just recently read through the entire comic, and I eagerly await the 6th, and final episode. The epic conclusion to the 6 part series that I have waited almost a decade for! It's great to see that the creator has gone on to work in the field of animation and has worked on many animations that I am familiar with on channels like AdultSwim.

TOTSE. Read everything from comedy, bomb manuals, and moar with a chaotic forum to boot! Unfortunately though, Jeff Hunter decided he was going to be the biggest f***** one day and shut it down with hardly any warning at all.
