Cool stuff
It would be theoretically possible to develop a one-man drift system if it had part of a Kaiju's brain to act as an enhancer. Such a concept would eliminate the need for carefully-screened pilot groupings. Of course, it might also run wild with a mind of its own...
If they did that it would be A) dumb as hell and B) hilariously awesome.
I'm not sure it can be both of those at once. Other things might pull that off, but this has to be one of the other, and I say the other, personally.
Oh it's quite easy. It's like watching a slasher movie, but when you yell at the idiot who decided the check the basement alone he pulls out a death ray and blasts everything.
But that's breaking a tired old trope, which is intrinsically good. I can't see how that's dumb. That's awesome, to me.

Because it still started with a horribly stupid idea.

Ehh...I feel this is becoming a po-tay-to/po-tah-to sort of moment. Let's call the whole thing off.

Screw the sequel, it's the Animated Series I'm interested in hearing about. The film was practically made to be in animation. So long as they don't turn it into an anime and keep a unique visual flair, I am really interested in where they could take a television series.
honestly... i kinda hope it does turn into an anime, at least we would know that it would be good, as i wouldn't trust any western studio to work on the show. western animation houses aren't used to creating shows that aren't episodic, and with characters and story to get invested in. usually in western cartoons, each episode is self contained and with no character development of any kind. though i do hope they keep to the film's visual flare as well. the last cartoon that i watched that was actually worth getting invested in was Avatar: The Last Air Bender, and they haven't been doing too good with the sequel series The Legend of Korra from what i have been hearing around the net.
Don't make me pull out the list of shows that I know of that not only manage to have both episodic episodes and character development, and do overarching plots. Adventure Time immediately springs to mind. The idea that western animation is nothing but one offs where nothing is achieved is a fallacy as ignorant as declaring all anime to be nothing but cheaply produced shonen crap.

You don't have to be anime to be considered serious.

I think this is cool.
I liked the first one, big robots fighting big monsters, it's good to get some of that ones in a while :D
Animated series sounds cool except I doubt we'll be airing it were I'm from :,(

I thought it was just going to be a release date for Pacific Rim 2.
We got that, an animated series, and a continuation of the comic.
Holy f**k, that is ten times better than what I expected.

I am extremely happy for all developments. I wonder if we might get a halfway decent video game adaptation out of this time.

I hope video games never get to this point. I don't care if your movie has an exact release date or not if it's two years away. Not that it's harmful to us consumers, but I can't imagine having a strict release date two years in advance can do much good for the production of the film. Can't say I'm not happy about getting a Pacific Rim sequel, but really apart from being a sure thing, I don't think the exact release date is really news to get excited about.
One of the biggest problems for AAA development studios is their complete inability to work to a budget and to a deadline. This is not because they are being all artistic and need time to get their creativity on. It is because they are terrible at estimating costs in both time and money. This leads to unfocused development, wasted resources, and missing key design elements as features are cut deep into the development process. It also leads to unreasonable workloads and stress for the game developers as they have to work day and night trying to catch up to an impossible time table. Frankly, when a movie studio behaves like a typical game studio it is a sure indicator that the film they are working on is going to be a disaster.

Games would really benefit from a well structured and planned development cycle. And that includes a target release date years in advance.

Lol, what? Just last month it was "Del Toro is working on a script... but without approval from the studio." And suddenly we have a release date for a sequel?

I'm not complaining, not at all, but fuck; that was fast.

Yeah, I'm kinda cynical about the release date given Del Toro's notoriously scatter-shot filmmaking career.

Even so, PACIFIC RIM 2 HELL YEAH!!

Yes! Yes! YEEES!
I do hope that animated series is a prequel, which tells about not only past adventures of humans/jaeger that were shown in the movie, but also those, that were mentioned briefly (Diablo Intercept... 'Nuff said).

But I do wonder about actual sequel and it's plot. Somehow war between nations seem to be most logical one.

2017?! I can't wait that long!

Oh wait, I can... (Huh... Déjà vu...)

Anyway, I wonder if the animated series would play out like a double prequel, as in a prequel to the first movie (in the form of prominent/badass flashbacks) as well as a prequel to Pacific Rim 2 (as a way to set up "possible" future events in the movie), all in which plays out like it's its own stand-alone series that anyone can watch... like how Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D kind of did it...

Regardless, this animated series might just be the thing that will keep the Pacific Rim interest alive and kicking... and quite possibly make a few people want to re-watch the first movie again, despite not actually liking it the first time...

The first movie really lost its shine on second viewing - if you take away the fights, it really is a boring movie. No idea what they could do for a sequel, they already had flying and swimming monsters. Guess they could take the fight to space or the alien world though they blew that up. They could go all Cthulhu in it? Crazy over the top monster designs? Guess we will find out in the next few years.....god i will be 40 by then. :-(

Nope. Just plain awesome. Barring a few details this is basically like the Evas in Evangelion, and I'm sure Del Toro will be drawing even more inspiration from it for the next movie.* I say bring it on! I'm happy the sequel's been confirmed. Pacific Rim was a refreshing, pleasant surprise.

*Could you imagine a Jaeger going into a beast mode berserker rage?

Dear lord. A sequel? Pacific Rim was a horrible movie. It was so cheesy I turned it off after 30 minutes. The over the top music, the terrible acting... everything was screaming "this is one epic and tough mfckin movie!!", but it was just beyond stupid. Too bad really.. I had quite some expectations, as I'm a fan of Del Toro in general.

Yes. Fucking yes. There is justice, after all. Now hopefully the U.S. theater-going public will get with the program this time. (Seriously, U.S. theater-going public, you're at least partly to blame for the existence of four incredibly shitty Transformers movies at this point. If you must go see silly robot movies, at least go see the ones that've had some effort put into them.)

And I'm especially glad it's not a prequel--there has never been a good reason for those to exist, as far as I can tell.

well alright then. Hopefully we get all the old guys back because I did like the cast, especially the chemistry between Kikuchi and Hunnam. At the very least I want more Jaegers to be used because in the last film the only one that got screen time besides the Gypsy was the Striker Eureka and even that was minimal.

While watching the new Godzilla all I could think of was "I'd rather be watching Pacific Rim". Glad they're making a new one. The first was a bit shaky in places but good over all.

I love how Pacific Rim seems to have divided all of the escapist/geek community.

There are giant monsters, there are giant robots, and they will beat the hell out of each other.

This is our popcorn movie. It's what Bay wanted to do with Transformers, and many other Summer blockbuster films have attempted to do, usually while trampling over our favorite childhood IP's and dashing our hopes to hell.

If you ask me it's simple, it's entertaining, it's original (while still filled with nods to TONS of genre's and themes that I love) and at the end of the ride I'm happy.

It makes me sad how so many of the folks with similar tastes to me are so jaded and cynical that they can't just sit back and appreciate this for what it is rather than what they think it should be.

I can't wait to hear more about the Pacific Rim world.
