Jedi Academy is objectively the best Star Wars game ever made. I like this list otherwise.
Sometimes I really wish that Total Biscuit hadn't taught the internet to use "objectively" as an intensifier.
Sometimes I wish pretentiousness wasn't such a terrible, debilitating disease.
I know, right? Who says that art is objectively good based on their own operational definition of quality? As if their theory of what makes a game good is the only valid one?
That's sort of like . . .the uh . . cough . . . joke. I guess you're a lot of fun to be around . . .
Anywho, take care.
Really? Ah, I thought you could have been referring to either of us.

I never got the apeal of Republic Commando. Maybe it's because I played it off the back of Hidden and Dangerous and the Red Storm games but it seemed a pretty generic shooter to me with a shallow tacked on squad component. Plus it had the taint of the prequels.

Seriousl... How can Jedi Academy not be on this list? I mean you have Racer on this but not Jedi Academy (other wise knwon as the Limb amputation simulator')

Nope sorry this list is bogus.
They made it clear that it was their personal top 10 star wars games, the fact that Steve has a different opinion than you or I does not make it bogus or invalid.

I also put JK and X-Wing series in my personal top 10 but I get where your coming from Steve. Also tip of the hat for including Star Wars: Racer and the Naboo flying game. They were quite fun back in the day, need to grab another copy.

Also I have Rogue Squadron 3D on PC :p

1. Whaaaaat, nothing from the X-Wing series?
2. Whaaaaat, no JK?
3. Whaaaaat, Battlefront 2 instead of the far superior Battlefront?
4. Republic Commando rocks.

I'm guessing since this is supposed to be a nostalgia list it makes sense The Force Unleashed doesn't get a spot, it's not old enough.

It's a shame, those games were brilliant, especially the first. Those games get far far more hate than they deserve. I finally felt like Force Users were treated like the near unstoppable badasses that all of Star Wars implies they could be but never actually allowed them to be. Jedi Knight doesn't even come close to pulling that off as well as this series does. The hectic combat along with the fluidity of the controls allowed for the player to create their own awesome moments pretty easily, and the story is quite a good piece of work as well chock full of references and fan moments.

The gamyboy stars wars game is identical to the NES game of the same name that came out at the same time.
You're kidding! Now I'm kinda tempted to pick up the NES game and make a review of it. Thanks for the info. I'll update the article accordingly.
Here a video of the game play, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1rn34nOViM as you can see it's the same except in colour. From my experience the NES version is a little easier to play because it's easier to see what is going on.

"Empire Strikes Back" was the winner of the SNES trilogy!

I'd also love to see a refreshed version of both Rogue Squadron and Pod Racer.

I'm also pretty surprised to see the lack of Jedi Knight 2 Outcast, and after reading the comments Im surprised to see Stew's never played it (yet)! I remember when it came out, it was insane fun online (or at least it was till you started getting players using macros to nail some of the combos).

I always liked star wars:bounty hunter on ps2. It appears that one's not so popular.
Yeah, I remember liking that. I'd have to play it again before including it on this sort of list, I can't remember if it was a "genuinely good game" or a "good considering" kind of game.

There are so many Star Wars games with confusing titles that the best way to add to this list is probably with images. Thus my inclusions would be.

(While this isn't actually a Star Wars game, it was released in the same year as Return of the Jedi and was certainly treated as such by the 5 year-old me...)

I'd really enjoy Empire at War if not for two features. Being unable to set commands when time was paused, and the fucking bullshit super easy to upgrade space stations which later upgrades took unreasonably large fleets of extremely high end battleships to even scratch, and constantly fucking spawned battlecruisers which spawned fighters, which was just plain bullshit.
I hated how, when as the Empire, a swarm of X-Wings could obliterate a full sized Star Destroyer. But when I tried that tactic as a Rebel, I got cut to pieces. Still, it was worth it to see the Death Star blow up planets.
Y-Wings, not X-Wings.

If you can manage the skirmish lines properly, the space game gets horrifyingly lethal, fast. Fighters (X-Wings, A-Wings, TIE Fighters, TIE interceptors) are your counter to enemy bombers (Y-Wings, TIE Bombers, B-Wings).

Capital ships get used against fighters (Star Destroyers, Corvettes, Mon Cal Star Cruisers, ect). But, you need a fighter escort to protect them from bombers, and you need bombers to take out your opponent's capital ships.

There are a few major exceptions, like the missile gunboat, which work like long range artillery, and you can use them in place of your bombers, if you want. (IIRC, all of the factions have a legitimate, all capital ship build for dealing with enemies.)

You can also use fighters to pick off your opponent's picket lines, and there's a hierarchy between the fighters.

With a little careful play, a single Imperial Class Star Destroyer, or Star Cruiser, with 4 flights of X-Wings and 2 flights of Y-Wings can snuff a level 5 station pretty easily.

The only really nasty thing is that the Imperials get (most of) their TIEs as garrison units, meaning when they get destroyed, they don't represent a real loss for that player, while Rebel fighters are never garrison units, so every loss has to be manually replaced.

I do like that all three factions actually play differently, though. Rebels do better with hit and run tactics... which is really weird for an RTS. You want to get in, cripple a few ships, and book it, before bringing a new force in later to finish them off. Imperial have a strong incentive for heavy commitment. You hit a system with Star Destroyers or AT-ATs, and roll over any opposition. Consortium works around finding weak spots, and exploiting them, undermining your foes before you finally move in and attack (as I recall, it's been awhile since I've actually played as them), they also have a very different board to deal with, because they have a ton of units that require you to have a specific planet under your control, while the Rebels and Imperials rarely need one specific planet for anything.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with some of the author's picks. Episode I racer is a shameful turd, both as a racing game and a Star Wars game. Truth be told, I'm rather baffled that so many N64 titles made the cut, as I would point to these titles as examples of crap Star Wars games (the only one I sort-of liked was Shadows of the Empire, and even that had its shortcomings).

Republic Commando, while not necessarily bad, wasn't particularly great either. I know that I played it back in the day, but it did not leave a lasting impression in my memory at all (which is to say I remember next to nothing about it). How such a decidedly mediocre title made the list has me scratching my head - especially when you consider other PC Star Wars games far more deserving of a mention (X-Wing, TIE Fighter, any of the Jedi Knight games, hell even Rebel Assault).

As for the KOTOR vs KOTOR 2 argument...I'd say that KOTOR 2 had serious problems when it was released (which is par for the course for an Obsidian game). I did enjoy it more than KOTOR, but was seriously disappointed by the ending. The Restored Content Mod did go a long way in fixing a lot of the game's issues, though. But on release day, KOTOR 2 was basically an incomplete game, which is why I have no problem with the author picking the first title over the second.

No Dark Forces or Dark Forces II. Thats a real shame. One of the best shooters ever made when Star Wars was still grim and awesome.

Man, Shadows of the Empire knocked my socks off as a kid. I loved it so back then.
I still own a working copy, I just hope to find a new N64 before my current one dies.
