Well, I hope they aren't numerous, that would just detract from the game on the main continent if your where constantly living in the shadow of a massive island that never moved (idea: would be cool if the islands moved allong with the clouds, then again, that means he would have to make the "world" round... scratch that idea) ... would be running constantly from the undead and creepers.

Notch is just stealing this idea from a mod.
Actually, Notch beat the modders this time around in the idea-race. InDev had map types, which changed the way the generator worked, and one of those types was floating. He removed it ages ago because it was buggy, occasionally spawned you on a floating island of sand or gravel (which made it impossible to get off, since putting anything by it or digging from it would cause the island to fall) and there wasn't any good way to make the generator work in InfDev (plus the obvious fact that map types are no longer in use). Most mods are attempts at recreating this (though personally, I prefer the skylands downloadable map, because it's much more awesome) so he's probably building this off of his old work rather than someone's mod.

OT: Sounds sweet. It'll even share the Nether's crazy-punishing deaths, since falling will lose you all of your items. He might have to do something with the water, though, since otherwise the waterfalls will end abruptly at the death-zone. Hopefully we'll find some sweet unique blocks in this area.

This. You people are just arguing against Notch because it's the "hip" thing to do. Seriously guy, do some damn research.

I've had Minecraft for almost two years now and I remember the map types.

He even had a "Hell" map type. That's right, you could spawn in hell, much like his Other World. Although the creatures didn't change.

Ah, I was ninja'd.

Yeah, I have a feeling that mod is the reason he's announced it. I'm actually a bit surprised he doesn't mention it. There's no way he doesn't know about it...
Skylands is awesome. I actually have a feeling that the official version won't be as good. It feels like a tag on. Skylands was based around a preset adventure in a different setting. Finding the secret huts, bridges and gravel fields.
The mod we're talking about isn't Skylands, it's Aether, but I just looked up Skylands and... damn.

Floating islands?!

Okay, that settles it, I am so getting this game and making a replica of Neo Verona from Romeo x Juliet!

Doesn't use the mod, and instead makes his own version?
WHY ARE YOU NOT USING THE MOD THE MOD IS BETTER STOP RIPPING OFF THEIR IDEAS NOTCH!

Decides to just not incorporate sky worlds?
WHY ARE YOU NOT PUTTING THESE IN NOTCH WHY ARE YOU SUCH A LAZY GIT THESE WOULD BE GREAT

The man could walk across water, and people would complain about how he's taking money away from ferrymen.
walk across water, christ already did that, way to steal someone else's ideas.

but yeah, btw, i was sort of hoping he would add that underwater stuff he talked about.

I hope he makes it more different; I'd like to see it as different as the Nether, that'd be crazy awesome. :D

Looks like someone's taken a look at Terraria's floating islands, and thought "I like the look of those..."

To be fair, Terraria ripped off Minecraft. Consider them even.

I love everyone complaining about Notch ripping off X Y and Z when the game used to have floating island maps back in Indev, which people have been clamoring to have back. First as a seed option and then as a Heaven-ish contrast to the Nether. Which was the inspiration for some of the mods. If that's ripping off something, then Notch is ripping off the people who ripped him off.

Yeah, I thought I was going crazy at first. I knew sky maps had already been in the game and actually didn't even realize it wasn't an option anymore until I just went to confirm it.

My brother's dream of a castle in the sky may yet be realized...
I wonder if skyrealm will be visible from "earth," or will it essentially just raise the sky limit a bunch?

Doesn't this already happen? I see this plenty of times when I create a new world, tons of floating islands.

Whoa, at least watch the trailer, Terraria is it's own game.

Infact the only elements similar are digging and building, and I think there's a game called "Real Life" that invented them.

Terraria is better, IMHO. Minecraft doesn't have:

Magic
Bosses
2D sprites
Goblins
Hookshot
Health that can be increased by finding crystal hearts underground
NPCs
Vines that can obstruct light in caves
Underground jungle biome
Proper dungeons
Corrupted parts of the world

I'm not going to go on because I'm taking up too much space here. Just research the damn game next time.

All I can say is.

Great way to directly copy Terraria.

Edit: I love how the only post mentioning Terraria is the one above mine, and everyone else didn't even think of the game Terraria.

How about "Doesn't use the mod and instead makes his own version better than the mod?

I think that'd go over pretty well.

I love how you didn't notice the post above yours is quoting two posts before it - one from the front page - that also mentioned Terraria.

Besides, Minecraft's always had the potential for floating islands. There's one right near the origin point in the Glacier seed, for instance. They're just random rather than planned.

Terraria and Minecraft are really pretty different. Minecraft is a pure sandbox building playset. Terraria is more Zelda 2/Metroidvania with some building options tacked on as a perk. If you just started with a town of NPCs in Terraria and removed the building tools it wouldn't change the game all that much; the building tools ARE Minecraft, by comparison.

The easy way to make this look good is to create a new block type, i.e. a cloud block, then simply have all the "floating islands" sitting on/in clouds.
