Oh if only I had a Tattoo..

I'm too young to get a tattoo, and my pain thresehold probably isn't high enough, but I sometimes wonder what I would get, and where. I don't just want a tattoo for the sake of having a tattoo, I want it to mean something. I really want the arm dragon tattoos that Rand has from the Wheel of Time series, but those are kinda big and flashy.

Have you ever thought of getting a tattoo, and if so, of what?

If you get one make sure it's something that you aren't going to change your mind about. Don't get Olive Oyl blowing Daffy Duck (I'm not saying you would) because it seems funny at the time. For that matter don't get your wife's name or whatever. You want something permanent that actually has meaning to you. And don't get Chinese characters or a tribal armband for the obvious reasons.

I drew my own design, a peacock. Bit of personal significance and its going on my back so as not to be overly obvious. Still too young but I guess that just gives me thinking time, so I can at least prove to my family it isn't a daft fad.

I would love to get inked but my healing process is wretched, I scar from everything and don't really trust myself not to just end up with a nasty mess.

My pain threshold is high.

Had to chaperone an ex once, she wanted black fire (sort of tribal style) along the bottom of her stomach and down her leg. I was impressed, the tattoo artist insisted on showing the safety gear and the assembly of the tools and insisted that I be there as she would have to take her jeans off her push down her undies - he refused point blank to do it without a witness. I was most pleased by the thoroughness and made me sure that this is the quality you want if you trust someone with your skin.

And yes, that much filled in black ink took several visits and was a squishy mess for a while. She was the one who taught me that if your skin itches and you can't scratch because you will mess up the ink, just slap the area instead and the nerves will shut up, As a eczema suffer (which I have sometimes but don't think that I can spell) it saved me a lot of trouble and pain.

i have a bunch of em. it doesnt hurt that much. anyone who isnt a complete weakling can handle it. regardless, pain is temporary.

your first tattoo is always the one you over-think. my advice is just to try to make sure that your tattoo isnt completely stupid/poorly done and dont worry too much about meaning. people change so much over the course of their lives that tattoos can remind us of the person we once were. whether or not thats a good thing is the question you must ask yourself. are you currently very happy with yourself as a person?

in the end, a tattoo is a modification of your appearance. some of my tattoos have a hidden personal meaning, others were decided upon impulsively. the tattoos i got without over-thinking are the ones that get the most compliments. why wouldnt they? i got them because they look cool on me. the tattoos with meaning behind them are very nice too but mostly just illicit the same stupid questions from most people. its very annoying to deal with this because of the personal nature of those tattoos. when people ask me about them, they are asking me to tell them very serious things about myself that definately do not fall under the umbrella of everyday chit-chat.

my final bit of advice is to start relatively small and get something based off an image you found online, in art, or drawn by someone. take it to the artist and tell/show him/her what you want. if you go to a trustworthy and well-recommended artist, give them a bit of artistic freedom. after all, they are artists and can provide valuable contributions to your tattoo idea.

one last thing to consider: even if they might fade and look bad on you when you're 50, getting nice tattoos in your teens and 20s make you more sexually appealing to many people. not everyone will love them, but your tattoos will make people who might not have noticed you take a second look. if you get in shape and get nice tats, you will get alot of women even if you still play pokemon. i know from experience.

Just remember that tattoo removal costs a lot more and is more painful then getting one in the first place.


ETA: I've gotten job leads because of my tattoo, and it's opened up a lot of conversations. So tattoos can be positive, even in a more professional setting.

I've got quite a few and am planning on eventually being totally covered

I currently have:
A full colour half sleeve on my left arm, from shoulder to elbow, depicting a pirate ship, japanese-style ocean waves, a message in a bottle, a shark, island with palm tree, setting sun and purple clouds with yellow lighting bolts above the ship
A small swallow and sunset on my chest (the same one Jack Sparrow has on his arm, got it when I was 18)
The crest of Hyrule on my shoulder blade in black

I'm planning on getting my half sleeve extended into a full sleeve down to my wrist, which will include a zombie pirate (very cartoony and colourful), a treasure chest, anchor, and more undecided

I'm also getting my ribs under my left arm tattooed with an image of a 1950s diner being burned down, with the image of a mysterious woman's face and hand filled with blood, and the lyrics "they burned up the diner where I always used to find her licking young boys' blood from her claws" written above and below it

Aaaaand I'm getting old school hearts and banners, with Mum and Dad on them, one on each leg

I'm then starting on my right arm sleeve, filled with imaged of things which I love
Ideas so far: hand doing the devil horns, Link from Zelda, the Nephilim (an old AFI logo), the Keyblade from Kingdom Hearts and more I can't rememer right now

So yeah I'm quite fond of tattoos

EDIT: Quick advice: don't be an idiot with them. I know I'm planning on getting full sleeves but I'm waiting until I get my degree and my teacher training course is done, so I know exactly what job I want and thus what clothes I'll be wearing to work
Do not get your hands or neck done unless you're self-employed
Don't worry about pain. Arms and back don't really hurt. Chest and ribs hurt like a *****, though
