Finally beating that game was pure satisfaction back when I was 12...

The truly awesome could beat that game without the code. My brother and I did that in co-op (not a single death) in front of the neighborhood (14 boys, there was something in the water that made Y sperm super potent in the men) to establish our status as the best gamers on the block. Between Contra and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out we were undisputed champs.

nail gun mode for freedom fighters - such a laugh to send them flying into walls a ceilings and having them stick hang there from where the bullet hit.
oh and the lost world level selecting cheat - the only way to possibly complete the game

I've always liked the cheat codes that unlock new playable characters, so I think my favorite is the code that unlocks Drizz't Do'Urden in Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance. Complete with Twinkle and Icingdeath.

You could unlock him in that game? I knew he was in there as your character to play as for your 'test' to play on the hardest difficulty, but I didn't even know it was possible to have him for the rest of the game.

(I never did pass that test either, as far as I remember it was called 'the Gauntlet', and it was hard as hell)

Two of my favourites:

In Medieval: Down, Up, Square, Triangle, Triangle, Circle, Down, Up, Square, Triangle. It opens up the smaller cheat menu, but I liked it because it spells out the phrase Dust To Dust.

In Tomb Raider II: Level Skip/Lara Explodes cheat, mainly because I never knew the difference between the two and often exploded when I was trying to get to Venice.
