This may be kind of a silly question, but have you tried asking her why she sold them, and then maybe see her side of the story? Also, saying she sold your memories is a little overkill. You still have memories of the old games, its not like you suddenly forget everything.

It's never happened to me, but I swear to God that I would run away from home if my mom did that. Not because of what she sold, but the fact that she sold something of mine without consulting me about it. The answer would be "no, I refuse to sell my game console", anyway. Morally, it's a terrible thing to do. While she may be my parent, that is, pardon the language, a dick move. A really bad one. While it's not legally considered such, it's pretty much the same thing as stealing something then pawning it of for quick cash.

The fact of the matter is that she took your belongings without your permission and sold them. She stole from you items which are very important to you and is making you go to hell and back to reacquire them. You can't have her arrested for it, but it was a terrible thing for her to do. If she didn't know that they were important, I would advise making it very, very evident that they are important. I also suggest that you track down the guy whom she sold them to, apologize to them and explain that it was a mistake, and make your mom buy them back.

Even if they are, they should discuss it with you first to see if you have a better idea to raise money for food & heat.
I think your missing the fact there PS2 games
Too young to be colecter items too old to be worth anything
I have about 20 ps2 games id be lucky to get $30 for all of them.
if anything it was to clear up shelve space

OT:My parrent never sold my games but most went missing when we moved.

About the whole "she has a right to do so" is kinda weird for me.

just because there is a for rule it doesn't make you right, it just makes you wrong with authority. be cause seriously you wouldn't sell something you gave away, if you feel you have the right to do that you never really gave it away.

anyway, since we don't have much to go on from the info given, I would just think she didn't really know what it was, at least not to you, for her the console and the games could just be like a box of old children's toys, taking up space, and if you could make a little money of it why not? unless she was all like "Well I don't care, and the money is mine you can't have it, now go clean your room" then it's a different story but all this is speculation :)

Parents who disrespect their children by making decisions for them without asking their opinion first, and know their children so little as to not know what things each child cares about, are bad parents. Simple as that.

And I say that as a parent.
Thank you. So much.

My folks would NEVER do that to me when I was growing up, but I think it was because gaming kept me quiet and out of the way, now that I think about it they hardly ever tried to stop me from playing video games, even when grounding me. The theft of one's prized games is up there on my "This will get you on my hit list" list. XP Thanks for showing not all parents are lunatics.

Really? my local stores won't take anything that isn't current gen.

On topic though, i haven't had video games sold without knowing but i have had comics thrown away when i was in school back in 1995ish.

it was the UK Sonic the Comic (fleetway) i had been collecting since issue one. I hadn't cleaned my room for months and my dad warned me that if i didn't clean my room he would and he wouldn't care what was on the floor, it would go. came home had a nice clean room but my neat stack of comics had be bagged up and taken to the local skips. years worth of pocket money gone in an afternoon.

No, my parents haven't done that to me. When I go to college, though, I fully intend to pack up what games/consoles I can take with me a bring them along, and what games aren't allowed will be put under lock and key. Actually, I'm not worried about my parents selling off my stuff. It's my sisters who I would be concerned about, since both of them like telling me how immoral I'm being by playing games with potential brief, non-explicit sex scenes in them. I wouldn't put it past them to take them and throw them in the garbage in order to "save" me from the bad stuff or whatever.

Anyways. my sympathies. Hope you can get your games back. :/

Regardless of law, the lack of communication there is awful. And legal =/= moral. I can see some Escapists are going to make somewhat bad parents in the future...

In any case, I can top this with a story a friend of mine who owns a local cafe told me. When he was a teenager, his father (whose wife had passed on) remarried. One day, he returned from work to find that she had burned or sold his father's (my friend's grandfather's) military uniform, his various written commendations and medals because they were "useless crap that were taking up space". No beforehand discussion, just *blip* gone. To me, that's the insight that proves a total *****. If that'd been me, she'd have been out on her ear by sundown.
that is just wrong. How disrespectful to that person's father.

As someone who grew up in near poverty, you can eat a lot with $30 when you have to. You can also get more for a game collection.
If the mom just went to gamestop and asked for cash, she deserves to starve.

I have not heard of parents selling games...but one of my friend's mom took a hammer to a copy of Final Fantasy III (The American III, IE FF6 japan, the good one)

It turns out he was borrowing it from my other friend. His mom was mortified when she learned that she destroyed a borrowed game and replaced it.

Moral of the story: Tell your mom some of your games are borrowed, but not which ones.

One day my sister came over and my mom let her take my game cube and my collection of 40+ games. Her justification was along the lines of "You just got a Xbox 360 so why do you need an old system". I didn't mind to much because my sister lives close enough and I had access to my games. Anyway fast forward a little while I got a netflix subscription and my sister liked it so much she decided she wanted to get a netflix streaming device for herself. Without my knowledge or consent(at this point in time I just figured she would give it back when she got bored) she took all my gamecube stuff (the system games, controllers and memory cards) and trades them in at gamestop for a ps3 so she can watch movies off of my fucking netflix. I still to this day can not talk to her about this incident without becoming irate and my mom just doesn't get it and accuses me of being petty.

She may be able to sell all your games legally, but that doesn't make it justified in the slightest. Minors should still have rights to their own property, even if it was mostly bought by their parents. Unless you were doing something really bad and deserved to have your prized possessions confiscated as punishment, what your mother did was evil.

If my father sold anything of mine without asking, I'd return the favour.

If the games were given as a gift you can't jsut say his mom paid for them so she can do what she wants.

That's like me giving you a new puppy and then just whisking him off to the pound one day because I saw you weren't paying attention to him for a split second.

Anyway, my parents would never touch any of my games these days. Not only is my current 360 one bought with my own coin, but mose of the games I still own were bought with money I made by selling my other games. If they had ever pulled a stunt like this I guarantee I probably would have not spoken to them for a good week or more.

How could one's parents be so thoughtless to their feelings and just take and be rid of something without even asking first? That is a total breach of trust. That's like if your father had given her a diamond ring for her birthday and then decided one day for no reason just to pawn it off. Ask her to imagine how she'd feel if that were to happen.

"Well that's a totally different situation." She says.
"Because I can actually interact with my games, but you only wear a ring on your finger?" You counter.

^^^This Right Here^^^

Once I've moved out I have no intention of leaving behind my 360 or PS2; even if I were not able to play them and had no place to plug them in, I still refuse to leave them behind in fear of a "spring cleaning sudden garage sale." The Gamecube and a few games will probably come with me too, but the little brother can keep the PS1, Wii (Which can also play GC games) and SNES. He'll keep an eye on the SNES I'm sure. I just have nothing really on the SNES anymore I'm super anal about keeping.

Just saying that the puppy comparison is quite extreme. You're comparing a living being to a piece of hardware, and without any kind of info saying you didn't pay attention for half a second isn't really applicable.

Also the ring comparison is also kind of extreme. Excluding the sheer monetary difference, other copies of games exist where as a diamond ring is pretty significant between a married couple. I'm just kind of surprised how quickly people afe to condemn her considering how little info people know of the situation.

Iv'e heard a lot of stories about others having games they wanted to keep sold by their parents, and i have had friends that had the same situations.

Never did I htink it would happen to me, but then i get home ot find all my PSX and PS2 games have gone! I ask my mother if she knows the whereabouts of my games, and she tells me she sold them to somebody. Now i plan to track that person down and get my games back, but thats for another time. The fact she took my memories and sold them is downright unbelievable.

So who else has had this happent to them? Have you had your old games sold without your knowledge or permission?
My parents would never think of selling my games without my persmission. But, however when I was a kid my mother would throw out my N64, NES, and SNES game boxes. I didn't really care or know any better at the time, but I wish I still had them now.
Funny my mum did the same. Only she did it because "girls don't play video games". She hates that I still play them now that I'm old enough to buy them without her having any say so. But I got mad when she did. When I move, I'm packing everything and hiding the games and systems and giving them plus the money to send them to me to my mate so that I know they'll get there in one piece and they won't be sold. And I'll leave enough room in one of the boxes for her to pack my Wii in there as well since she has that
Fortunately my parents haven't sold my games, and they would consider a statement like that sexist (plus I'm male, so it wouldn't apply to me anyway), buy my mom absolutely /loves/ to go on rants about how it's time to "put away childish things" because she thinks I should have outgrown both videogames and any cartoons that aren't Looney Toons or Pixar at this point. I'm almost 22 and still living at home, but it's because we agreed before I ever graduated high school that I would be able to live at home rent free as long as I was going to school full time. Well, I've been living at home for about three weeks now after living on campus for the majority of the last year and a half (I'm doing my final internship, which is actually a for-credit part of the degree in my home county to save money), and suddenly I'm 12 again. They enforce a bedtime, wake me up every morning whether they have a reason to or not, and then pull the "when you start acting like an adult[footnote]apparently defined in their minds by doing exactly what they say when they say it[/footnote], we'll treat you like one" line. Just a note to any teenagers who are about to graduate high school: if you can afford to do it, move out of your parents house as soon as possible.

didnt happen to me, but my friend's dad sold all of his games. and consoles. and tv. and bed.and everything in his room. and maybe threw out the window and smashed would be a better phrase than sold.

back on topic, my parents wont sell my games, even if i want to sell them, because they think they will become valuble, like old games are now.

I sold my parents for games a long time ago, and it was worth it!
When I wish I had them back with me I just put in that cartridge of Asteroids in the ol' 2600 and smile
