If there is a word that emcompasses Hell, Pointless, Tedious, and Bullshit Drama then that. I spent 3 years doing fuck all and being bullied, then 2 years when they say "this is actually important." A retarded discipline system which let literally every single one of my bullies get away with everything they did while if I did something wrong I'd get in trouble because it wasn't expected of me. Finally being in a college I get some perspective and you know what I've learned?

Everything, fucking everything, from values to work ethic to actual facts were wrong! Maths and Science were the only things taught right in my school, since I've left employers and college tutors have all told me "Yeah thats wrong, you're meant to do it like this" or "It actually means this". And y'know what? They don't punish me for not knowing things I was never fucking taught! Fuck school it fucked with my mental stability.

Even brainwashing is a form of education, so how are any of us wrong? I am assuming you learned to write when you went to school, thus you're able to write brilliant posts in forums being cool because you're against the government. It's fun to see a living stereotype sometimes.

Education - the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.

Please enlighten me on how these things are similar. One is done by means/methods that are forced upon the individual by an outside source, while the other is done by the means/methods of the individual's desire. The key term in this argument is forced upon.

Furthermore, I am perplexed as to how the word "education" has become so synonymous with "school". There are many, many, MANY more individuals that I've listed whose words, insights and accomplishments have transcended time who've had little to no formal schooling.

And FYI, I was reading before I ever stepped foot inside of a school. Hell, the first few days I was reading to my classmates because I was the only one, outside of the teacher and her aide, that could read. Maybe it's because I'm left-handed, maybe it's because I was a quick learner, or maybe it's because my mother and father both read to me frequnetly when I was very young - even though both of them worked 40+ hours a week. Perhaps it's a combination of the three; who is to say with all certainty? I can tell you this with certainty, however: I did not require school to learn to read and write, I learned these things from my parents who *gasp* actually had decent parenting skills! (which, I guess in all honesty, does constitute a bit of luck on my part)

What I have learned after a lot of time on the internet is that trying to have a debate with someone who substitute facts with opinions and their opinion and is that the government is evil is pointless.

It's not that the government is "evil", per se, it is that they hold perceived power. To govern is not an evil, in and of itself, - we all do it on a day-to-day basis in some form or another - it is that the collective individuals who wield said power do not do so for the benefit of all; they do it to further themselves. A theme I've always kept track of, and one of the main reasons I enjoy the old Legend of Zelda games. It taught me a good life lesson when looking at how we live on this planet:

"Power, without the Wisdom to temper it and the Courage to guide its path, will ultimate destroy itself."

So no, government is NOT evil. Power, without Wisdom and Courage, IS evil; and I'm pretty sure that, even if you keep poor track of the news lately, you'd agree - the United States has used its Power poorly, due to the lack of Wisdom and Courage behind their decisions, and its own decline has proven this.

Wow, that was a tangent. In conclusion, I have learned SOME things from school, but nothing so substantial or unique that it cannot be found outside of school. I'f you're talking about high school, you have a slight point. However, it is still a place where those who are motivated to learn, can learn.
The two years I spent in high school (before going on to take college courses for high school credit) may have been horrible, but even it had it's moments. My Biology Honors class, for example, is one that I will never forget. I learned so much from that class that the experience can only be compared to sex, just in the mind.
The teacher not only used a reformed grading system (the 4-point scale as opposed to ABCDF) but also used it effectively. She actually graded on comprehension much more than on memorization.

In all my other classes, I forced my teachers to teach me by asking questions and facilitating discussion. If something didn't make sense to me or I wanted to know something extra, I asked questions. I asked so many questions, in fact, that I once had a teacher tell me to shut up.

I am entitled to an education in school and if it is not working as well as it should, I forcefully extract information from it. The key to getting the most out of your educators is not to treat them as an authority figure, but to treat them as someone who is supposed to be teaching you.

College, on the other hand, is heaven compared to high school. You not only get to have much more freedom in choosing your classes, but there are generally much less idiotic worksheets than in high school.

That'd be great if I didn't despise the taste of lager/cider/beer, and had made any friends. I was a late transfer to my University and I live at home, so the only times that I really socialise are in the labs and even then there's not much talking. I wouldn't say they're more mature, alcohol is more readily available and uni students are well known for drunken shenanigans. I'm assuming things will get better, but right now I really miss the old school days.

it's a sort of rite of passage, something that you go through to be accepted in our modern society. Nothing really else, especially in times were knowledge is so widely distributed.

it drives me flipping mad when I see so many impressionable young folk scared into these places. You don't go to school to become a 'competent' *insert profession*, as much as you go to become 'official' basically.

Yes, we all know that we attend school to learn and interact with one another, but it's also important to seek out challenging work or assignments that will make you think and really test your knowledge of a certain subject or class. That way, you will learn how well you are doing in that one area of studies and allow you to learn some things that you probably wouldn't have if you were playing it safe the whole time.
