My two cents: Current-generation programs do not play nice with multiprocessing. A higher clock frequency would be more noticeable in situations, such as playing a game, than more processors. I would suggest a faster dual-core processor over the slower quad-core processor.
Sorry about that I changed to this,http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037 - I hope thats the processor.

Alright the ATI card is good everythings great, Now its time for me to get the parts. Little check on Newegg somebody says the ATI card uses a quite a bit of power from the PSU. If i'm still going on with a 420watt PSU will this all still work or will I need to upgrade that NOW? Or can it be put off until I get another graphics card?
You should be able to put it off until you need to add something to the rig, yes. Total system power under full stress testing load (which works the machine harder than games do) shouldn't exceed 350 watts. A good 550-600 watt PSU should be in your future though. Having some extra head room is never a bad thing.

Alright so will I want windows xp or linux if I use an ATI card?

Of course you realise that...

Kentsfield CPUs are out of date

GeForce 8800s (of any kind) are out of date

Lower clock speed quad core processors are only quicker than higher clocked dual cores in applications that are optimised for them

You'll need Vista at some point (and it's not that bad, but that's another debate)

Sli/crossfire is an absolute crock and a complete waste of money ...?

I also think you're better off buying slightly slower (less "premium") RAM and getting 4 gigs of it, but I'd be prepared to be corrected on that.

If I were you kid I'd go out and buy an edition of some computer builders magazine like Custom PC or something and get their reviews of a bunch of different components, they'll have compared more different stuff than any of us lot.

Must have edited out the part about me being on the cheap train. Also anybody have any ideas on a CPU heat sink fan thing? Still missing one of those.

HA!
I've seen a couple of those in my father's magazine rack. They are always about a month out of date even from when they are published. They also tend to be really biased since they are paid with advertising money, strangely even more so than websites.

Well at this point I don't think you can even buy Windows XP any more. You might be down to recycling an old copy or piracy if you want XP. If you want to play games, you are going to have to use some version of Windows.

Linux really isn't of much use to the home user unless he is a hobbyist and just likes tinkering with things.

ALL Intel processors come with a heatsink that works well enough. After market ones can cool better (really only neccessissary if you're serious about overclocking) and are quieter. You really don't need to buy a seperate one.

*EDIT*
That ram is DDR2-800. You probably want DDR2-1066. 4GB isn't required yet for any games and when it is, you can add another 2GB if you don't want to spring for it now.

Well windows vista is expensive, and most of its updates are cosmetic/security.

Also will I need a fan?

So far this comes to, 635 without an OS.

Mind finding some cheap DDR2-1066/1333(I think.) RAM? and most are 2 sticks of 2g.(The motherboard does not support DDR3 memory.)

You know what, just forget I said that. That ram should be fine. Corsair is a good manufacturer as well.

And the padawan beats the master?:p
Something like that ;)
I just have overclocking potential running around in the back of my head and its really not worth doubling the cost of the ram.

I might overclock one day, I just might if i'm broke and in dire need to tweak the card. I got the basic principle down.

They lie! Ubuntu is FINE for games. Just use wine.

And overclocking is for speed-freaks that want to squeeze all the power they can from a card.

Also, 4850 is a situational card, and has been beaten by the 8800gts is several gaming benchmark tests.

I'm just saying, I would stay the fuck away from AMD

I gave up on them since I was troubleshooting one of my Video cards, and had been for the last few months,

The conversation with them went like this.

"your drivers are fucked up. You need to fix them."

"We understand the problem."

2 weeks later. "AMD.Drivers.Bullshit.Fix."

One month later.

"FUCKING EH! AMD! YOUR FUCKING DRIVERS! FIX YOUR FUCKING DRIVERS!"

"We understand the problem, and our software team is hoping it can be resolved soon."

*I then proceed to hang myself with a telephone cord.*
{Genuine Curiosity}
Which card was this and what was it doing?
ATI 2600xt AGP.
The card that made me realize what a shit fest the AMD customer support is. you can go on their boards and look at it. It's STILL in a hell hole.

Yeah I have seen some differences in each card, But the AMD card is decent cheaper and some times even more powerful.

Do as you wish. I'm never going near AMD again. But I wish you best of luck.
