Because it's not like they don't drive cars at all, but they show off jumping on trash bins for the camera. It's just a stunt, but it's classified by some as "way of navigating over every obstacle in front of you, instead of bypassing it" in lame-mans terms.

So in short, this was a rant on why I think parkour is just some street stunts, nothing more.
Then you've misunderstood parkour.
Of course there are idiots who do parkour to show off and be 'super cool', but there are people like that in every walk of life, in nearly every hobby. Some people, regardless of activity, are just idiots.

But parkour started, and remains, as a freedom of expression.
The idea is that the sidewalk is made for walking. Rails for made to keep you safe. Steps are made for walking up and down. The way everything is designed to to keep people moving a certain way, and parkour, as a freedom of movement, defies that conventionality. It's the idea that we can run, jump, flip, and bound off of these things just because we can. That we don't have to be shoe-horned into walking, stepping, and moving around like everyone else.

Beyond that, it's also about healthy living. Parkour takes a butt-load of physical ability to do properly, and you need to live, eat, and work-out right if you want to do it with any form of decent ability.

And also: It's fun! Remember being a kid, and running around through the play ground, through stores, and all over a jungle gym? Well, that's still fun when you're older. Running around, leaping over stuff, climbing stuff, it's just fun. There isn't anything immature about it, it's just fun to feel the wind rushing past your face while leaping over a picnic table and bounding up stairs.

Leastways, I think it's fun!

Not all who do parkour are douchebags. Sure, there are a lot of people who want to show off with their free running and whatnot, but just because some do, doesn't mean that they're all like that.

I did attempt parkour at one stage, but my attempts consisted mostly of me falling from high places and not landing on my feet. Would be a good way to get around though. I just lack the upper body strength to do it.

I don't want to sound like one of the douches you've been talking about, but the random flips and fancy douche-y tricks are free running, not parkour. Parkour is just getting from point A to B as fast as possible, and if anyone's wondering why people do it, it's like rock climbing. You could easily just drive up a mountain, put people climb up cliffs anyway.

And free running is douche-tastc. It's like the American football to the rest of the world's football.

It is a great way to stay in shape and have fun! Freerunning, is as previously mentioned, more flippy stuff, which is pretty flasy. Parkour is being to overcome obstacles in order to be able to quickly make your way around wherever you may be. My friends and I will do a kind of follow the leader around town with it. It's exciting and fun.

I used to be really into Parkour. I trained almost every day for two years and just when I got somewhat good in it I broke my leg and couldn't do anything for almost a year(it was pretty bad) so I had to start all over again, practicing everything, so I just quit. A friend of mine has been pretty persistant and he's got some really good results. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TM-vHA3CDbM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Osk7Zb7fjow

I'm not really sure where my stance on parkour lies. I've never tried it. I don't know anyone who has. But, I don't think I would hate someone if they practiced parkour. Oh, and if you're going to ask, I've never tried it because I don't think I'm athletic enough.

I look at it the same way I look at skateboarding or any other urban obstacle-based sport.
Yes, it's exhibitionistic, but if it's fun then that matters not a jot.

I'm quick on my feet, so I can sprint fast and avoid obstacles. So I'm pretty sure I can outrace a guy doing parkour.

Parkour is also not very practical where I live. Jumping from a 30 story building onto a 20 story building is not a good idea. And I'm pretty sure my neighbours won't be very happy if I started leaving footprints on their walls.

Nope, I can't agree that it's just jumping off bins for a camera, the shit they do is immensely hard and must feel amazing to land. I'm incredibly jealous I'll never be able to do anything like it to get that feeling.
Its mostly just adrenaline you could just as easily ride a rollercoaster or get a big hit in the big game pretty much the same feeling. Though I'm not dissing parkour it looks really hard and like it takes time to master it just seems stupid to me.

A rollercoaster would be fuck all compared to that, you know they're safe, when if you die is down to you not messing up the adrenaline would be huge. The only thing I've experienced that is closer to it would be cliffjumping, but that doesn't take skill not to die, only takes skill to look good. I'm sure skydiving would be close to it, and that doesn't take as much skill so you just feel proud you jumped out of the plane not that you did anything particularly difficult at the same time.

(Plus I really couldn't care less about team sport)

Edit: The adrenaline plus accomplishment combo is what I'm looking for, a rollercoaster would be terrible compared. That's the point I made into a long winded paragraph.

I always have respect for the people who can do it, since its practically superhuman how long they can keep it up.

But I have MORE respect for this guy,
Parkour on a bike? Some seriously amazing control, of his own body and of something mechanical like a bike. not to mention a well-modded bike

No, trials riding. Trials bikes are made specifically for the purpose.

Parkour is amazing when the people who do it are properly good at it. But most people who do it that you'll me are just dicks that think jumping over a low wall is cool.
