I come from Ireland, so me mocking Australia for anything would be nothing short of insanely hypocritical... Every country mocks others, and themselves, and make up stereotypes and cliches. It's fun. :)

I think Australians are awesome. However I will never EVER visit you're country. Too many things that kill people. And big spiders. I HATE Big Spiders.
OMG... someone who thinks exactly like me! You must be my twin.
I told you before. Its a giant social experiment!
Oh of course, now i remember... then that really just proves it because i didn't realise it was you and still found something else you agree upon lol ;)
Its science! Evil science!!!!

I hope the Australian universities are like presented in the Monty Python sketch. That would be great.

Platypus' have intrigued me since I was [small]this[/small] high. I liked the Australian accent too, but something ruined it a little bit.

Oh come on. I reckon some of the convict jokes can be pretty funny. For example, I know a man, and when he went through customs at an Australian airport, they asked if he had a criminal record. His response? "I didn't know it was still a requirement." Apparently, customs officers can't take a joke.

On a more serious note, I simply believe that everything in the country is trying to kill you, and would still like to visit.

I actually have no qualms against Australians. In fact, most Australians, partly because of the stereotypes, partly because of the accent, partly because I have family there, are total bad asses.

My only thing is the racism in Australia. Yes , it's there, and not toward Blacks. Its against us Indians. I can understand why, a bit. The outsourcing, taking of jobs, different culture, our really annoying accent and the ever funny head-bob, the penny-pinching etc. but really? Attack defenseless Indians?

Coincidentally, what fueled me to create this thread was in another thread about the poor Indian guy who was assaulted by a gang in Australia and was burnt alive (I don't he died, thankfully). This really is fucking terrible, and, although I'll never fully understand how a racist's mind works, I do know for sure that the assholes that did this, and the people in Australia, and indeed the world, that are racist are somewhat of a minority. There were people in the comments section saying such things as "blah blah bad Australians blah blah Kangaroos and Crocodiles", i.e I created this thread.

Yes I have a question.

Did you really think anyone had those misconceptions about Australia? Come on, we are not stupid enough to think that you ride Kangaroos and wrestle Crocodiles. I've never heard anyone say that outside of a joke.
You would be surprised actually.

I have had many students from over sea's (Japan, Germany, etc.) that were kind of disappointed there weren't kangaroos and koala bears everywhere and that believed there are drop bears that jump on your face.

Yeah, that is a good one :p I've heard it about a million times though ;)

I'm sure it's a lovely place filled with delightful people but I can't stand the accent or the rising inflection. The handful of Australians I've met live in England and bang on relentlessly about how shit England is in comparison to Australia, which is endearing. Mind you, they all work in Australian theme bars for £4 an hour.

With Sydney top of the ladder do you see them winning the grand final or will Melbourne once again emerge victorious?

I mean...I love Australia, and if you travel this world you will run into Australians. Amazes me how many I've met and it is always "been traveling for a year, figure another year and go back". Nice folks, we got along great. I guess when you grow up with stereotypes (backward, ignorant, inbred bigots) you tend to not give them much merit for others.

Now, everyone, sing the greatest national anthem ever!

Travelling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said, "Do you come from a land down under?"

I mean...Advance Australia Fair! Did I mention I love Australians having a sense of humour?

Yeah, I know, but it's that small minority that's preventing me from moving there once I'm of age. I'm tend to stay on they careful side.

What I think....Well for the island itself, I'm sorry, but the majority of the wildlife sucks ass. From what I've seen, pretty much everything there can kill you. Also, isn't there like a 10 year drought, the weather kind of blows in my opinion.

The people....haven't met too many. Can't say my opinions on them, except they do like to travel a lot.

"- Yes, our ancestors are mostly convicts. But, despite this, no, we are not all convicts, and your endless slew of jokes on this matter are really.not.that.funny."

Speaking of which, wouldn't it be hilariously ironic if Michael Atkinson was a direct descendant of a serial killer.

OT: Can't say I ever believed you all wrestled crocodiles daily. Just most of you.

Then I guess I stand corrected. I guess I just haven't meet these people.

Australians are awesome. And have one of the coolest English accents in the world, and yes, I am aware that Australians do not speak like Steve Irwin. And you have one of the best comedians in the world, Adam Hills!

It's not the people that I'm scared of, it's the continent itself. That land is cursed and it's trying to kill anyone that sets foot on it!

But, come on guys, level with me here; us Australians (most of us) are really very nice people. I'm pretty sure that the same goes for whatever country you hail from; there'll always be some assholes, and the majority will usually be great people.
No, in the U.S. Generally the majority of us are a bunch of assholes.

Oh and the time I went to Australia I thought it was great. Nice people and beautiful women who like Americans. I will definitely go back again.
