Okay, who the hell was praising Dragon Age Inquisition?

When a game that I didn't like gets rated well, it usually doesn't bother me. Different strokes for different folks you know. And I can usually at leas see why they liked it, even if I disagree.

But Dragon Age: Inquisition really baffles me how so many people liked it (it even won the Escapist reader choice GOTY if I recall correctly)

The only theory I have is that reviewers are under some obligation to finish the game, and maybe because they were able to spend so much time on it they had a better time of it

And honestly if I did have eight hours a day to play it, I probably would enjoy the game more. It's just, I sort of have a life, and I can't justify spending so much time doing boring things like collecting minerals or tracking down landmarks, or walking some asshole's buffalo a hundred godamn miles at a snail's pace, just to grind enough power to do the things I actually want to do

DA:I is a perfect example of what I talk about in my thread about AAA titles being overated.

As you say, different strokes for different folks......usually. But just look at the comments in this thread so far about DA:I - it's pretty impossible IMO for so many high profile reviewers to be so far off the mark and out of sync with general opinion, unless paid off or beyond awful at their job (and thus shouldn't be in it).

DA:I is the worst game ever IMO. Not worst in that it's unplayable, but worst in that something so obviously produced with so little care or passion, and created for nothing more than profit and via a "tickbox only" approach. Yes games, and all entertainment media, are created with profit in mind nowadays; but no that shouldn't be the sole focus of them.

Couldn't agree more with the OP. DA:I is not an awful game per say, it's just not in any way shape or form either a patch on DA:O, or enjoyable. And it's also a massive insult to RPG lovers that a dumb, MMO style slogfest is even classed as an RPG IMO.

I hated my time with DA:I, loathed it fully. But what grated me the most was those who claimed that it took a step back in the direction of DA:O - it didn't. It took all the failings of DA:2 and added some more.

Eh. Despite my many, many gripes with DAI I m still enjoying it more than DAO.

Origins was an incredibly by-the-numbers game. Ancient Evil is invading Not Middle Earth with Not-Orcs. Elite Militant Order With no Oversight is our Only Hope. Now go meet the wizards, meet the dwarves and meet the elves then go kill a dragon.

It had the same problem with the combat getting stagnant and repetitive when there was still 75% of the game to go.

It was also one of the ugliest games I've ever played, even by 2009 standards.

The only reason I ever completed DAO was because I once found my self stuck at home with an injured leg, no internet connection adnd no good books for a few weeks.

Well, that isn't entirely true. It just turns out to be focused on a different "Beep me when the apocalypse comes" end-times arc.

I suppose that's technically true, sure. But the variously incompetent rogue panto villain makes for a decidedly less interesting and engaging scenario than---

---mythos relating to Mythal/Asha'bellanar/Flemeth and a great character the player's spent almost the entirety of the game fighting alongside.

To be fair I tend to find anything elven boring, given they're such an overused know-it-all fantasy concept - when the reveals came in DA:I I was initially quite disappointed; it's just another layer of mystical know-it-alls... But after playing Trespasser I at least came to appreciate and even enjoy how BioWare more or less did a bait and switch, and the grand mythic arc manages to be interesting to me because Flemeth and Solas are terrific characters.

I've never played an MMORPG that would be able to stand on its own as a single-player RPG. Quite amusing then, is the fact that almost everything I've heard about DA:I makes it sounds like a single-player MMORPG.

Yeah pretty-much this.

Bioware never missed an opportunity to confuse quality with quanitity, pad their game to an insane degree and not bother with any of the depth of characters and world that made the first and (to a lesser extent) second fun.

I liked it, but even I admit it had flaws. Of course I'm of the mind that Origins wasn't as good in retrospect either, in fact Bioware games post KOTOR/Jade Empire have been decent at release but years later in retrospect lose a LOT of shine and the flaws really show.

I liked it. Good world building, you get a feeling you're building up your army and good replayability. Also I loved the crafting. The little stories in all the different zones were a tad understated perhaps but it did help to make the world feel very big.

I do think a lot of it was an overreaction against the backlash they got for DA2 (which I still think was an excellent game buried under rushed design and cut corners). This sort of thing always happens when a developer claims to have 'listened to the fans'. That's why the overall story went back to generic big bad and the chosen hero tropes.

Most people who dislike it seem to just let their expectations get in the way of enjoying the game and blame it for not doing something new. I guess spending 20 dollars on a game just because you want to make a post about how bad you think it is might be worth it to some people.

And yet it still looks and animates worse than, say, Half Life 2, a game that came out in 2004.

ME1 looked like shit too. ME2 was a bit better. ME3 came dangerously close to looking okay, if you kinda squinted a bit.

Bioware just doesn't do graphics worth a damn. Although there might be hope for them yet, since DA:I actually looks almost okay, aside from the still shitty animation and the aforementioned Bioware Face. Which is kind of like saying I'm in good health aside from the three broken ribs.

So I tried replaying the game recently and jeez, those facial animations are just atrocious. Visually the game looks fantastic with some nice effects, detailed environments, cool armour designs, high textures, all that stuff... right up until the moment it begins to move. Bioware are just downright terrible at faces and the realistic high resolution textures of Inquisition amps the uncanny-valley problem up to a ridiculous degree. It was easily overlooked in Mass Effect because everything looked a bit cartoonish, but with Inquisitions attempt at realism it really stands out. As much as I hate to make the comparison because it's become a bit of a trope at this point, Witcher 3 just did it so very much better that it's hard to go back and stomach Inquisitions animations.

Nitpicking about visuals aside when I first played the game shortly after it came out I found it alright, with my major complaints being the poor antagonist, the shitty AI and horribly gimped tactical view, the complete lack of any compelling side-quests, and combat which might have been alright but for the piss poor AI and spongy 'tons of hp' enemies.

What I did like about it were the environments, the neat ways some of the decisions from previous games could carry over, a couple of the companions were fun, and the music which was quite good. Nice sense of scale as well, with impressively huge dragons and massive caverns and whatnot. Story meanwhile was hit & miss. I feel the opportunity to make the main character some sort of Joan D'Arc style religious figurehead was a bit wasted and as mentioned previously the antagonist was weak as all hell, but there were a few cool moments and I did enjoy some of the character interactions.

I did end up picking up the Tresspasser dlc when I saw it was on sale a while back and it's neat. Certainly better than the games default ending anyway. But if someone weren't enjoying the game to begin with it's nowhere near good enough to change any minds.

I actually liked DA:I somewhat.

The main story missions were good. Yes flawed in many ways, but the politics angle was played nicely, Coryphaeus was a decent villain (not quite as menacing as he was in the Legacy DLC but he was ok), the Skyhold and the crafting was a neat idea that suffered overdose.

I absolutely love the environments. The zones are huge and gorgeous, so much variety and style!

And then they suck all the fun out of the game with millions of fetch quests...

I'll occasionally pull it out and play it to see the environments and enjoy the game for that.

The MMO approach to questing was what really let DA:I down for me. The strategy map was kind of fun, if shallow as all get out, but it eventually got to the point where you were grinding tedious filler to get to the story content.

The actual story and characters were fine, but it peaked in the middle with the Siege of Haven and never really got any better.

As fantasy RPGs go, it ain't so great. I'd recommend Pillars of Eternity and The Witcher 3 as good fantasy RPGs.

I never really liked Origins. Not-Orcs led by a Not-Dragon try to conquer the world. Fairly generic as stories go. Plus it was the ugly brown/grey desaturated look that games went for back then (and sometimes even now). It's why I gave the second game a skip. But people have had nice things to say about the third one, so maybe I might try it. Later.

As for Andromeda, I never got on the hype train for it. Plus given ME3, my expectations are fairly low.

Also the reason the game looks ugly because it began development since 2004. All the cutting edge graphical look was devouted to Mass Effect.

And yet it still looks and animates worse than, say, Half Life 2, a game that came out in 2004.

ME1 looked like shit too. ME2 was a bit better. ME3 came dangerously close to looking okay, if you kinda squinted a bit.

Bioware just doesn't do graphics worth a damn. Although there might be hope for them yet, since DA:I actually looks almost okay, aside from the still shitty animation and the aforementioned Bioware Face. Which is kind of like saying I'm in good health aside from the three broken ribs.

Most people who dislike it seem to just let their expectations get in the way of enjoying the game and blame it for not doing something new.

I didn't have any expectations. I heard mixed things about it but didn't pay much attention.

I picked it up on a whim when I saw it on going cheap.

I guess spending 20 dollars on a game just because you want to make a post about how bad you think it is might be worth it to some people.

DA is probably my favourite game franchise, and I will even defend the positive qualities of DA2 (even if it is a deeply flawed game), but DAI is just boring to play. The combat is dull, the tactics system was ruined, and the main story is incomplete (you have to play the Trespasser DLC to see the real ending). Its the very essence of a mile wide and an inch deep; heaps of stuff to do, but almost none of it is interesting or fun to actually do. I've played DAO 17 times, DA2 five times, and I barely made it thought DAI once.
