If I can sell out and/to get away from the toxic that is games industry and the general community that surrounds it, I would do so in heartbeat.

2.5 billion dollars? Yes please!

You should have made this a poll, I mean really, if you were going to make 2.5 billion, how many people here would not do far more evil things than selling Minecraft to Microsoft?

I don't begrudge Notch and Mojang as a collective being sold to Microsoft. It'll only be a problem if Microsoft does things like not allowing mods on the PC version or trying to take all revenue generated from Minecraft LPs or something. No, in all honesty Notch has shown the general thing about Capitalism: make a product, and then sell it.

The only thing I find "wrong" about any of this is that Micrsoft made a terrible investment. 2.5 billion is way too much to spend on a company that has made 1 successful game. Sure the merchandise is there, but it'll eventually dry up. Look at Rovio and Angry Birds. Not to mention this purchase was apparently to be to try and increase sales of Windows Phones, which is even dumber if you as me. Then again, over the past few years I've seen ludicrous amounts of money being spent on things they could have gotten for less. Then again, nothing beats the Facebook and their 19 billion acquisition of a damned app...

Man, just get over it. Seriously. Who fucking cares? A guy made an interesting and unique hit game and made his fortune from it, and you want to get pissy at him for it? And who the fuck still rails on minecraft for its graphics? YOU are being the degenerate here.

He got stressed out by the pressure of having the entire internet breathing down his neck, so he got an obscene amount of money to get out of it and made his employees millionaires. He had no obligation to give his employees anything but their wages, but he gave them MILLIONS. EACH. Sure, it's not much compared to what he's got, but they're all set for life in luxury with money left over for their kids.

The only difference between myself and Notch is that I would have immediately spent that two and a half billion bucks hiring people to punch all my Internet critics in the testicles/ovaries (whichever applied).

And to the people who say "he should've expanded the company and made more games", I remember a couple of projects called Scrolls and 0x10c, and a whole lot of people screaming "ohmigawd, stop wasting time with other games and wurk moar on Minecraft".

I totally don't blame Notch for selling Minecraft. He's got other projects he wants to do, and 2.5 billion dollars is a hell of a lot of money to get them moving.

The only thing I worry about is what Microsoft will do with it. I can definitely see them adding microtransactions to the pocket edition and calling updates "expansion packs" from now on and charging for them. Hopefully they have the foresight to see that doing such things would utterly break the community and make the game worthless, but seeing as how this is Microsoft that's probably not going to be the case.

But again, I don't blame Notch for this. If a company is willing to pay $2.5 billion for ANYTHING of mine, I would operate under the assumption that they feel they've got a good handle on how it works and how best to make money from it without misusing it. If Microsoft paid Notch all that money without even comprehending what makes Minecraft work and why the community is so loyal, that's all on them. Notch sold them a highly successful game that has a pretty clear formula and pattern of success. If they break it with a bunch of corporate bullshit, that is not Notch's fault.

You can't judge all of a video game as art to evade criticism.
As near as I can tell, the only criticism you've offered is that Minecraft has less graphical fidelity than Natural Selection. Given that the low graphical fidelity is intentional, and it functions for its intended purpose, I fail to see how that's a negative.

I read an article on notch recently

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2014-09-17-rust-creator-id-have-done-the-same-thing-on-mojang-deal

In this the creator of gmod goes on to praise notch for selling out to microsoft without any hesitation. The thing is, all he does is praise the bussiness mindset. Notch doesn't really take up noteworthy professional ethics.
Uh, what ethics? The guy made a successful product, got tired of the notoriety associated with it, and sold it to a company that gave him an incredibly generous offer so he could drop off the radar again. What's wrong with that?

Now that THAT's considered, let's look at the product

developed by a small indie developer

Now let's look at another indie title developed from scratch with not nearly a fraction of the profits.

I see two very different games with two very different aesthetic styles and design choices. What's your point?

Now that THAT's considered, let's look at a bunch of manchildren act passive aggressive and like mongoloids in response to young children that they are offended by, to the point where they can't even answer basic questions about the game they are developing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRdcptG365I
Okay first off, what do you have against Mongolians?

Secondly, I couldn't even get through half of that video. It was just too awkward. There's a difference between legit questions about the game and begging the devs to join your server.

So no, I'm afraid you did not convince me. Do not pass "GO." Do not collect $200.

Notch just wants to go back to making games without the expectation of completely changing the face of the industry with each title.

Notch is a different person to most people. He was never a guy that wanted to be a celebrity, he just wanted to be a guy that made games that people enjoyed. Before minecraft took off he was an active member in the community listening to feedback and making adjustments to the game when possible. After it took off and he became a celebrity he began to distance himself from minecraft and he even went so far as to hire a team to run the game while he worked on other projects. He hasnt done anything with the game in years but he was still this celebrity figure head of the company.

The media has been especially crazy about him. I remember a case on...I think it was Kotaku where Notch was just screwing around with some code and he was like "Hey I did this" and the media went crazy with talk of Notch making a new game and that it was going to rival minecraft. The guy hadnt even decided what he was making yet but the media blew everything out of proportion.

I said before that he had been trying to distance himself from minecraft for awhile. He gave all development to his team and hadnt worked on the game in years. However when the EULA thing happened he still got hate for it. Now hes made probably the most public burnt bridge statement he can and sold the game for a ton of money before quiting the company.

Since hes a celebrity its easy to target him with unfair attacks and hate even when you dont know whats really going on with him. Thats just not fair. Notch had already abandoned the game years before he sold the rights and yet because hes a celebrity people are still going crazy about anything he does. The guy doesnt want to be a celebrity, he just wants to be a guy that makes games. Why cant we just let him do that instead of going on this witch hunt?
