I would agree with you, but last year in my ethics lecture, during a discussion, one girl thought bestiality should be immoral because of the possibility of a hybrid man-dog offspring. There are some truths a person should know, especially at a university level. Especially when these are the people who are going to be running things, affecting the lives of others.

Well several people around here didn't know these things until recently:

That Germany still exists.

That Germany isn't Nazi Germany anymore.

(Above were not people.. but countries not all too far south of us.. I live in Sweden.)

Who Stalin is.

Their own Prime Minister's name.

What that little thing in Spain is. (Portugal)

They were all around the age of 14. <-- Not part of the list, hopefuly.

an asian kid in my COLLEGE HONORS HISTORY class did not know the US had ever used nuclear weapons.

Dead serious. Didn't even get an "Oh of course, I forgot those"
Did not know at all.

He did know about the jap concentration camps during world war 2 though... Which most schools remove from curriculum

In a college level Baking and Pastry arts II course we were baking cakes to assemble them for tortes later in the semester. One person came up to me and asked for help because the batter was leaking out of his cake pan. I took one look at the pan and noticed that it was a spring form cake pan. When I explained his mistake to him, he replied "What the hell is this used for then? You can't bake cakes in this." I calmly explained what it was used for, and then quickly found something else to do, far away from him.

Quite recently I started listening and got addicted to the Beatles, I had known of them before hand but never listened but a day or two ago while discussing music in school a few ladies asked who were the Beatles...I was close to killing them, considering these guys were bigger than Jesus and they had never heard of them was rather upsetting, a few weeks earlier a few people asked who Winston Churchill and Stalin were and a number of other important historical figures.

So I ask you Escapists (or whatever you're called) do you know of any criminal lack of knowledge towards important people? Please post here so we may mock them.
Hahahahhaha! Haha I like you :D Yeah all the time, which is quite fucking appalling. I mean, the knowledge is out there, there's internet, libraries, schools, bookshops, your parents. How the fuck can you not know that Africa is not a dish :S It's scary but the thing that frightens me the most is when your standing there trying to correct them AND THEY are the ones who think they're right...

Dear oh dear, what have we come to. This is the 21 centuary, we should be this advanced uber super race, communicating through telepathy, curing all diseases and stopping war. Yet we're still as primitive as before. Alright alright I'm a little off topic, but stupidity seems to be something to be pursued nowadays. Ignorance is thriving while the few intellectuals that exist gets to fuck off.
A rather depressing thing I found is that in Google Trends "Stupid" is more trendy than "Intelligent" in almost every country. (I think India and another country were the only ones to favour intelligence).

I was asked what The Holocaust was...I falcon punched the guy soon after
If the person asking you was born and raised in Germany, then that's actually not surprising. The country as a whole has developed the policy of not talking about the Holocaust, and schools don't teach it there.
Kinda true, we had WW2 in history class, but the holocaust part was a 5min speech by a classmate.

I just used google trends and while "intelligence" was lower than "stupid"

"smart" was much higher than "stupid"

Could be worse a guy i met in a pub, who said you could not call them good, because they were formed before 1990, and music before the 90's sucked. I have never formed such an instant dislike of someone ever.

Those people should be shot unless they are less than 8 years old.

Anway, I would have to say that Bill Gates, Queen Elizabeth, JFK, FDR, Mao, Atilla, the Rolling Stones, and guttenberg are very important or very known at least due to Pop culture and you'd have to be living in quite a world to not even recognize the names.

Also if you can't find China on the map... Or recognize australia as a country and a continent.
