Does the universe really have any where else to go, I suppose there could be more aliens but surely they'd have to start opening rifts up else where now, the film would be better as a-

I am of two minds...

"Yay, more Pacific Rim!"

but,

"Hollywood, let the man making a freaking Cthulhu movie!!!!!"
The Cthulhu movie would cost more than $200 million and would have to be R-rated. In order to make a profit, it would need to pull in $600 million to $700 million worldwide.

Look at the list of R-rated movies:

What studio would be willing to spend that much money when only a handful of R-rated movies have ever made enough to cover a production budget that large?

But it creates the question "why didn't they do that in the first place?" It was established that these beings have been aware of Earth alone for millions of years, and they probably have been doing this for billions. They only just now made their portal that selective? I wouldn't buy it. It'd just stick out at me as "because the plot demands it".
I am personally hoping for basically the introduction of the Protoss. They kept their invasion small as its just scrounging for resources to fund their war against their ancient enemy, now they step up the invasion but they also pull in the other race(or a collation) who now notice humanity for surviving. Now you have a reason to have a lot more kiju and to have new battle robots of a different alien style, as well as a set up for a much bigger universe and series. Does not seem likely though.

I am curious to see how the sequel will play out after they tied up the loose ends of the first movie. Great to see more of Pacific Rim down the road. =D

As for those who are wondering how they're gonna bring back Hannibal Chow for the second one, you need stay through the end credits of the first movie. It's only until I saw them on HBO did I learn the truth.

I hope video games never get to this point. I don't care if your movie has an exact release date or not if it's two years away. Not that it's harmful to us consumers, but I can't imagine having a strict release date two years in advance can do much good for the production of the film. Can't say I'm not happy about getting a Pacific Rim sequel, but really apart from being a sure thing, I don't think the exact release date is really news to get excited about.
It's already happened: Bioshock Infinite was announced two years prior to its originally intended release date. It was just as dumb then.

OT: Shall wait and see. The first was a good time, but I wonder how a sequel will fare.

Good. I quite enjoyed the first one!

I hope we get a more international focus, though. The heroes of the first were interesting, but I was a little disappointed the
other Jaeger teams were barely introduced before getting creamed.
