"Learning."

Generally my favorite part about school was learning. My least favorite was the work associated with the class.

Douchebags.

It's only because the school I went to was absolutely filled to the brim people I hated. Could barely walk down the hall without getting made fun of or seeing two people about to get in a fight.
Misanthropy! (See also: Metro) Trophies to the usual address!

My school was a six-floored abomination of a structure with concrete playgrounds (an unusually common feature in that part of the world). The local mini-buses had signs on them saying "Sha Tin college students are expected to behave with courtesy". At one point the whole bloody school of 1,500 students had to be summoned by the principal to be reprimanded.

There was one kid (we never found out who) who had been doing his seconds on the floor of at least two separate toilets, on the changing room floors and allegedly in the pool. He had quite the high score before he was caught. Even the teachers were getting in a fix every now and then. I heard one English woman tried to kill herself.

On the plus side, my friend got a good field trip to Vietnam out of it for his Year 11 history class. He and his classmates were allowed to fire AK-47s on a range. The teacher in charge copped hell for that.

Misery.

Complete and utter misery. You are made to feel like utter shit. Your opinions mean nothing, your ideas, somehow even less. Independent thought is hammered out of you. You are encouraged to believe you have one choice; Blend in with the crowd, or be punished for standing out, and for all of that, what did I learn?

Only that I should at all times assume I'm alone. That nobody will help me. Damn better than waiting on help that never arrives.

I'm going to follow after CapnMorgan (without the crazy, if you see what I mean) with my word: "Bureaucracy".

Public school is oppressive, totalitarian and a self-supporting system of mediocrity. While every college and university in the world has thrived on being cutting-edge and hip, everything High School and lower is in no hurry to change the archaic system it works within. To get people to send their kids to your school, all you have to do is be in the area. That's it. There's no incentive to change what they perceive as not broken.

School is a soul-crushing place where your teachers double as cops, they're all incompetent or power-tripping, and there are no limits to what they can consider crimes. All good times with your friends, learning and enjoying spending time with the few good teachers (who aren't just in it for a daily paycheck) are despite the school system, not because of it. If you enjoyed your school days, it wasn't that school isn't awful. It's just that you were lucky.

bullying
worst thing is that for most of the years that I was on the forced education system the teachers just didn't give a flying fuck or sided with the bullies blaming it on "behavioral disorders"
