Nintendo paid for both Bayonetta 2 and is also paying for Bayonetta 3's development. they literally pretty much own the series rights 50/50 with Sega now.

because of this you will never EVER see Bayonetta 2 or 3 or any other future Bayonetta games on other platforms unless Nintendo decides to relax on exclusivity rights, but i think we all know how much Nintendo loves to keep things exclusive to their platforms.
Yeah, now it's just depressing how often have to be reminded that the game is never going anywhere but Nintendo due to how rights work. You'd think they would have learned by now

I still haven't gotten a Switch yet. Old prejudices die hard. In Nintendo's case, real hard.

Bayonetta 2 almost made me interested but I would honestly just prefer a PC port like with the original. I wouldn't consider getting a Switch until after an initial price drop. I just don't have nearly as much time to play games as it is and my PC has plenty for me to play already.
I want Ninja Gaiden back so much... Bayonetta's just a pretender to the throne.

What's the nature of the prejudice, exactly?

This is not to say there aren't legitimate things to hold against Nintendo. Just curious.

Especially since it didn't even sell well. I know Nintendo probably wants to use it as a way to appeal to a different demographic than its usual customer, but games like Bayonetta are not the reason I like Nintendo. Mario Kart, Yoshi, Zelda, and other classic Nintendo titles draw me in. Bayonetta and Platinum would be better off with the game as multi-plat if we're talking sheer exposure and sales.

TLDR: I'm salty.

Eh they have so little 3rd party support, I'll allow them Bayonetta 2.

well Bayonetta isn't meant to be the reason you enjoy those classic Nintendo franchise's. like you said, Nintendo is appealing to another demographic with Bayonetta and there's nothing wrong with that. people can enjoy both if they want to.

Bayonetta and Platinum would be better off with the game as multi-plat if we're talking sheer exposure and sales.
How exactly? Bayonetta still sold like shit even when it was multiplatform and Bayonetta 2 wouldn't have even been made if not for Nintendo as literally no one else wanted to support the franchise. not Sega, not Sony and not Microsoft.

without Nintendo's funding, Bayonetta 2 and Bayonetta 3 wouldn't even exist.

Well "like shit" can mean very different things. If I had to pick one game to describe as selling like shit it would be Bayo 2
https://kotaku.com/bayonetta-2s-sales-are-depressing-1638976847

200,000 vs just under 40,000 (or 30,000 if the statistic lower down the page is correct) in the first week of sales. Bayo 1 may not have been a smashing success but it certainly performed demonstrably better when not exclusive to Nintendo. Even now with the Switch release Bayo 2 is floundering http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2018-02-19-bayonetta-2-physical-switch-sales-down-on-wii-u

I understand why Nintendo is keeping it exclusive and I'm glad Bayonetta is still around (for now), but I don't see Nintendo exclusivity keeping the franchise alive much longer if these are the results of being locked to their console. It may have gotten a second game made but it ended up on the wrong set of shelves. Time will tell, but I think it's more likely a studio circles back around to a game that sold a couple hundred thousand copies than a publisher keeps bankrolling games that don't make money.

Edit: Just noticed you mentioned Bayonetta 3 and had to do a quick google. I am genuinely surprised to hear that is already confirmed. Good for Platinum!

Haven't bought one and I can't see myself doing so. Nintendo's whole approach to game design just doesn't appeal to me. Good luck to the folks who enjoy their stuff, but I doubt they could do anything short of completely changing their style to make me interested.

you forgot to compare hardware sales to software sales ratios.

Wii U sold 13.56 million hardware units
PS3 sold about 86.9 million units

200,000 copies of Bayonetta 1 sold on PS3 isn't impressive at all considering the PS3 sold a shitload more console units than the Wii U did. that's actually pretty depressing that Bayonetta 1 couldn't even break 1 million units on a platform with an almost 87 million userbase.

BTW with the Bayonetta 1 & 2 port being recently released on Switch. that will give us a better idea on if people are "actually" interested in that franchise or not.

as for Bayonetta and Nintendo Exclusivity. this Developer interview with Kamiya pretty much solidifies Bayonetta as a Nintendo exclusive series going forward.

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/02/hideki_kamiya_shares_background_of_bayonetta_3_development

For Bayonetta 1, we signed a contract with Sega and received funds from them, then we proposed a design for the game and entered production. All of the rights belong to Sega. At the time, our company had only just been established, and we weren't properly equipped for multiplatform development, so after discussing with Sega, we decided to develop the game exclusively for Xbox 360. However, after that, one of Sega's trading partners ended up making a port for PS3, at Sega's behest. More recently, they also decided that a Steam version should be developed, which was released last year. Sega owns the rights to all of these versions

When we started making Bayonetta 2, we initially received funds from Sega to develop the game for multiple platforms, but the project was halted due to circumstances at Sega. Nintendo then stepped in to continue funding the game, allowing us to finish it. As such, the rights belong to Sega and Nintendo.
to which he then goes on to say

As for Bayonetta 3, it was decided from the start that the game was going to be developed using Nintendo's funding. Without their help, we would not have been able to kick off this project. All of the rights still belong to Sega and Nintendo. The rights owners decided that the game should be made for Switch.

bayonetta 2 ended up selling 820k copies of the game, which on the wiiu, giving it's base, is not that bad. the first one oin Xbox one sold 930k and on ps3 it was 1.2 millions. sure 2.1 millions copies is much more than 820k, but there was way less wiiu than there was ps3 and xbox 360 combined.

as for the release on switch, well, the article you linked is from UK, and UK sales charts are always a bit off compared to the rest of the world.

You forgot to read the articles I think.

That 200,000 figure was the first week of sales- not all time. And regardless of the ratio of install-base to copies purchased that is way more games sold which equals more money in the developer and publisher's pockets. Telling shareholders that worse sales are fine because proportionately more people bought it isn't a victory, it's damage control.

And again, my second link is Eurogamer reporting that Bayonetta 2 sold fewer (albeit physical) copies on the Switch than it did when it originally launched on the Wii U. So among Switch owners there is very little interest in Bayonetta as a franchise. I mean shit, the PC version of Bayo 1 has sold 170,000 https://www.pcgamesn.com/bayonetta/bayonetta-pc-sales-numbers and it was a years late port of a relatively niche game.

I completely understand and am not arguing with you that Bayonetta is and will be a Nintendo exclusive. I just don't see the point. At least put it on PC which doesn't directly compete with the Switch in the "console war".

i'll admit i did miss that part when i read your article.

so basically, yeah 2.1 million units is more than 820K, but PS3 sold about 86.90 million consoles and Xbox 360 sold about 85.80 million units. Wii U only sold 13.56 million lifetime sales so when you compare Wii U sales of Bayonetta to multiplatform sales on PS3 and 360 of Bayonetta 1. 2.1 million copies sold between 360 and PS3 isn't impressive at all and is actually quite depressing tbh.

http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=bayonetta

so yeah, Bayonetta did sell pretty shit even when it was multiplatform.

ok but STEAM is also much MUCH cheaper than console game's. i've lost count of how many times i've heard my friends say they have STEAM full of hundreds of games that they don't actually play because everything is that dirt cheap on it.

cost is probably why 170,000 STEAM users have bought it on PC, but why Bayo 2 and 3 won't come to STEAM is simply because of Nintendo's funding and their exclusivity rights. without Nintendo's funding Bayonetta 2 and 3 wouldn't even exist and that's pretty much what this all comes down to.

It's alright. Not really that impressive, even as portability goes. (my phablet phone has some pretty impressive hardware as well, does a lot more than most phones, has a screen just as large, doubles as a 'desktop' PC when docked, and ACTUALLY fits in my pocket) But still a neat little console. My girlfriend enjoys playing Mario Kart and the like with me, so there's that.

But, for right now...

Pretty much this. But, even then, not really that great of a 'port machine', since most ports end up drastically downgraded.

Even so, I like it. Don't regret buying it. (yet) Looking forward to playing the new Kirby next week.

However, my-fucking-god do I HATE the Joy-Cons. Worst. Controller. Ever. My right thumb cramps up within minutes of trying to use the right analog stick, even when the fucking things are docked either into the console or the 'comfort'[footnote]Never in the history of the world has there EVER been a more ironic name for a device.[/footnote] grip. And those atrocious shoulder buttons and triggers...

My advice to anyone considering getting one: Unless you have tiny, Trumpian-sized baby hands, get yourself a Pro controller ASAP. It'll save your hands from looking like you have early-onset rheumatoid arthritis.

Another wrinkle is, when you get down to it, Platinum went to Sony, MS, and other companies to get Bayonetta 2 off the ground. None of them wanted it. Nintendo was the only company willing to finance it and made a big push for it. They were merely doing their job in getting new titles made and making partnerships.

I finally caved an bought a Switch this past weekend. A nearby store offered a console + Mario Odyssey bundle deal that saved me ?30. Also got me a secondhand copy of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and a Pro Controller. So, I felt like sharing my first impressions. Feels a bit awkward to revive an old thread, but whatever, I announced my intent to get a Switch in my own OP and making a new topic just to say I followed through is lame.

I mostly like it so far. The ability to take it out of the dock, take it outside and continue playing without interruption is a nice quality of life sort of thing. I'm mostly happy with the build quality, except for the kickstand and the docking station, which both feel kind of cheap and frail. The system itself does feel better and especially the Pro Controller has a nice weighty and durable feel to it. I've heard the console can run very hot while docked, to the point it warps the plastic, but I haven't encountered any problems with that. Temperatures remain within acceptable bounds. Haven't got around to playing it much. Just some Xenoblade, which is a fairly good looking game for hardware that comes in such a small package.

What I really don't like about the Switch tho, is its Wifi reception. It's simply poor. I have to bring it within 3 meters of my router to get any reliable signal at all. Unfortunately, my tv setup is outside that range. By comparison, all my other devices have no problem getting a strong signal anywhere in my place. Apparently I'm not the only one and weak Wifi reception is a common complaint. Strangely enough, if I use my phone as a hotspot, my Switch can get a usable signal from that at longer ranges.

My Switch is collecting dust and I've only had it a couple of months. BOTW just isn't for me, Odyssey is probably good but I have been unable to get into it (or any other Mario game) and the rest is just indie stuff that just isn't that special.

My Wii U got much more use in it first couple of months than my Switch.

So, since this is a thread on the Switch, I figured I'd ask...

Sky Rogue, one of my favorite indie games ever, is coming to Switch. Unfortunately, as I've already put a ton of hours into and downloaded tons of mod content for the PC version, I'm not going to get it. However, it does have me wondering if there really will be anything on that piece of crap worth playing for an old F-Zero, Rogue Squadron, Wave Race, GoldenEye, 1080 fan like myself that avoids Mario and Kirby and Zelda like the fucking plague.

Just for the record, I'd never bother with taking it out of its dock. I'm not a mobile gamer, really. I'd use it docked only, strictly with the Pro Controller.

Is there anything here for a guy like me?

It's pretty good, I've started buying indie games on it because I really do enjoy playing stuff like that on the go, I think it sets a pretty good precedent, and I love how the Switch is proving to be a place for games to thrive where they otherwise would've gotten buried on Steam, and I'm salivating in the corner while I wait for Dark Souls to show up.

Honestly it's one of my favorite consoles, it just has three problems I'd like to see fixed.

#1: Better sales. Granted I am seeing a 75% off pop up here and there (for Oxenfree, which was actually a decent game, so I'm glad to see that on the best sellers list) so I guess they're hopping in that direction, but since it feels like the Switch is slowly becoming an alternative for indie games, I think better sales might help that along.

#2: Virtual console. There are so many Nintendo games I have wanted all my life to play mobile. Super Metroid being one and while that's on New 3DS, I'm only buying one of those if my 3DS craps the bed (not impossible but I'd rather not) there's plenty of other games I'd have a massive fucking nerdgasm if I ever saw, like Super Mario RPG, Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country, and everything thing else that was on that Super SNES that no one could FUCKING GET! So please Nintendo, as someone who grew up on the NES and SNES. Release those games for the Switch. (Also make your pricing a little reasonable, you've got two or three NES games on the E-Market but eight dollars is a bit much. I think five would be more reasonable, maybe eight for SNES?)

#3: Less people downplaying or denying the Switch's flaws when someone brings them up. You all know what I'm talking about, it's a lot easier to enjoy something when you don't have to deal with this.
