Look up Albion. Pretty sure it's abandonware at this point. It's a fascinating game with a very unique premise. Basically, you come to an abandoned planet on a mining vessel that's supposed to strip-mine the crap out of it. Turns out, though, it's anything BUT the lifeless desert it was supposed to be. In fact, it's lush and teeming with life and home to a variety of races and cultures. When your survey ship crashes, goes out of contact with the main ship, and is rendered completely inoperable you must find a way to contact the crew and stop them from ripping Albion a new one.
Technically, this isn't a JRPG--it's from an age when the JRPG formula was used by both east AND west, sort of trying to follow on the heels of Ultima and Wizardry.
