My question is this, why do people use nicknames? I've used roughly 4 in my lifetime, but recently they have been growing in their own way. What's your nickname, for Games, and the Internet? Do you use it as an Alias, or do you just have it because everyone else does? Do you hide behind it or don't care about people knowing who you really are? It's an interesting thought, sorry if this is too private for anyone, but I want others opinions on this, my crazy thoughts...

I personally think that it's more about trying to be unique in identifying who you are. If everyone went by their name there'd be a whole lot of confusion if two (or more) people had the same name. Plus it's nice to log on and say "This is Madnezz."

For your second question, I do use this username for online things and the like, but if Madnezz is taken, I use my old one which is Frozzty, and if that is taken, I make a variation of it like Frozz, Froz, Fr0zz and so on.

Third, a little of both really. As stated before, it's awesome to log on and say "This is Madnezz" but I think it'd be a little boring if people had all these cool names and I walked around with the name Jonny.

Lastly, I do keep some things private, but I'll tell people some stuff if they ask, although I won't recite a whole life story.

Ah, Spartans. Anyways, It's interesting how many people have stories behind their names, I actually find most of them quite interesting, though, yeah, it can be annoying if it is a life story, I agree.

Na my name is Patrick, so my gamer tag is Patricks Law and my escapist name is Patrick_and_the_ricks so no I think fake names are stupid I don't give out to much info so simply stating my name is Patrick doesn't make me feel scared.

The name "Duck Sandwich" came from an in-joke between my friends.

Before that, I had been using "Tallgeese59" which came from the name of one of the Gundams (giant robots) in Gundam Wing. The 59 comes from my birthday.

The day I decided to stop haunting the forums and actually join I had been watching chop-sockey flicks all day...so, Kung Fu Master, mostly just to be a departure from all the other nicknames that have fallen on me over the years, such as...

Octavius and the penguin I made up, the rest were all given to me.

My friends actually gave me the name last year because they noticed that my favorite song is The Jester Race, so one day they just started calling me Jester Lord and it stuck. and thats all i can think of right now a friend has the rest on file. Why do i use nicknames... i really don't know i guess i find them more interesting than my real name.

I got called 'Cypher' by friends when I was in highschool, because I was often cryptic or hard to work out (cypher being a variation of cipher, meaning a code)
This was YEARS before the Matrix... I'd also like to point out... back when it was an almost rare nickname.

After the film came out, every noob and their dog decided to start using it online, so I had to pick a variation, and the first time I really went with something new, was when I was picking a character name for a stealth-based character for Planetside... so "shadow" seemed apt and ive been using variations of that ever since!

my nickname obviously is Fox, i dont hide behind it because thats what friend i hang out with call me too, they call me that cause i have a tatoo of a fox on my shoulder, plus foxes are my favorie animals. but to prove i dont hide behind it, ill tell you my real name, its Stephanie Marie i go by the full name so ppl got lazy and that why they gave me the nickname

For me the alias is dependent on the situation. For an email account for example I will use my first initial and my last name. I do not want to have an email account on my resume that says [email protected], it would be embarrassing. Fightgarr is the alias I use for literally every gaming related thing. If Fightgarr is unavailable F1ghtgarr usually is so I use that. Its an interesting question as to why we use an alias in gaming. Generally its because its more reflective of our personality and therefore our playstyle than, say, Steve. Its also a lot more likely playing online, that you'll have people with the same or similar name to you, its a lot less likely to find someone with the same or similar alias.

Well, I go by two names pretty much everywhere I go online, one's the one you see before you, the other's Dimebagdan, you can probably guess how I got the second one and I mean DimebagDARRELL, the guitarist, for all you americans. ( seriously I used to get chucked off Battlefield 1942 because they thought that the name was a drug reference, which in a way I suppose it is, but not purposefully )

I have the nickname Macey. Because someone spelt my last name wrong when they entered me into a competition and I won.

I use floppylobster because Floppy was my dog that I loved very much when I was 15. And floppylobster is what my girlfriend at the time called her. Both are now gone.

I almost got scammed by someone who said that I needed to do 3 things:
1) Make an account called Revolverwolf,
2) Give all my items to him,
3) Then get all my items back later.

I'm sure you can guess where I caught on.
But hell. Revolverwolf is a cool name.

A few people shorten it to Wolfy though... Cute when girls say it. A bit strange when a guy says it...

Lykopis is a nickname I got somewhere in my Ancient/Medival history class, I'm female, my last name is wolf, hey let's call me the greek word for she-wolf. It works. I much much prefer going by my first name... As soon as I've assessed wether someone trying to talk to me is bat-sh*t crazy or not, I ask them to call me by my name, or ignore them to death.
