Touhou Project (yes, all that comes from games). I can kinda see how they can be fun, but the overlying gameplay (and the universe surrounding it, but that's another story) just wasn't my cup of Kool-Aid.

Grand. Theft. Auto. 4.

After playing and loving the previous-gen GTAs, having a blast with Saints Row 1 and 2, and seeing all the hype (Euphoria! Award winning script! 100 million dollar budget!) I was fully expecting to be blown away.

What I got was "cahzin! let's go bowling!" "let's go out drinking cahzin!"

Needless to say, I'm not too excited about GTA5 at the moment.

Red Dead Redemption. Too much travel time to get to quests, and when you get there and complete them, it never feels like you're ever accomplishing anything.

And you've totally disregarded the fact that the overworld got a massive upgrade.
I admit that the environments were a vast improvement and I like the overall look of the game.

don't know what your on about there, i didn't play the game any differently than i'd played previous.
When leveling up, rather than receiving a predetermined number of experience points from a certain Pokemon at a given level (i.e. Lvl. 45 Golbat = 1015 EXP), the experience points you gain is determined by your Pokemon's level and the opposing Pokemon's level (Lvl. 10 Snivy gains 15 EXP against Lvl. 5 Lillipup while Lvl. 5 Patrat gains 60 EXP against the same Lillipup). I believe this was done to prevent starters from reaching high levels quickly (i.e. new players having high level starters and no other Pokemon.

thats your opinion. I don't see how they were any more forgettable than last generations. I can remember my starting pokemon, the legendaries and a handful of random ones from both.
Well, for me, the starters determine the mood of the game because, like it or not, you're stuck with the starter for a majority of the game. All other starters before this game were great, especially the fire-types. When Tepig was announced as a starter, I laughed it off, thinking it was a joke. When I played the game, I couldn't believe it. A fire-type version of Spoink, THAT'S what the fans wanted. It was one of the only games where I did not choose the fire starter (the other being Pokemon Yellow). A lot of Pokemon down the line did not show too much promise.

ung... I just stopped reading after the first two sentences.

Listen people, there are certain factors inherent to gaming that can be determined with a basic understanding of the development process, as well as looking at previous entries into a franchise. From those things, it's quite easy to conclude whether or not a game will be better than another. PARTICULARLY when the game the unreleased game's being compared to is so horrible.
Quite frankly, I'm getting really tired of people worshiping Skyrim like it's the second coming of Christ, and proclaiming it game of the year when it isn't even out yet. I hated Oblivion... it was boring, and it was just something I couldn't get into at all. But I'm not going to run around like some smarmy jerk with a superiority complex, telling people that it "doesn't deserve to be uttered in the same breath" as other games I love. There isn't a universal law saying that everyone has to like what you do. And just because you don't like it, that doesn't make the game "horrible".
I've repeatedly had this argument (and won) with probably 20 people, so I'm not going to go through every thing again.

but it's not about Skyrim. Pick any game (which, you know, I mentioned... several of them) and they're all superior to Deus Ex. It's not about FUN, it's not about what's anticipated the most, GOTY should be based on the MERITS of the game (fun being a minor factor among several other things). There are so many games that completely outshine (and will completely outshine) Deus Ex based on the merits alone that it doesn't deserve much recognition.

Again, I had FUN with Deus Ex. I can see why people like it so much. But you have to have some thick, rose shaded glasses if you honestly think it's GOTY worthy.
There is no need telling me how many people you've "won" an argument against. That doesn't impress me in the slightest.

I don't care whether you think the game is worthy of game of the year or not. My problem is that you are telling people what games they can and can't compare to each other, going as far as saying that they should not utter them in the same breath as games you like. Especially when you're praising a game you haven't even played yet.

EDIT: Oh and I never said Deus Ex deserved game of the year.

Mario 64 - Yes I am sure I will get a lot of stick for this but I found this game unplayable on release and after trying it again last year I still cant play it I even found it worse than sunshine and yet loads of people rave about it cannot understand it at all give me super Mario bros, super Mario 3 or Mario galaxy anyday (not Mario galaxy 2 though that game just puts me in a bad mood whenever I play it dont know why the level design is still impeccable but it just isnt much fun).
When I got my N64 many many years ago, Mario 64 was one of the game that came with it. As a young'un, I struggled to understand the whole "6 Stars per world" thing and got stuck very early into the game.

Then when I finally got the hang of it after playing a pre-existing file (Was a pre-owned copy) I got to 99 stars, and got stuck. See, you have to catch a rabbit in the basement twice, once before 50 stars and once after. Because I didnt get it before, I was gimped out of 100 stars and had to do the whole thing all over again.

Aside from that, it was brilliant. Would love to hear what specifically made you not like it.
The trouble is I am not entirely sure why I didnt like it I am also unsure why I dislike Mario Galaxy 2 (despite absolutely loving the first one) but I will try and justify myself.

I found the controls imprecise when compared to the SNES/NES mario games and I did not like the graphics when it came out not that these were bad but it just didnt feel like it had the robustness of a mario game (not counting horrible spinoffs here). I also did not enjoy the level design it just felt too open and empty for my liking whereas before it felt like there was a secret waiting to be found around every corner and inside every block and lastly as a minor gripe which is not just for this game but particularly affected it was the camera most of the time it would be ok but it always seemed to pick a rubbish viewing angle at the worst possible time and judging distance for jumps was quite difficult at times.

Now you could (quite rightly) say that I did not give it enough chance but I just could not bring myself to keep playing, it felt a chore and just made me wish for a return to 2D which continued until Mario Galaxy came along and completely blew me away with it awesomeness. To be fair I cant honestly call Mario 64 a bad game but I did feel it was overhyped and I just didnt `get` it at all

Team Fortress 2/Orange box on the 360, not the same as on PC

I was about to virtually slap you, but then I read the rest of what you said and saw that you're a good person.
It Definitely is not the same on a 360!
LOL Ya, I wanted to make myself clear when I typed this up, cuz I knew it could be taken the wrong way if not read carefully :p

Metal Gear Solid 2.

I tried to get into the series by playing "The best game in the series" (This was before MGS4). Maybe I was expecting a different type of game (A stealth game like Splinter Cell or Hitman), maybe the controls were too different from anything I was used to. I don't know exactly what was wrong, but I know that if I'm not going to enjoy the best in the series, I probably won't like the rest of it.
Dude, MGS2 is universally regarded as the WORST in the series. Play MGS3: Sustenance (the edition with the over-the-shoulder camera), I considered it the greatest game I've ever played.

Borderlands - Ergh, just did nothing for me.
Alice: Madness Returns - I should've loved that game but just couldnt like it.
Uncharted 2 - Really loved the graphics and story but it did grate on me at about 5 hours in.

God of War 2. One was okay, but I didn't see the huge praise behind it and 2 was just filled with needless puzzles that just padded out the game time. Three was more fun than the first two though even though it was a bit stupid when it came to its plot.

Bioshock I'd also say. It wasn't bad and I don't hate it, it's just okay at best. Not bad but nothing deserving of legendary status.

Starcraft. I tried... really tried to get into it. The game isn't bad, of course, I just never found the appeal it's supposed to have.

Spore - ugh. After a few hours I just shruged and deleted the bloody thing. Waste of time.

Minecraft. Played around for about an hour and half, then walked away and never looked back. Guess I'm not that creative or something, but there was just nothing to make me want to continue playing.

Killzone 1 and 2, Call of Duty Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2, and Fallout 3. The last one especially because I should like it. I like Bethesda, their games, and the setting. But I just became unbelievably bored.

Portal. Before you flame me, let me say that I fucking loved portal. I just didn't find it very funny. Except the ending. But it was just delightfully creepy and suspensful all the way through. And I enjoyd the puzzles and the song at the end a lot. So not funny, but still in my top 20. Portal 2 was funny as hell though.

The halo series. I enjoyd it but it was barely good, not enywhere near fps's like half life.

Dead island. It wasn't exxactly hyped but it was just so bad it doesn't deserve the positive reviews.

Minecraft. I'm not even afraid to say it. yeah, it's fun for awhile, but if you don't intend to build anything and play it as a sort of survival game it gets old fast. To be frank it feels like a building tool rather than a game. A very good building tool, but still.

I'm glad to see many share this view: Bioshock. First few hours were good, but after that it just DRAGGED. I didn't get to know much about Atlus or other characters and that one 'event' regarding a 'submarine/boat' that involves Atlus WAS THE MOST POOR ATTEMPT AT EMOTIONALLY ENGAGING ME I MAY HAVE EVER SEEN. HOLY SHIT. Character development, 2K. Look it up.
Combat got repetitive and was kind of amateur. and the repetitive fetch quests and generic objectives were, well, repetitive and generic.

As much as I liked Oblivion, the leveling system CAN GO F*** ITSELF.

Deus Ex: HR is good so far but I'm not sure it's game of the century. The Original failed to impress me either.

I'm a fan of Resistance 2 and 3, so imagine my dismay when I booted up the first one and found out is was a stack of piss waffles. And yet everyone calls it an original shooter with timeless gameplay that is very polished. Please, don't make me laugh.
