1985. That's the copyright date for most Microsoft products as well as the NES.

I am amazed that everyone ignored the most basic and important development in mankind's collective history, Agriculture.

Without farming we would have nothing else and still be hunter gatherers'.
Yes! The agricultural revolution, basically, taught humans the ideas of ownership and artificial selection. These two concepts have been very important throughout human history... although I'm not sure if you can call them achievements.

People have this weird mentality of feeling good about others' efforts. Sports teams, console wars, religion... And now, how to be proud because you were born a human being (as if you could ever be born anything else!)

From the top of my head: Scientific method, cooking, alphabet, meditation, fiction, music, the Internet...

EDIT: I can't see how fire can bee "our" achievement, it's like saying surviving the dinosaur extinction has been "our" achievement: fire was discovered by Homo Erectus... Campfires dating 1.5 million years have been found in Africa.

Me. (OH SNAP!)

In all truthfulness, there's so much we've achieved that narrowing such a thing down to a single greatest one would be tough. However, I will say that the discovery of rhythm lead to a plethora of other findings and ideas that eventually lead to more even achievements. So I'd say that!

I think fire falls into the same category as electricity, in that we harnessed it. So our achievement was harnessing it.

Flight. I don't mean flight like birds, but the fact that a species that has been land and sea bound for centuries... millennia even! has been able to find a way to soar through the skies, well, awesome.

It's a tie between antibiotics and sanitation standards, they significantly increase life expectancy and are so engrained in some cultures we don't even think about it.

figuring out how sex works.
Eh, practically every single species on Earth has figured out how that works. Without reproduction, asexual or otherwise, they wouldn't be here in the first place.
Personally, I think that advances in science, particularly medicine, is our best achievement. The fact that we're able to break down and understand the world around us never ceases to amaze me.

Surviving our own perpetual stupidity. Hey, we're asking for it! We're the only species on this planet with the power of wiping out all life.

The nuke, by virtue of the fact that we have hundreds of them and could destroy the world multiple times over, but have failed to do so.

Laws and morals, both religious and political laws. With these we were able to move past being pure savages who did whatever we want without consequence and acted off of base instinct just like any other animal out there. And can't forget science and philosophy which helped us understand the world we live in. These things is helped us prove that we are the dominant creation. I also think religion is a great achievement, Gods message and teachings may be from him, but every religion developed from an interpretation of his will and not his exact words; no one can claim that their religion teaches the true word of God, not even the 3 Monotheistic religions (Christians cant claim this, Jews cant claim this, and myself and my fellow Muslims cant claim this either even though all of us still do). And for any Atheists who want to bad mouth me on this, keep your comments to yourself.
It's nice to see someone who actually sticks up for religion on the internet, for some reason you're in short supply it seems. I think I would definently put religion in our Greatest Achievments list because imagine the world before religion. What happens is society is ruled by the man with the biggest weapon, and anyone who disagrees with him can just get a bigger weapon and take over. Because of this no real morals or laws can be established. Then some bright spark either gets a message from god or invents the idea (depending on your point of view) and tells everyone that there is a big guy up there who you have to obey because you can't beat him in a fight. This allows the basis for laws to be created. Think about early civilisations, almost all of their rulers claim to be, in some way, divine. This is because the gods are the one people you can't fuck with. These early religious rulers set the basis for modern civilisation, laws and morals. Now, I'm atheist but that doesn't mean I can't recognise the value of religion.

The International Space Station. We built a habitat for humans that hangs in empty space 200 miles above our heads and does not fall. Hands down it is our greatest achievement. Remember we may have discovered fire, electricity, physics, thermodynamics, and the rest; but those are not achievements. An achievement is an accomplishment. We built it with our cunning, our determination, and our hard labor. It can be seen everyday from virtually every country in the world especially those nations that have banded together to help construct it. It is an icon of our progress as a species. It represents cooperation, unity, understanding, and forward thinking. It will not last forever, but the day it comes down, you can be certain that those of us who seek to unify humanity, to free them from the shackles of ignorance and oppression, will be waiting to build an even bigger and better one in its place.

Id say our greatest achievement was standing upright, clothing ourselves, and becoming the dominant life form in the galaxy (in that order).

Democracy and bacon, that is all.
we gotta give pigs most of the credit for bacon!

Isn't "in the galaxy" a bit conceited?
