I've gotten a craving for some classic RPG. And I mean classic as in really old. 2-D, pixley graphics, Tolkien setting, 'find secret sword in enchanted woods' type of thing, all that.

So come now. Dig in your memory banks - what RPG did YOU think was the shit 10+ years ago?
This type of game doesn't have to be old. I'm a big fan of Eschalon: Book I [http://basiliskgames.com/eschalon-book-i] which is an indie rpg released in 2007. The sequel, Book II, comes out beginning 2010. I think it's exactly what you're looking for. It's definitely one of my favorites alongside the Ultima and Fallout series and Stonekeep.

One of my old favorites is Betrayal in Antara. It came out in 1997 for the PC.

The original Secret of Monkey Island on the Amiga. Is that old enough? We're talking the old blocky graphics too, not the updated version where it is easy to "pick up a rubber-chicken-with-a-pulley-in-the-middle because you can see it" remake. And then of course Secret of Monkey Island 2 - LeChuck's Revenge... 12 disks?! I still remember the shock of a single game needing 12 3.5" disks.

Baldurs gate. Get all of em + the expansions (prolly £5 each now) and then use BG tutu on them and play from start to finish. The music is some of the best ever

Wow. You whippersnappers really don't know what you missed, do you?

Pool of Radiance, Hillsfar, Curse of the Azure Bonds, and Secret of the Silver Blades all the way. Or, if you're less into Forgotten Realms and more into Dragonlance, then Champions of Krynn, Death Knights of Krynn, and Dark Queen of Krynn.
Aahahahah... Another old commie! Those commodore 64 goldbox games are a little older than 10 years (more like over 25 years old). I loved all of those back in the day (mid 80s), but they are just older than the original poster asked for.

But... Why not. Lets pull out all the great old Commodore 64 RPGs which I believe helped set the standard for todays western RPGs.
How about these? Ultima III & IV, Wizards Crown & Eternal Dagger, Bards Tale (I,II & III), Neuromancer(cyberpunk RPG), Elite(space trader RPG), Autoduel(car combat RPG), Wasteland (where would the Fallout series be without this grandfather of a postnuke RPG).

You want really old school RPGs? How about Tunnels of Doom on the TI99/4A or Dungeons of Daggorath on the TRS-80. Man the 80s had some great western RPGs.

Icewind Dale 1 & 2. It's pretty much the same as Baldur's Gate. The story is not as good but you get to make all six of your party members.

I have to second the old Baulder's Gate, or even original Neverwinter Nights (it's getting up there in age).

If you can get Planescape: Torment that is good too, though not the setting you seem to want.
Everything by Black Isle.

Personally, i found Planescape:Torment to be the best. Play BG 1 and 2. Both excellent, especially the second.

But Planescape: Torment took a different direction that I've never seen. I found it to be incredible.

These are truly old school (and what I would have recommended). Now, in order to not just be a ^This post:

Baldurs gate I and II, Planescape: Torment and if you want old games then I hear that Bards Tale should be good.

I'm gonna go back further than any post I've seen here. I've actually downloaded a few of these for free in recent years when I had the same nostalgia.

Bards Tale 1,2, & 3 (these were some of the best games I've ever played, you may want to skip to 3)
Wasteland (the predecessor to Fallout 1, 2 and 3, and still better than all of them even with RGB graphics. I highly recommend it)
Might and Magic 1,2 and 3 (you may want to skip to 3 if you don't like CGA graphics)
Phantasie 3 (first RPG I played on a PC and was awesome)

So many people naming 'old' games, and to me, it seems like they just came out a few years back. The Pool of Radiance type games and what not, those are what I remember having the most fun when talking about old school RPG's.

But so far, everyone has forgotten quite possibly the best one yet:

You know, there's enough people with nostalgia obsession that there are brand new games with everything you loved about the old games. Dragon Age seems to regularly meet the, "I was a BG obsessive" seal of approval, and Torchlight is pretty much refined Diablo, action RPG. There's also always Neverwinter Nights and it's mods. I don't think you have to dig into really old games, except out of sheer Nostalgia. But if you do, consider adding Arcanum and Planescape to the list, even if there not exactly typical RPG story.

Planescape will always remain high on my list, but I have a hard time going back to it for one simple reason. Your character walks too damn SLOW! Any game you can win by being extremely smart is high on my list of classic.

Lufia and the Fortress of doom for the SNES. First time I played this I accidentilly equipped a monster ring and walked from one town to the next. It remains to this day the only game I have ever maxed out the characters level (so long as the max level isn't pathetic like 20). It's sequel was good, but you know exactly what happens at the end because you play it in lufia 1.

I'm suprised nobody has said Earthbound.
