I personally though the combat was a lot better than in Dark Souls, at least for the style of combat Geralt is supposed to do. He's a superhuman mutant so he is supposed to be lightning quick and roll around loads, evading his enemies and taking them down. The slow motion bullet time for aiming and throwing bombs and knives were great, and the magic system was well above the clumsiness that was in Dark Souls.
Except the controls could be so unresponsive and sluggish that you could be stuck doing nothing for 5 seconds (see slow-mo throwing knives, the biggest offender, so often I'm stuck standing there and getting hit before aiming mode starts), the attack animations had a level of randomness to them that you could not predict when Geralt does a regular attack or a running leap strike, enemies block and dodge almost at random, the hit effects and recoil animations are very poor at showing when either you or Geralt are getting hit (and from where), the hit detection is all sort of wonky, etc.

I loved Witcher 2 enough to play through 3 times, but the combat has a TON of technical issues. Dark Souls' predecessor, Demon's Souls, the game from which Witcher 2 takes inspiration from, does combat undeniably better

Well I personally preferred playing through The Witcher 2. I enjoyed that my attacks weren't limited by stamina like in Dark Souls so I was never left with the option to do nothing. I enjoyed the fluidity of bombs and knives and signs and general swordplay in combat. Dark Souls was fun for a while until Anor Londo when I started getting enemies too hard to deal with.

Either way, I'd say the combat in TW2 is not bad, it just has some mouse control issues, but you try playing Dark Souls with a mouse and it's much worse. Also I'd say the combat system is based more on Arkham Asylum than Dark Souls. Going from TW2 to DS was a big step up for me.

That is a bad comparison to make because even the Dark Souls devs admitted that their PC port was really half-assed, and CDProjekt has no such excuse (no matter how weak From Software's excuse is)

TW2 was perfectly playable with a mouse it just had some acceleration issues, mainly in the menus.

It looks like geralt gained about another 50 pounds of muscles, centered around his shoulders and neck. I think he is mutating into the Tank from L4D.

Either that or his outfit is the medieval version of Snakes muscle suit from MSG4.

Looks impressive (gameplay wise) although I wasn't the biggest fan of W1 or 2.

Snake? Is that you? :D

I have Witcher 1&2 on my PC, I have yet to complete them.

I should probably get around to that.
Yes. Yes you should. Goddamn it, man. Get your priorities straight.

Hmm. That looks interesting, OP. You've convinced me. I'll take two. Deliver them to my place of residence, post haste.

I think I need a tissue, or a sock, or... something.

This is what The Elder Scrolls could have been if Bethesda were as talented as CD Projekt RED. My god I can already tell this is going to be a first week purchase for me.

TO ADVENTURE!

Edit: I wonder how many settings I'll have to put on minimum to play this...

On the combat, I don't think the Witcher needs to be Dark Souls or Demon's Souls-styled; while I think those games have sublime combat, they have a leisurely pace that's at odds with CD Projekt's aim for the Witcher's combat. I think there are improvements that can be made on the Witcher 2's combat, but just throwing a Dark Souls-styled system in there wouldn't work.

Also, dear Lord those environments are beautiful.

My body is ready, but I doubt my PC is. This will prob be the game I upgrade my PC for!

That said, I'm still playing the Witcher 2, but these guys, they are becoming my favorite developer very quickly.

Looks like I'm in the minority, but I like the new costume, very battle hardened is what I would call it, very practical.

agree with this.

there is a time and place for certain styles of combat, and i think what the witcher does is perfect for the game and it's style/atmosphere.

OT: That was beautiful, hopefully they can release another trailer soon that delves into the story/narrative a bit more, or just something badass

The Witcher series stands, in my mind, as one of greatest achievements in storytelling through a videogame. The Witcher 2 also managed to push boundaries in graphics, animation, art design and combat mechanics. From first impressions, it looks as though the third installment will continue this trend. IMO, notable RPG series on the market like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Fable, Fallout and the Elder Scrolls all pale in comparison to the dark themes and political intrigue found in The Witcher. I have little doubt The Wild Hunt will be an excellent finale to the trilogy, perhaps even challenging TES as king of the open-world RPG?

Good luck to CD Project Red as they have shown themselves to be a developer who takes a genuine pro-consumer approach to business. Obviously, such an enterprise is becoming increasingly rare in gaming what with the market being largely monopolized by a handful of massive publishing giants who are really only concerned with the bottom line. It is refreshing to see a smaller company defy the current trends while also producing a product which surpasses every so-called "AAA" title on market.

Geralts new outfit looks kinda dumb, but that aside the game looks amazing so far. Definitely something I'm looking forward to!
Yeah I agree, it looks like he's wearing a tight sci fi suit but then he was also completely different in the original trailers for the witcher 2 so it might change.

just recently grinded through TW1 and TW2 again and i like TW1 a bit more i think.

combat in part one wasnt great, but i found it more interesting than the second incarnation.
Like someone else already said, combat in TW2 consists of dodging, quen and some hitting.
sure, there is the occasional aard or yrden but this is all very situational.
the higher the difficulty, the more you were dodging.
its not badly done, but gets a bit repetitive.

TW1 was quite the opposite there, everything was useful, except quen ;)
But combat in TW1 wasnt really that challenging in the first place, Gerald got very powerful quite fast.

I hope they add something to combat, to make it more interesting again, while retaining the challenge.

and yeah, Gerald looks kinda dumb in the trailer ;)

Wouldn't it be great if we got to wear that awesome black cloak everywhere?
