I would change The Warrior for The Thief. Those 10 points in Luck are a godsend.

Mmm... not the ones from diablo.
... That's why they throw fireballs instead of wielding ridiculously huge weapons, huh?

Oh, wait...

I've completely screwed myself over with my choices in Oblivion, though obviously I didn't realise it at the time. All I've got left to do is about 2/3 of the Mages' Guild questline, but my problem is that I'm 200+ hours in as a Redguard tank under the sign of The Warrior, having thrown all points into Strength and Endurance on levelling up, and have used no magic apart from Restoration outside of quests where it's necessary to do so. My major skills look something like this:

Blade (I really can't think of a good reason not to)
Blunt (fucking stupid idea when Blade was my first choice)
Heavy Armour (well, duh, it was meant to be a tank character)
Acrobatics (whyyyy?)
Speechcraft (again, why?)
Marksman (I never bloody use bows)
Security (utterly pointless when you can pick locks by sound, I guess it's easy enough to grind though)

I think I called the custom class 'All-Rounder', which is slightly inaccurate to say the least. I'm gonna have to start a new game focused as a mage if I want to finish the Mages' Guild, no way I can do it with this character unless I grind the skills I haven't maxed (annoyingly, the most tedious to grind) and throw all my points into magic-related stuff when I level up. That'll obviously take bloody years so it's probably more practical to start over and abandon the few hours I put into getting all the recommendations and doing the first couple of MG quests.

My custom class was Blood Letter. Later I found out that was also a rank in the arena.

He was supposed to be the ultimate assassin. (And he is!)

Major Skills:
Blade
Marksman
Light Armour
Sneak
Security
Restoration
Athletics

Where did you get that sword and armor from?

Mine is

Class Name: Bum
Character Name: Oi the Fab Bum
major skills: lockpicking
stealth
hand to hand(or was it blade?)
mercantile
athletics

Thats all i can remember.
the sword you get from this chick ... i forgot her name she's a deadric lord and she's apparently the hardest fight in the game

and as for the armour .. i've been playing at high levels recently and have come across some badass gear ... maybe it's high level gear (higher than 13 haha)

I just made one called Gladiator and boosted the Long Blade and heavy armour up to as much as I could. Then I could get to the killing-things-bit.

Nord or Orc.
The Lady or The Warrior.
Heavy armour and Blade or Light armour and Blunt
Alchemy
Merchantile
Speachcraft
Destruction (or sometimes Marksman)
Alteration (or sometimes Security)

Covers all the bases, but I tend to level up too quickly, and need lots of those potions and poisons to get through.

Speechcraft is a horrible pick. The mini-game is easy enough without a high speechcraft skill. Also, with Illusion, you don't need to play it. Just craft your own Charm spell and everyone will like you well enough.

Restoration is also a bad choice unless you are playing on the PC with some magic mods. In the stock game, the value of health restored is overvalued by the game. They restore so little health, that in the time it takes to cast the spell, whatever is attacking you will have dealt almost that same level of damage. Only at super high levels is it worth it. Its also REALLY hard to get to super high levels because it takes a LOOOOOOOOONG time for Restoration skill to improve. Seriously, just use alchemy which restores MORE health than Restoration. Alchemy skill ALSO increases so fast that it doesn't even need to be a major skill anyway.

Athletics isn't too great of a choice either. They only thing it does for you is regen fatigue a little more quickly. Alchemy pots work better and don't require Alchemy as a major skill.

Illusion and Conjuration are solid choices. But to get much use out of them, you will need a bigger magicka pool. Go with The Mage as a birthsign. The Warrior doesn't really help you much.

Go ahead and keep Restoration if you want because it is useful for healing NPCs that follow you. In place of Speechcraft and Althetics, I STRONGLY recommend Archery and Armorer. Archery because EVERYONE needs a second way to deal damage AND a way to deal damage from a distance. Destruction can't work because you don't have the magicka pool to do it right. Armorer because equipment in Oblivion degrades at an INCREDIBLY fast rate. Without Armorer skill, you will have to leave many dungeons 2 maybe even 3 times to repair your equipment at the nearest town. (That's not a joke.)

Personally, I think that unless you are going for a specific theme with your character, it doesn't matter what you choose for your major skills. It's prudent to choose one from each parent attribute though, so you can be sure that you can get that +5 modifier without overleveling your major skills prematurely.

Back in Morrowind where overleveling didn't matter, going for the Major and Minor skills that offered the lowest bonuses was key. That way, you could hit the highest level possible. I did do a theme character in Morrowind once. It was a Brawler monk (like Yang in FF4). I could kill Hlaluu guards at level 8. They really nerfed the effects of Hand-to-Hand in Oblivion.

Oh, and a nod to whoever said to go for endurance first. It's the only way you can fuck up your character. Everything else can be learned and adjusted later.

I'd have swapped out Speechcraft and Athletics for Block and Armorer. Seriously, you have NO idea how useful Armorer is.

Oh yeah I forgot about that. Endurance MUST ALWAYS be one of your two favorite attributes. The other should be Luck because every other attribute can be increased with multipliers. Luck is the only one that doesn't get any ever.

Yeah, having luck as a favorite isn't a must, but it will take 10 levels just to make up for the boost in points. 2 for any other attribute.

No, I meant the "suspicious of anything involving hocus-pocus" part, I mean in diablo they were the protectors of the most important "hocus-pocus" item of them all, the worldstone. And I don't really know if you've watched diablo 3 screens but they also use magical hammers (not enchanted hammer or nothing, I mean a magic power that takes form of a huge hammer) that they seem to invoke out of thin air to beat adversaries to pulp.
FU and your sarcasm btw ^^

Race: Nord (since they're good with swords)
Class: SOLDIER (that's right. SOLDIER)
Sign: Warrior or Steed. You want your character to be classed between BAD ASS FIGHTING! And High Speed. Meaning, focus on speed if you want, or focus on strength if you want, but for best results? Mix it up.

Favored Attributes: Speed, and Strength. Duh.
Major Skills: ACrobatics, Blade, Athletics, Block, Destruction, Light Armor, Security is good. Or Mercentile.
