Parties...?

At the few parties I've been to, I never really enjoyed myself. Sure, I was in the company of friends most of the time, but I always found that I became a little depressed for some reason, and ended up sitting outside thinking or watching everyone else enjoy themselves.

And me being my university's resident shadow - to borrow ravensshade's custom title - I don't usually receive invitations and thus not go, nor do I attend any special events at the campus bar.

I have found this to be a very strange thread, I did not at all expect the consensus on parties to be disinterest or even contempt. I suppose parties do not make half as much sense without alcohol..

I consider the parties I have been to as some of the greatest nights of my life, even the pukey and humiliating times. Hell, the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to me (erectile dysfunction during a threesome) was the result of a party, but I don't regret going there; the stupidity of the party has given me experience, which ultimately has made me a more comfortable and confident individual. I can understand the reluctance towards the party amongst us geeks, I felt the same way, but in the long run I just think you can have so much more fun if you let yourself go.

So it is odd you might say that, in this, my first two weeks of University, I have been invited to more parties than I have in all the years of my life... and not attended a single one.

If you get invited then you should go. It's a great way to meet new people. I'm a fresher and i haven't gone out, but it's mostly due to the fact that i haven't got the money to spend £10 on a ticket then £40 on drinks when i've got textbooks and equipment to buy. However these are people that you will have to spend 3-5 years of your life with and is a great way to get to know people.

Yes I do party but not a lot. I prefer going to the pub with a few friends and a chat rather than getting drunk in a club.

I don't trust frat boys, I don't trust alcohol, and I would sooner set a house party on fire than enter it.

I just have to ask: Do you have any experience with alcohol yourself? I did, for the longest time, worry about which side of me it would bring out (I don't feel like I know my psyche very well.). But then, after trying it out in an environment where I felt safe, I discovered that I actually had almost complete control over myself despite being drunk. I was myself, only quite dizzy. It did not turn me into a different person. That said, i don't have any experience with any real excessive drinking, so I wouldn't know what happens then; but in moderation alcohol actually had a really positive effect on me, socially.

I can understand not trusting frat boys though.

I've had a handful of experiences with alcohol; it just makes me sick, as in a fever. Wine and beer taste the same to me. I just don't like the taste of fermented beverages. Also, it effectively hides knock out drugs commonly used in parties, or so I've heard. Hence, me setting fire to anything that hints at "Ladies Night".

I can apparently act drunk; all I do is talk loud, laugh uproariously, and deny that I'm drunk. for anyone like me who don't drink socially, this is a good way to make people think you're cool.

Last party I went to was at some birds house who I didn't know. Got absolutely hammered on a litre of rum plus beer. Insulted this girl because she had small tits. Everyone thought I was awesome. Then I passed out on the bathroom floor around 5ish and left before anyone woke up. I'm like a bad dream.

EDIT: Also. Brah. Just go to the next party you're invited to but be sure to predrink hard to get some of that false courage flowing. You gotta put the foot down man, make a statement and stop putting it on a pedestal. And remember alcohol makes you a million times more attractive to the opposite sex. It's science.

I have gone to some parties. My friends are very avid party goers but me not so much. I go occasionally. I don't really have any issues talking with people so i'm usually fine with parties but i'm just not that into them. I am a nerd at heart and most people don't want to play a board or video games over a party...but hey thats just what defines me.

I started out quite keen on parties to be honest, moved school for 6th form at 16. Made an alcoholic friend and started our own circle of pals and going off the last festival turnout were up to about 36.

From there I've been to parties, hosted parties and even crashed a few. Lived with friends and spent most of the last few years largely drunk.

Slowed down a bit lately, only one bar I bother going to anymore and of the 36 I only really see about 3/4 of 'em regularly. Last party I was at was only because I was dropping my sister off at her mates 18th and birthday girls brother comes running out the house and begs me to stay (brother also happens to be a former housemate of mine) and back him up.

Wang Chung and Volbeat were played during the night as a result.

But the reason I'm telling you this comes next, despair not!

A former school chum of mine went slightly insane after years of drug abuse and last halloween outside a club told me "I thought it was my thing, but it wasn't." (Why he wasn't going into the club, not why he wasn't taking drugs.)

That shits been eating at me for almost a year now and the I've realised after three years working I've got nothing to show for it whatsoever. Last few nights out in big places I've not enjoyed and even this years festivals left me feeling a bit empty (although seeing AC/DC, Blink 182 and Volbeat was pretty awesome.)

More I'm thinking about it (and honestly just reading the first paragraph there) I've gone off parties and starting to suspect they were never really 'my thing' in the first place although I do still enjoy the occasional one.

Think I'll sum this up with a Disney "Just be yourself." line.

I spend all my time at them with my close friends enjoying the atmosphere, maybe speak to some acquaintances. Or if I don't like the crowd (argghh, damn people sometimes), sit on my own and think, while stealing all the good snacks and being thought of as highly anti-social.

I love parties when my close friends are at hand, hate them without 'em.

Craziness... well, once some guys ran into walls and polls for the fun of it, then smacked themselves against a tree, and proceeded to drag one of the branches off... fun times...

"Parties" don't interest me at all. That's not to say that i do not enjoy meeting with people - just that it's not what people call "party".

For example, the last "meetup" i've been to, we decorated the rooms nicely, everyone brought something to eat and drink, put lots of pillows and blankets on the ground, some music at background loudness, and then just talked and enjoyed the atmosphere - no masssive alcohol usage, no "we're soo happy and euphoric"-crap... just meeting with others in a nice atmosphere and thats it.

Been to plenty when I was in high school. They were fun for a while, but soon my friends and I found comfort in bars and proceeded to go there.
Got invited to a bunch, but started to go less and less. I just stopped caring about partying after a while.

Dude. I am EXACTLY like you. I've finished a 3 year university course and never been to a single party or function. Same goes for high school or any other time of my life. It's just the way I am. Have I waisted my life and formative years? Have I missed out on life and love? Probably, but I don't care. I've done what I like to do and that doesn't involve getting blind drunk like my friends and peers like to do. I have been true to myself an how I feel. I hate parties. I mean I'm having a Halloween party this year, but I shall have it how I like it without annoying music and foul coloured drinks. More fun.

You put that far better than I ever could. Except that there's a few more, still roughly 5-10 people drinking but also some non-drinkers around too.

People here never throw parties. You're basically filling your house with people who will most likely steal, break, throw up and pretty much destroy everything you own. Festivals, events, night clubs or bars is where the fun really is at.

Well, if it makes you sick, I can understand not liking it.

As for the knock out drugs: I don't go to the kind of parties where that would be relevant. I prefer more intimate parties where I know pretty much everyone present. I'm more worried about methanol. And I'm a guy, so I probably wouldn't be the target of such knock-out drugs in any case.

But it goes for knock-out drugs as for methanol. Be careful with what you're drinking. Make sure it comes from a bottle that wasn't already opened when the party started, and such.

Edit: Of course, I'm not very experienced, so I'm probably not the best person to be taking advice from.

Hmm last party I went to was a friends 18th there were about 80+ people there, a lot of them smoking and drinking. First hour or so I actually enjoyed myself catching up with some old friends and meeting some new people, but once most of the party hit the other end of the drunk scale were it goes from being a little tipsy and laughing a bit louder then usual to only other drunk people understand you and find you funny stage. That is where I give up and go home, plus I ended up reeking of smoke until I had a shower... bleh.

That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard, just because you don't like parties and don't like occasions where most people don't even remember what happened the next day doesn't mean I stay inside everyday and don't hang out with friends. Parties aren't for everyone, and some of us would rather be sober when having fun with mates, to each there own.

I party all the time. I don't hold parties, but I go to them often enough. I don't go to them as often any more because people don't hold them unless necessary for one.
