** NOTE! THIS THREAD IS ONLY FOR THOSE WITH MORE THEN 10 IQ POINTS **

Like Philosophy? Let's discuss it!

Let's start with the big question..

Is our life a dream?

Well,I honestly don't know. If it is,I doubt it is me that is dreaming. Maybe it is you,or the dog,or the mailman.

Discuss!

I if it is a dream, why do we feel pain?that would mean that it is a high level form of something similar to hypnosis, and not what we call a dream.

Lucky you that no one with less than 10 IQ points shall be on here, because that would mean you were basically brain-dead, unable to even control bodily functions such as typing.

I do hope this is not a Matrix question, because I honestly don't care if I'm in the Matrix or not, so long as I am doing something. I do not consider my lfie a dream, because in dreams I have only the senses of sight and hearing, nothing more.

I'm an objectivist. I take things as they are. I don't think that we live in an alternate reality, cause we perceive this reality, and we see nothing else, so shouldn't this be real? We have nothing that could prove the chance of an alternate world. A=A. A could =B but we can't prove that, cause B isn't perceived by us. If you like to know more, I recommend reading An Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology by Ayn Rand.

How do you know you feel pain?

The mind makes it real.

(In other words: I see this dissolving into a large string of Matrix quotes, and I am all for it!

I...what?

OT: I don't think I have the imagination for this.

I've felt pain in dreams before. Actually, in almost all my dreams, and it's usually worse pain than I could ever imagine feeling in real life. Although I wouldn't call myself normal, so...

well according to descartes meditations, the only thing that is certain is the cogito, everything else could be conjured by an evil demon.
i myself don't care, i spent a year doing a level philosophy and hated every minute (still did quite well, though)

Basic answer.

We can prove that we exist. "I think therefore I am."

However, there is a problem with this. How do I prove to you that I think? I could just be voicing opinions you yourself hold deep within your subconscious. Back-up question: How do you prove to me that you think? Same problem.

Reality could very well be a dream, but are we the back-up characters, the protagonists, or the antagonists?

I think that the question is life a dream needs clarification for what you mean by dream.

The only logical is life a dream stance that i could see is that if each person were to claim that the dream was their own because only I view the world and everyone else may be my dream, obviously this is recreated for the next person who also relatively is the only person who views the world.

Relative to me a person who reads this comment and doesnt post their opinion doesnt actually exsist as i never know of their exsistance and a person who posts a comment only exsists as the world on this forum. And similary i only exsist to the people reading this as words, from their perspective i do not actually exsist, only my words do.

That is ofcourse assuming that this is all your dream.

Fniff, I would have to ask you what makes you entertain that possibility.
Depending on your answer, I could give you a better response.
If it's just a fleeting thought, then I'd be able to dismiss your assertion of life being a dream, as every single dream I've ever had(this may be different for others) has been completely off the wall. That property of dreaming(again, for me) makes it easy to discern when I am actually observing and living something real, or just laying in bed and letting my mind go nuts.

As for your other possibility, me being in someone else's dream:
Well, I cannot say much on that. It is not exactly possible to disprove something that is purely conjecture. If I am merely a creation of another person's mind, then that person is quite dull, honestly.

I think you could make them feel emotion by a series of events happening in their life culminating in either a wonderful self-realization or complete insanity.

Hey, this is pretty fun.[footnote]By the way, I have not taken any classes in philosophy, so I may be completely out of my area of experience here.[/footnote]

Same here, I once dreamt someone kicked me in the groin. It hurt. Really bad. It even hurt after I woke up.

Wasn't this one of the basic messages of Kant? That we can't know whether what we see is real or not, but until we're given reason to believe that it isn't real, we ought to treat it as if it was.

I know you can't prove that reality isn't a dream, but you can't prove it is a dream either, and i for one think we live in th real world. We're born we grow up we maybe drop a sprog or two and then we die! that's it. And if reality was a dream/simulation where are we dreaming from and how come we never wake up?

I know for one thing. I'm the comic relief.

Dreams can be so realistic that you cannot fathom that you woke up. It's kinda annoying when you wake up to go to work.

Exententialism and Humanism by Satre, a book to live by.

It's the shortest philosophy book I've ever come across. Should be proscribed reading for everyone. Damn hard to get a hold of in real-life though.

Life itself is only a vision, a dream.
Nothing exsists say empty space and you.
And you are but a thought.
