In the age of globalized multinational capital everyone lives in America - Iraqis and Afghanis are hardly safe despite being half a world away. Our goverment may be shady but it doesn't go the full mile to spy on people. Even if they did, it might be hard for them to do that because I don't got a router. So there's that.
The early dream of hackers was to create a virtual space free of the state, to outsmart the dumb state by being super-abstract and technical. But their arrogance has been exposed - they underestimated just how far the state will go to maintain power at any cost.
Some choose the lesser evil, moving to a less damaging imperial power like Japan or China or more recently, South Korea. But that's just delaying the inevitable, a kind of "escape the hood" mentality that doesn't solve any problems. It just makes it more difficult for the rest of us.
