My favorite build was an Argonian battlemage. It worked out better than I expected.

You can drop Speechcraft definitely, and probably Athletics too. Illusion is not a bad skill, but I don't see how it could really be very useful with this class. My advice is to drop those, and replace them with Armourer, possibly Alteration or Mysticism if you want, and maybe Acrobatics. You could keep Athletics, but it's not great.
