The kitty i have still freaks out when i pick her up but she always wants to cuddle up next to me when i sleep.
Same with the princess(Harley a cat) she loves when you pet her/give affection. But once you pick her up it's not on her terms so she desperately tries to get away.

I am sure we have doggie Escapists who will have input on dog behaviour, especially regarding pack motivation.
My late dog when we first got him was a con artist. A cute awesome con artist. When we first went to the pound you know the scene(all the dogs barking trying to look cute and escape) and there was this white and brown beautiful Australian Shepard mut. Sitting quietly looking at us. When we first let him out he walked slowly, placed his head in my lap(I was 6 I think?) and liked my hand. We had our dog. So we figured we lucked out and had a timid nice dog.
...then we got home. For two days straight he ran up and down the stairs.
I kid you not. He kept doing that until we were on the brink of actually doing something about it then we oddly all went into the same room to watch TV. He then went into the living room with us and slept.
He just wanted to herd us together.

They all let me hold them without issue.
Hell, animals will come up to me without me even having to beckon them and start rubbing on me.
I'm just an animal person, I guess.
Try doing that with a bear.
If you cannot you are worse than a 60 year old woman(my Grandma a while back, she had a pet spider too).

OT: My pets have an uneasy agreement with me, I don't overload them with all the pent up emotion and they don't get angry when I let it out occasionally.
Shame that the Mexican cat grew up, he used to be so carefree when you picked him up.
