So where I was downloading away when I decide to download something there was stored in the Filesonic when I got this message:

All sharing functionality on FileSonic is now disabled. Our service can only be used to upload and retrieve files that you have uploaded personally.

If this file belongs to you, please login to download it directly from your file manager.

Now, Now. I don't actually think that the FBI is behind this, but everyone seems to be a little afraid after Megaupload. So that's the situation so far:

Fileserve, Filejungle, Uploadstation and Filesonic - They are deleting several files and closing their membership.

Uploaded - Banned USA Ip.

Filepost and Hotfile - Is suspending all accounts that inflicts their rules

4shared - Deleting several files

Mediafire - Will have to open up to the FBI and depose to them.

Fuck... Shit just got real.

EDIT: So Anonymous decided to create a new upload service, the www.anonyupload.com . Is pretty small and they are asking to donations. If you want to donate just go in the site and follow the instructions, as for me I just gonna wait and see were this is going.

M'yes, sites that have for years been making money off distributing copyrighted material are being taken down, clearly we are living in a totalitarian communist state now. Now if you'll excuse me I need to purchase some lubricant before the stormtroopers come knockin' at my door. Oh my ;D

Godsdamn it, so that's why I couldn't download that porn tasteful art film.

DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN YOU FBI!

Why, though, is the Pirate Bay still legal? Why is that a thing?
They're just linking to content that links to illegal content, not actually hosting it.

If I remember correctly, they sent a CnD to The Pirate Bay, but they just moved their servers and brought the site back online.

I gotta wonder about the entire one-click filehosting industry, really. This is just pure speculation but I think it's likely that a sizable chunk of the userbase that's actually paying for the service are pirates. They benefit the most from uncapped speeds, multiple downloads, zero wait, and other perks only available to paying users, and they're more likely to return to the same service. Meanwhile, other users probably grab something from any particular service once or twice a month, so it's not worth it to them to purchase a subscription.

I gotta wonder if the business model can survive without piracy. They'd need a critical mass of users to survive off ads alone.

Actually, that might be a good topic for discussion... how often do people grab legal files off a filehost? Unfortunately, you can't ask (here, anyway) how often people grab illegal files...since anyone who admitted to it would at the very least get warned. >.>

There is hope though. A related, but significantly different business model is used by Dropbox and SpiderOak. Both can be used for sharing in a similar way to Rapidshare, MU, FileSonic and such. Dropbox seems somewhat easier to use but SpiderOak is vastly more secure. I wonder if they'll see a bump in business as the filehosts get scared. ;)

Wow, I didn't see this thread, if I had I wouldn't have created my own thread about videos on videobb being taken down.

That pisses me off, first Megavideo which I was paying for goes down before my sub was up, then videobb which I had a half a month subscription left also folds up and all good things disappear.

This is getting really serious. The internet going to be come useless for most video watching other than the awesome stuff the Escapist does, and the random mediocre to crap on youtube.

I might actually have to hook my television back up to my cable and flip through channels and end up seeing that nothing worthwhile is on.

Life just got a whole lot duller.

I doubt its the FBI doing it. I think Filesonic and the others are just scared like shit now that megaupload was taking down and so they're taking down anything that could criminalize them.

This should be interesting. I'll be waiting for the news in my local papers. I don't think most of the sites will shutdown completely. Current laws will probably be rewritten and terms relooked at. Most likely new methods drawn up to catch illegal uploads and reporting made available like with Youtube.

Videobb and VideoZer are removing all copyrighted content, I guess in fear for what happened to Megavideo. They haven't shut down to my knowledge though, they still have all non-copyrighted content.

I was happy to witness how the Internet was born.
It seems that i'll witness its downfall as well...

Sad day indeed.

Because they don't actually store any copyrighted material on their servers.
All they provide is a link file that lets you download from other peers who already have the material (or parts thereof).

It's because of this technicality, TPB keeps getting away with it.
Its not a technicality, its the fundamental way that Bittorrent works...
And they are not getting away with it, they are doing nothing wrong, not to mention the fact that they are based in Sweden, where it is completely legal.
