One of my favorites is Jeffrey Dahmer.

Here's a short description.

Jeffrey Dahmer
Young man from a normal family, as far as any family under a microscope can be designated "normal," reaches puberty and starts to fantasize about sex with dead men. As these fantasies begin to take over his conscious mind, his link with the real word begin to disintegrate. He becomes more and more alienated with his family, who cannot fathom what is going on and are powerless to help him.

He moves away, takes a low-level job far beneath his abilities, and starts to lure young minority men to his apartment where he conducts bizarre experiments on them, brutalizes and finally kills them. As if this were not enough, he then mutilates and decapitates them, has sex with their corpses and cannibalizes them.

Inevitably, he is brought to justice, and like many men who go to prison for life, he professes to find God and embrace religion before he was killed by a fellow prisoner. But does he really or is this just one more prisoner sham?

I remember when some of these murders took place (The ones in '91, the final year of his murders). What a fucked up guy. Having fantasies about having sex with dead boys/men? WTF. Sure it's probably thought about by men a lot these days... unfortunately, but Dahmer was so ridiculously normal. He's pretty interesting to read about if you have the time.

Anyone else remember these murders?
And anyone else have any "favorite" notorious serial killers?

There are a few books out about Dahmer which are very interesting but I think he is pretty well known.

Dahmer's world famous (or world infamous) - lots of folks (especially if they're Gen-Xers old enough to remember when he was in the news every damn day during his trial) know who he is.

As far as obscure serial killers go, Herman Mudgett (aka H.H. Holmes) is a favorite of mine for the diabolical way he terrorized turn-of-the-century (20th century, that is) Chicago.

Nevermind about the not-so-well-known part then <_< I apologize. I just never hear people discuss him when the serial killer topic arises. Plus, I was only 9 when the final murders happened.

This really is not a safe topic. I read a list of the worst serial killers and repeating it would be an instant perma-ban.

Um, no?

Anyway, have you seen The Necroswanson's rant, telling people not to do what you just did?

Anyway, I quite like Dexter. A serial killer of serial killers; what's not to like?

...Or is this supposed to non-fictional serial killers?

I don't really have any favourite serial killers. Ed Gein was rather interesting, though.

I already knew of Dahmer and the jist of what horrible crimes he committed. But I didn't know to what extent. I read it all & found it to be quite disturbing.

Theres also Serial Killer X from Condemned. He hunts serial killers also, but he kills them in the same manner that they use, so they look like another victim.

Also Sylar from heroes:

Sylar: STOP! I can tell people who are lying because i saw up in their skulls and ripped their abilities up from their brain.
Luke: WOW.. so you're like a serial killer..
Sylar: I'm not a serial killer..
Luke: Well you've got a pattern.. you go after specific victims.. you collect mementos..
Sylar: Ok.. Technically I'm a serial killer..

I don't understand the general fascination with serial killers to be quite honest. Most of the stories are sensationalized anyway.

Jeffrey Dahmer is one of the worlds MOST famous serial killers, and thats quite a trite depiction of his 'normal' childhood, this actually isn't the case but I don't have the energy for this right now.

one of the most fascinating serial killer I have ever studied is Peter Kurten.

Didn't Dahmer kill animals as a child? I don't think he was ever obscure OR normal...

How about Albert Fish? Pretty much the Boogeyman. He'd torture, kill and cannibalize children. Once even wrote a letter to the father of one of his victims to make clear he didn't molest his daughter...only tortured and killed her.

john Wayne gacy would have to be my favorite not for the way he molested children but for the way he dressed up as a happy clown to get his victims he though outside the box.
