Like a lot of people, I have to say Bioshock and for the same reasons.
In addition, Demon's Souls. I knew what it was going to be like going in, and I guess I'm just not hardcore enough, but I also think it has a lot of bad design elements. After I get done with work I don't really want to bang my head against the wall replaying the same level 20 or 30 times to try to kill a boss whose patterns i can only learn through trial and error. Hey, I'm cool with just fighting that boss 50 times in a row, but why the whole level?
I'm sure it's very satisfying to complete the game, but I want to actually have fun in the process. I'm also fine with hard games, but I don't see the point in having game mechanics like this in 2011. Why make me keep replaying the whole level? Sure, games like Mario do it, but Mario is different because the levels aren't as long and because you could, in theory, get through most of the levels in a few tries. Mario doesn't have so much trial and error. It's much more about having good reflexes. Demon's Souls has a lot of trial and error. Yes, it's also very much about reflexes, but there's stuff in the game that's going to kill you no matter what the first time you face it...and when it does you have to replay the whole level to try again. In my opinion, that's bad game design. If you have good gear maybe this isn't true--but you'd only get good gear by a horrific amount of trial and error and exploration or by looking up where to find it on the internet. And if you have to use a walkthrough to make a game fun, that means it's a crappy game. That leads me to my next point, and I think this is pretty hard to argue with...
The entire game is completely obtuse about telling you anything. It's harder than it needs to to tell whether one weapon is better than another, what the stat modifiers do, or where to get more weapons and armor. Why make me memorize all these little symbols on the inventory screen? You can't just write "adds + 10 to strength?" There are probably 20 year old games with a better, more intuitive interface. Diablo 1 is like 15 years old and is 100 times better. Same thing goes for world tendency--what person would actually figure this out on their own? There's way too much hiding the ball in Demon's Souls. The game would be nearly impossible to play without using the internet for help.
Oh yeah, not to mention the inability to pause. It's not immersive. It's just stupid.
Luckily I got it from a guy on craigslist for like $7.
