I've gotten a craving for some classic RPG. And I mean classic as in really old. 2-D, pixley graphics, Tolkien setting, 'find secret sword in enchanted woods' type of thing, all that.

So come now. Dig in your memory banks - what RPG did YOU think was the shit 10+ years ago?

I've said it a million times before, and I'll saying a million times again, I'm sure:
Baldur's Gate.
Just...so...awesome.
Although, Dragon Age is looking like it's approaching the same level of awesome.
I mean, BG will always be my favorite game series of all time, but Dragon Age is just so awesome.

Darksun, Ultima VI, Ultima Underworld, early final fantasy games. There are plenty of fun old-school rpgs out there. (my list barely scratches the surface)

I'm pretty old so games I thought were the shit 10 years ago are still pretty nice looking. But you want some great classic gaming? Pick up a DS with either version of Etrian Odyssey, or a game called the Dark Spire.

Dark Spire is so old school it's peers include the original wizardry.

All great games.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3. I love that game and it's installed on my laptop right now.

Nostalgia ftw.

If you think about it, 10 years ago the PS2 was about ready to launch so you really have a lot of good stuff to pick from even on the PS1. Squaresoft was going strong with FF7, Xenogears, Vagrant Story and Parasite Eve. You better not forget to play Wild Arms or Lunar: Silver Star Story either. The SNES had Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG and of course, Chrono Trigger.

Its not quite oldschool (its under current development) but if you really really like old RPGs you should be able to find enjoyment from Dwarf Fortress. http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/

Dwarf Fortress is a very complex and insanely deep game. To help learn the game you can find tutorials on the wiki http://dwarffortresswiki.net. After a few tutorials you should be resisting kobold and goblin sieges in no time.

To make the graphics a little easier to understand, I recommend the Mike Mayday graphics pack. You can find the pre integrated package at http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.php

I have to second the old Baulder's Gate, or even original Neverwinter Nights (it's getting up there in age).

If you can get Planescape: Torment that is good too, though not the setting you seem to want.

I would have to say Shining Force 3 for the Sega Saturn was a great RPG. You could go futher back to early Dragon Warrior games. I was also a big fan of the Phantasy Star I - III.

I would've said pokemon, but that really wouldn't meet the peramiters given. nor with that mario rpg. I'd say buldurs' gate, i can't think of any fantasy RPGs from the top of my head. Also, Welcome to the Escapist.

I played cops and robbers way back in the day. I would be the robber and my brother would be the cops and I would rob a store then kick his ass for trying to arrest me. Best old school RPG eva.

Wow. You whippersnappers really don't know what you missed, do you?

Pool of Radiance, Hillsfar, Curse of the Azure Bonds, and Secret of the Silver Blades all the way. Or, if you're less into Forgotten Realms and more into Dragonlance, then Champions of Krynn, Death Knights of Krynn, and Dark Queen of Krynn.

I was gonna say the same thing, those games are so awesome. And Dark Spire is like 10 bucks new at gamestop(with a CD with the sound track) and Etrain Odyssey II is 20 when I bought it.
