I've only ever heard the Clash version.
I just listened to that and looked up the original.
Gotta say Mike Ness's version is the closest thing to a country song I've ever liked.
Mike Ness has a lot of country influence in his music. The thing that makes much of his stuff better than most of the country you hear, is that he is influenced by old school country, not this newfangled closer to pop than real country music crap that has infested the airwaves these days.

The Dead Kennedys also do a great cover of that song. In their version the main course is "I Fought the Law and I Won." Much more punk than The Clash's version.
Yeah, it talks about the riots in San Francisco after a civil worker got away with murder.
The people in San Fran protested and the cops tried to get them away because they didn't have a permit.Once the cops started beating people most of the protesters ran but the gay community noticeably said "fuck this" and fought back against the fascists.

I had not idea that the song was about Dan White murdering George Moscone and Harvey Milk. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. Now the line "I blew George and Harvey's brains out with my six gun" makes a lot more sense. It puts the song on a whole new level. I guess I guess should have paid more attention to the lyrics.
