1) Japanese women often don't feel appriciated by the men. High risk of rape (despite death penalty for rape) plus descrimination etc.
2) Japanese women often feel that that men are inadequate in the wong department.
3) Japanese are usually not too fond of the Chinese, so importing Chinese babies will pose certain issues.

Solving their people shortage problem won't be easy.

Give me some tiiiiiiime. I want to land on my feet first (and as a University flunkie, I don't need a dating life to make that even harder). And I don't want to even bother early on, as I notice that girls tend to gravitate to guys that I try my hardest to NOT be like while in their late teens/early twenties.

So yeah. Let me finish my two-year tech diploma, get a job, start a pension, get a house, maybe get a dog, and generally settle into my everyday career life and turn twenty five before I go searching for a girl to share it with.

"If you don't want a girlfriend, you're ill." (slightly paraphrased)

I am a 23 year old college student living at his parents house until graduation. I'm not in good shape, I barely make enough to pay off my bills, and I have enough friends to spend time with. I have no time for a relationship nor do I seriously think there is a girl out there who would want to be with me right now.

And I'm ill with that train of logic?

Color me ill. What pills can I take to relieve this illness, doctor?

Oh, there are no pills? You can't take medicine or antibiotics to help alleviate the illness?

THEN IT ISN'T AN ILLNESS.

Uhm, no.

Blame a culture generated by failed previous attempts to raise the birth rate, namely insane condom taxes, long-standing illegality of the pill and other contraception. Now throw in the porn industry's STD campaign to promote and normalise the single otaku lifestyle. Yes, you're reading that correctly: The first anti-ATD campaign in Japan's history was produced by Soft on Demand, latching on to an insane STD infection rate caused by the aforementioned government-induced problems. And the solution they proposed was porn over women.

Finally blame Koizumi's government reforms which essentially privatised the public sector in a time of national economic crisis, essentially locking youth and women out of proper employment. Whilst infidelity is practically the national sport, relationships themselves are still rather conservative and there's pressure for them to lead directly to marriage in Japan. Furthermore, families put pressure on newlyweds to have kids as soon as possible. The sad reality is that the majority of the youth cannot afford this end result.

How anyone can claim the nation's present predicament is "strange" or "unexpected" is beyond me. Blame the post-war baby boomer generation basically for their greed in the mid-90s.

Society is ill, the youth are just symptoms.

I laughed way harder at this than I should have, especially considering I'm part Chinese.

Given that the population of the planet just hit 7 billion, and we can't sustain that many people, I can't help but wonder why this isn't considered a good thing. Maybe we should distribute games, anime, and manga to everyone and perhaps we could drop the entire planet population by 20% by 2050.
Fairly logical, but no comfort to Japan. While Japan's diminishing population might have a (tiny) positive effect on global overpopulation, it's far more likely to damage Japan's own economy. The problem isn't really that of a reduced population, but an ageing one. An ageing population has serious consequences for a country's balance book due to the higher number of dependants and the reduced workforce.

Well... I don't want a girlfriend. I wouldn't mind having sex of course but the whole girlfriend thing seems to end up badly 90% of the time. I don't really think its worth it.

Everyone who's saying that the low birthrate is a good thing because Japan is overpopulated doesn't understand what the exact problem is.

As was mentioned in the article, Japan may have a lot of people but the low birthrate means that the population is getting older. This is a problem for them because when they become so old that they can't work anymore and need to retire, essentially becoming unproductive resource hogs, there won't be enough young people around to support all of them. (And, naturally, professors like the one in the article tend to be getting up there in age themselves, so this would probably be something that concerns them.)
Quoted for truth. My country is in a similar problem, just on a smaller scale. Looking forward to rising taxes in the next 10 years.

I'm not surprised. Seeing as it's a [social disability] caused by [addictive effect], it could even be termed as a 'disease'.

Perhaps they had ought to create more open parties, events etc. for anyone to join, and to make it so public and friendly, there's no excuse to bail out. Improve the social life for everyone, so they won't refer to become shut-ins and actually find someone irl.

...Or perhaps revert to the old good ways of Yamato-Damashii.

If all this stuff was keeping people from pursuing a relationship, why wouldn't it affect everyone on the planet, instead of just Japan?

All these things suposedly turning people into shut-ins are everywhere.

Does this also include women?

1. Yes, for the mere fact the rapes aren't reported because of shame and sending someone to their death isn't on everyones mind. Evilthecat wrote a rather long post on this a fair bit back.

2. You mean besides my Japanese friend? http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=366192 if you look at the statistics lower down.

So what this piece is saying is... every single man should book a flight to Japan to bag some fine young thing (considering none of them apparently have boyfriends).
Alright, you talked me into it =P

Damn, I have a serious illness it turns out...SO what if "I dont want a girlfriend" mentality came from previous relationship that caused one a really bad heartbreak? Is that still a serious illness?
