Decoy Doctorpus what you have is a good start. Keep it up and straight sevens will be a webcomic I read on a regular basis.

Personally, i don't see the big deal with Penny Arcade, the art is.. mediocre and the stories suck. and i'm sorry but your webcomic does not make me laugh, the art is good, that much i will say, but you need more.. subtle wit. Give the readers something to think about, it's what makes XKCD popular among things like... CAD...

You did a great job drawing it but the jokes were sort of hit and miss for me.

This won't be helpful in the least, but I can't find anything wrong with your webcomic....In fact, I very much like it.

...Sorry.

Thought I'd give you an idea of how this is all done.

We start off with a simple (read: 'retarded') sketch of how the comic will be laidout. A lot of the jokes are visual or rely on character expressions so I find it an easier format to work with than a written script.

Mal then comes over and depending on how much we've drunk and which game we're playing at the time, will give me either exactly what I asked for or something entirely different. Usually with each element of the picture on seperate pages. I then take a photo of the drawing (we have a scanner we're just too lazy to plug it in)

Finally I rev up my trust tablet (A wacom 'whateverthefuck' a model so old they don't list it on the website any more) and start doing my thing, often throwing in some of my own touches as I go (Mal has a thing for heavy straight lines whereas I prefer big swooping curves) then I back everything up and upload.

Ze final (or semi final if I find another mistake)result is

Looking at the first two on the first page, all I can say is be very, very aware of the mouths, they looked a bit too much like... Tim Buckley's mouths... the classic U... U U U
It burns my soul.
The mouths on the one above me seem a bit better

The jokes don't really do it for me either but, I'm not a fan of gaming/geek webcomics anyway.

Yeah the mouthes are mine (if you look at the drawing mal did it lacks a mouth) and I have a very cartoonish style. That being said I'm working on making them a little bit more realistic to match Mal's more detailed style.

And honestly, I think all the hate on CAD is a little bit overdone, it's not great certainly, but it's not as bad as 'your webcomic is bad...' and everyone else on the internet makes it out to be. The guy who runs it seems a little crazy though, not as crazy as the guy who does VG cats though, I read he threw a coffee cup (a VG cats coffee cup?) at a girls head at a con. And hey, for all it's faults, CAD isn't quite as bad as GODMODE.

I don't hate CAD that much, some of the strips amuse me. But, the bored cynical expression he tries to put on his characters annoys me, Lilah especially, she has a sort of squinty, something-smells look.
So, just make sure you give your characters emotion ^^ like in this new strip above me, when the guy is slumped on the desk, there's some real feeling in those eyes, and that's goood stuff :)

For some reason, I like how his eyes looked in the original sketches when he's slumped over the desk. Alternatively, I think the final would've been better if he had creases in his forehead or something.

Comics and stuff
Good, good...I like how you've already started having a storyline rather than random comics. Most comics like this start out having whatever random jokes the author can think up and only start having storylines quite a bit later. This though, this is consistant.

My only problem is that the art of him lying on the desk looks very much like you copied and pasted it from the first panel to the third. If you copy and paste artwork, it helps if you alter something in the copy--at least change the expression on the face.

Besides that, though, I like it. It's absurd, with just enough realism to make it relatable.
