First one that sprung to mind was "I could care less." It's COULDN'T, damn it.

Also I hate when the word rape is used for something that isn't rape, like, when someone gets killed in a video game and go "Oh, man, I just got raped." It's not a good word to use so casually, a lot of people find it being used so casually offensive for good reason. If a rape survivor heard it being used it would most likely stir up horrible memories of a horrible experience.

I don't think these phrases are that popular now, but "Mess with the best, die like the rest." or "Get rich or die tryin'." really got on my goddamn nerves for a time.

"Back in my day" with the exception of people over 50.
Seriously if your not that old why act like you are, sure things change over time but find another phrase.
Something more apt like "only a few years ago",would be so much better.

"History is written by the victors." No it isn't, it's written by whatever perspective is available and appeals to a given society. Unless the victorious side makes a successful effort to completely surpress any sources that support the perspective of their opponents and keeps it up for a long enough time, our view on history will change or at least get challenged with every new generation.

The worst one: "Check your privilege."

Nothing but a cop-out attempt to avoid a mature conversation about a complicated topic while also attempting to maintain the moral high ground via several forms of logical fallacy. It's incredibly infuriating.
Definitely have similar feelings. The idea that someone's position in life should necessarily make their points about those in different situation null simply by who is speaking them, rather than their actual content...urks me. Worse, it turns situations into some twisted "I'm more oppressed than you, so I'm a better person", which is disgusting behavior.
Eh, I'm conflicted on that one, since I can certainly see why you would sometimes want to remind people that their reality of life is not necessarily representative of everyone else. On the other hand, I hate how nowadays its function in internet debates seems to have mostly shifted from advicing someone to consider whether their point of view might be more coloured by their personal life experiences than they had initially thought to shutting them up unless they share your opinion.

The overly liberal use of the phrase "mind-blowing". That used to mean something, now people use it for everything. God damn it's annoying.

Then there's just the improper use of "literally" but that doesn't really count I guess

I think that phrase just shows that the "losers" are typically dead, and unable to give their version of events. If history can be manipulated for the benefit of the victor then it will unless somebody is somehow able to prove otherwise. I'm sure there are many things lost in history because of suppression, though it would be harder to do in the modern world thanks to the internet.

It can kind of work both ways. If someone couldn't care less, then that could either mean it's not possible to care less because they don't care, or they couldn't care less because there's no way they can stop caring about it because it matters so much.

Could care less could mean that they don't care, but they could stand to care less, or that since they care about something so much that they could care less but they don't... That one doesn't work as well both ways though.

Couldn't is still the better term though

I've always disliked the phrase "just sayin'" or "I'm just being honest."

As if that somehow absolves you of any consequences of whatever dickish thing you just said.
Or it implies that most of the time you aren't honest.

Social Justice Warrior/ White knight/ bunny hugger/ do gooder/ *insert racial epithet here* lover

All of these mean pretty much the same thing, just in different contexts, from pretty much the same worthless assholes.

"a leopard never changes its spots"

Often said by people who are just inherently distrustful of everyone. I hate this expression, because the user has completely eliminated the possibility that people may change in the future. It's a very dark, hopeless way of viewing the world, one that allows for no improvement. The mindset behind this saying is so bleak.

"I'm proud to be X" or "I'm a proud X" where X is a nationality or race. Give me a break. Whatever ethnicity a person is, they did nothing to earn it. They were born whatever ethnicity they are. And unless you had to pass some sort of difficult test to become a citizen, being proud of your citizenship is stupid. You can be proud FOR your country, you can be GRATEFUL that you are a citizen, but to be proud of being an America, or a Chinese Citizen, or a Brit or a German or a South Africa or Japanese - that's ludicrous. I despise people who look at the accomplishments of their ancestors and their country as a collective, and then derive some sense of personal superiority as a result of that.

Oh that one just drives me up the wall. Even after they tell you what the problem is, that phrase will still be used. "You don't understand" and "You wouldn't understand" makes it sound like they are the only ones that go through what they go through and mostly automatically assume that I may not have been through the same thing. Granted, not everyone goes through the same thing but when someone uses that phrase over and over again, there is no point engaging with them. You want to help but it turns aggressive so you will just have to back off. You are right, we won't understand unless you say it.

The usual "believe in yourself", "accept yourself as you are" alleged self-help slacktivist bullshit annoy the living piss out of me. That and general justification of any lazy/irresponsible action
What's wrong with believing in yourself?
Nothing, just that generally it's easier said than done.

Like, "Oh, I should believe in myself? That never occurred to me before."

Besides, if you have little faith in yourself, then it's unlikely to mean much if you do believe in yourself.

What annoys me isn't so much a specific saying as it's a habit some people have online.

I sort of understand how forums like this allow for heat-of-the-moment posts and basic stream-of-consciousness spiels, but I can't get past awful spelling that's excused with the argument that "everyone" makes awful typos online.

Right. Everyone makes typos online, so why shouldn't I leave my unformed thoughts or opinions as typo-riddled word and punctuation salads? Everyone's jumping off bridges, now, it's the new "in" thing to do. Why shouldn't I do it?

No. Just - no. You're speaking English? Then make an effort. English is my second language and I sometimes type things out in a cleaner fashion than lifelong first-language speakers. I can tolerate the usual acronyms, sure, but what really gets my goat is when ppl do stuff like dis. fuck grammer and spellin, i aint got time. rofl.

"If you can't beat 'em, join 'em."

A defeatist phrase that eschews any type of morality or principles.

"That's just the way it is."

In a similar vein. It means you are too lazy to have morality or principles with which to meaningfully combat a problem.

Oh my GOD, this one! I had a friend in middle school who would always use these phrases to justify being an asshole. That, or "Get a sense of humour!". It pretty much sends me into a berserker mode whenever I hear it being used seriously.

OT: "You're just jealous!"

Mostly used in discussions about people you don't like who happen to be famous. Yes, some people hate them because they're jealous of their fame (talent may or may not be included) or their looks or whatever. There'll always be people like that. But, you know; Maybe, just maybe, some people don't like [Celebrity] because [Celebrity]'s a huge prick? I don't dislike Justin Bieber (I've never hated him, mind you, I just thought his music was shitty) because I'm jealous; I dislike him because he's an asshole. That, and I think that it's an incredibly obnoxious phrase.
(This might be a bit irrelevant, but I have to say that I'm wondering about some people's reactions when Bieber got arrested for DUI: Were people genuinely happy that a criminal had been caught, or was it just Schadenfreude because they don't like his music?)

Put the "keys and locks" analogy on there, too. Really, any phrase that would indicate that some things are okay for one gender and taboo for another gets my goat.

Generally, though, I get more irritated by how people say things rather than what they say.

There are a lot I hate.

Combined words. I really hate stupid combined words.
Like guestimate.
It's not the same as portmanteaus used for a reason. Like 'gorn', which is gore and porn.
It's just nonsensical words that make no sense. They actually weaken adn contradict the words.
Guestimate, is really stupid. Estimate is a exact word. Guess is a vague word.

I hate the ridiculous over the top stupidity of things like
I don't want to live on this planet anymore, etc. Anything of the kind that implies they want to leave the planet because of something minor and stupid.

Or that crap were they take one bad thing and act like they lost a nonexistant faith in people.
'I lost all faith in humanity' is one. Since when did you HAVE faith in humanity to begin with?!
And you're going to dismiss the nice and good people, as well as the bad now? Just because of one thing?!
If you have faith in something, it's your religion, not people!

Anything that implies animals are saints piss' me off. Or tries to enforce some draconian idea that every one wants a dog or cat.

Animals never hurt each other. Animals ar'nt evil. Animals are saintly. And all that crap.
Excuse me! Have you SEEN what predaters do?! Have seen what animals do to each other?! Some of them are freaking cannibals!

Dogs always love you. Dogs are so loyal. And all that crap. Nothing loves you like a dog. Humans bad, dogs good. Dogs are lovely and perfect.
They're pack animals. They're predesposed to swear loyalty to the pack leader. FFS!

Or implying cats are saintly. Or this idiocy
The sound of happiness is a cat puring. And variations.
Cats are mercurial beasts who take what they want. And for that I respect them more. If the cats purring, it's most likely because it got what it wanted. Not because it loves you.

And that bloody draconianly phrases rubbish that some have that everyone must love animals and have a pet. Especially dogs. Oh gods, the dog pushing is painful!
One of the worst is this
Every home must have a dog and every dog must have a home.

Excuse me?! Who the firetruck are you to tell me what I should have or not! I hate dogs! They're smelly, loud, and have disgusting habits.
I'm never having a pet ever again! For the record, my pets were budgerigars.
I don't hate dogs in a general sense. One of the best charities I've seen is Nowzad, a charity that helps people and animals in afghanistan, including dogs. It educates and helps the natives and sends the animals soldiers adopted back to their homes. Or find them homes.
But I don't like dogs personally. They're dirty animals with bad habits.
Nowzad is a sensible charity. They don't do the stupidity mentioned here.

Apparently the idiots think that everyone must love the animal of choice.
Despite these cretinous things being often on the same pages as worthy, boring, ranting about puppy mills and badly treated animals.
Yes, they really think sociopaths, dog fighters, and lunatics and idiots should have a pet.

Noticablely, people who have or like birds and fish, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc, they don't do this stupidity. If they do, it's well hidden and rare.
I've never seen anyone declare that you must love budgerigars or goldfish.

PC master race.
The total and utter cretins who use this obviously never saw the zero punctuation video it came from.
Were it was very clearly used to insult pc elitists.

Apparently the idiots who use it are so thick they don't get it.
And they never heard of the association with nazism that the words 'master race' has.
With all that stuff about dogs and cats, what is your opinion on other choices of pets?

O.T. Mine is something if I'm told this now I'll be pissed.

"Have some patience." I'm sorry but I have plenty of that but it has been half a year and the tech guy that's supposed to be fixing my gun has apparently still not gotten around to fixing it, my patience is not at an all time high right now. In case you think I'm exaggerating, I sent it in back in March.
Have some patience, ugh. That would get really annoying. That is way too long to wait for something to get fixed.
I know, right? You know the phrase "time is money?" In terms of repair services, I realize now it means "take however much time you need, but keep in mind that the customer will not wait forever." Think of it in terms of taking your laptop in to be fixed on January. Fast forward to June and the customer comes in and demands a refund and the laptop back. Well done, you lost a customer and gained no money. My situation is worse than that though because the repairs can be done at home. The reason I didn't is because I have a tremor and a lack of coordination and the fix has a bunch of small pieces that I don't want to lose. It shows just how much time it should not take.

"Deal with it". The amount of smug is just unbearable and very punch-in-the-face worthy.
The word "entitled" pisses me off because it's usually reserved for defending game industry that frankly doesn't need and doesn't deserve defending.

People who think "either" is interchangeable with "neither"/don't know neither is a word and yell at me when I correct them.

Edit: Not really a phrase but it annoys me so I guess it belongs here.
