When you got a pet, about how long did it take before you were actually able to hold them without them freaking out?

For my cat it was a good 4 weeks before she stopped acting like: "OMGWTFBBQ WTF YOU DOING?!?!?"

I picked my rabbit up at the pet store, and never had trouble picking him up in the last few years I've had him. He's such a timid bunny, and one of the best parts of my life. One of the few constants as well.

For me ,almost immedietly, but we got our two dogs when they were puppies, so they were so soft and seemed to trust us right away.

Well, when I first got my dog, he was a 4 weeks old puppy. I was the first one to hold him (we were in a car) and the first thing he did was pee on me. Fun.

After that, we got along just fine. In fact, he started following me everywhere.

Animals are not people. I ask of you internet strangers, please stop anthropomorphizing them.

I've only got fish. I've tried to cuddle them for quite some time now, but they give no reaction whatsoever. Then again, I guess most fish give no reaction whatsoever regardless of what you do to them.

sassenfrassen....didn't see the duplicate thread. Copypasta:

-Wide open question to be honest. Key with cats is to let them come to you. When I rescued my last two (now sadly both gone) I spent a weekend just sitting on my living room floor, not really looking at them and curiosity just got the better of them =D

Also with cats it depends on how they were socialised anyway. Most cat charities in the UK who deal with kittens either foster them to homes to be raised or have volunteer "kitten cuddlers" to handle them and get them used to people.

I honestly suspect that so far as cats go the answer to your question is along the lines of "how long is a piece of string".

I am sure we have doggie Escapists who will have input on dog behaviour, especially regarding pack motivation.

With smaller critters like hamsters or gerbils I doubt they every stop going WTF.....

They all let me hold them without issue.

Hell, animals will come up to me without me even having to beckon them and start rubbing on me.

I'm just an animal person, I guess.

You know that's an impossibility since the Disney movies...

Besides, furries are hot. Don't deny it!

I once petted a deer, it just stood there frozen and I was right next to it before I realized it was there. I just slowly reached out and started petting it on the back, then it's brain kicked back on and it ran off. I am probably lucky it didn't decide to start kicking the shit out of me for touching it. I was 13 in case you lot are wondering. I had yet to learn deer where actually stupid, and sometimes mildly aggressive wild animals that taste pretty good.

And sadly I don't actually find furries attractive, the internet would be a much happier place for me if I did find them attractive.

Same with the princess(Harley a cat) she loves when you pet her/give affection. But once you pick her up it's not on her terms so she desperately tries to get away.

My late dog when we first got him was a con artist. A cute awesome con artist. When we first went to the pound you know the scene(all the dogs barking trying to look cute and escape) and there was this white and brown beautiful Australian Shepard mut. Sitting quietly looking at us. When we first let him out he walked slowly, placed his head in my lap(I was 6 I think?) and liked my hand. We had our dog. So we figured we lucked out and had a timid nice dog.

...then we got home. For two days straight he ran up and down the stairs.

I kid you not. He kept doing that until we were on the brink of actually doing something about it then we oddly all went into the same room to watch TV. He then went into the living room with us and slept.

He just wanted to herd us together.

Try doing that with a bear.

If you cannot you are worse than a 60 year old woman(my Grandma a while back, she had a pet spider too).

Dawwwwwwwwwwwww.

OT: My pets have an uneasy agreement with me, I don't overload them with all the pent up emotion and they don't get angry when I let it out occasionally.

Shame that the Mexican cat grew up, he used to be so carefree when you picked him up.

My dog became comfortable in my arms instantly. The attendant handed him to me and he immediately began licking my face, we've been absolutely inseparable ever since. His eye was injured by one of my mother's cats and had to be amputated, which is why it's sewed shut. But he's no worse for wear.

He's my best friend.[/QUOTE]

Awwww..... I love pugs.

Anyway: My pugs instantly jumped in my lap when I first got them, and my Guinea Pig took about a week to start trusting me.
