What is the point of cheating?

Honestly, if you remove all the threat out of the game there is no challenge. No challenge then the winning at the end is very hollow indeed. What is the point of playing then, you might as well go onto youtube and just watch the ending cut screen.

For that reason I would have to say the best cheats, if one is to use them, are those which do not effect the game in any way to make it pointless to play. Cheats designed to make the game easier for those who do need a crutch without removing the whole ability to lose out right.
Obviously you have never used flying cars or any of the classic cheats which turn an average game into hours of mindless joy; or you have never had an AOE cheat fight where both players would ctrl+c, ctrl+v swarms of cheat units to fight eachother.

Morrowind: Soultrap on target for 2 seconds and fortify stat, aim at your feet and it is permanent. It also works for levitation but you can't get down; the most fun was had by giving ourself enough acrobatics to leap over mountains, and by summoning an army of skeletons and sending them to fight the bosses of the game, by the end of the fight you won't be able to see the floor from all the dead skeletons.

Agreed, hoping you mean Age Of Empires, and on that topic E=MCTrooper.
But really i think the most fun cheat would have to be flying cars in San Andreas.
Whereas the most helpful would be the Ammo+Health Cheat in GTAIV, which also takes the cake for the most newbish.
The most unnecessary cheat would have to be the one in the sims where you can move things even if the sims are interacting with it.
Let's just say, moving a bed whilst 2 girls are going at it? Not that revealing, but can take a 10 year olds mind to strange and exotic places.

Who said anything about a crutch? In this thread's opening post, I mentioned I was rolling an Oblivion character with one (and only one) cheat code...but not because I can't beat Oblivion. It's because I've beaten that game completely, utterly, viciously to death and I needed to spice up the experience a little bit. I've made Hundred Percent Chameleon Suits before, but it's always in the lategame. I wondered "what if I just started out with 100%C and eliminated the wandering around? What would the earlygame be like?" I'm finding it great fun, which is extending the life of a game I've sunk something like 500 hours into across my various characters.

Without a cheat code, the game would probably have been permanently shelved by now.

The jetpack cheat from Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2. That was so much fun and enabled to you instantly score infinite amounts of points.

The God Mode cheat from Hitman 2 was also brilliant fun even though it removed all challenge and point in the game.

(Red, Blue)

Take the desired item and put it in place 6 of your inventory.

Fly to Vermillion City and talk to the old man, and take the lesson in how to use Pokeballs.

Fly to Cinnabar Island and use surf on the right side of the island and swim up and down.

Keeping doing so until attacked by MissingNo.

Kill MissingNo.

Repeat until you have as many items as you need. =)

(There are variations on how talking to the old man affects the cheat, but its all lies, this has never failed for me =])

ALSO (Silver, Gold)

Put a Pokemon in an empty box.

Switch Boxes (to any).

Turn off Gameboy when its says "PLEASE DO NOT TURN OFF THE POWER".

Turn the Gameboy back on.

Take pokemon out of box, you now have 2 =)

(Warning: May result in loss of pokemon. Cheat roughly 80% effective. UAOR)

Most cheat codes are nothing more then crutches, never intended for more then debugging but used by players to defeat a game they couldn't otherwise beat without cheating. Making yourself invincible, the most used cheat, doesn't give anything to the game at all but reduce the challenge to zero.

While there are some people who have played a game through, like yourself, whom might experiment to see what other outcomes there could be in the game and look for Easter eggs they are not the majority. For every one of us, I've done this too, there are many others who are using the same cheat codes so they can beat a game they wouldn't otherwise been able to defeat. They have no interest in asking the 'what if' they just need to feel special by defeating a game and can not rationalise that they are not the ones doing it: The cheat codes are. Same reason we find these losers in online play so much, as disgusting as that is.

When you ask the question what cheat code is best, it is this majority which will have the loudest voice. I'm not saying that all people here, a gaming site, would be using the cheats in such a way but I can bet safely that a large chunk would of at some time in their lives. Cheat codes are mostly used for that purpose, not the Easter egg hunting what if crowd.

We get a form of cheat codes, I don't consider them cheats myself, which do wacky things. Those are far more fun! These add a different element to the game, even if just a humorous one most times, and hence should be rated as the best. Instead, look through this list, and you will find it is the most common crutch based cheats which are being put forth as 'best.'

I was trying to highlight that the best cheat codes are those which do not detract from the game what so ever. This means most of the cheat codes mentioned here are on my list of 'worse' not best. Not denouncing you for cheating to see what will happen, but just realise that most people don't cheat for any other reason to beat something they couldn't otherwise beat on their own.
