I'm a very picky gamer. At least, I've become one. When you have to fork out £60-£50 for a game you tend to be pretty pissed if its not perfect. Got pretty angry at Fable 2 and the new Prince of Persia because of this, and its the reason I still haven't bought GTA 4 or Fallout 3 (I didn't like Oblivion)

Its also the reason why I bought a new PS2 and some Gamecube controllers for my Wii. If a £5 game is shit, its no big deal.

same with GTA4. and so on.

110% percent of people play games?!?
LOLOL! Maybe the errant 10% us people who both praise and shit on the game. . .lol!

It's more like people start playing a game with all the wrong expectations. If you don't try to like it, you won't. The view of expecting things to be shit until they prove you wrong is all good and fine until you realize the player's mindset is 45% of the equation.
Not really. I started playing Psychonauts with the following mindset "This game is going to suck so hard its lips will dry out". Now I'm ready to recommend Psychonauts to everyone.
I went in to Psyconauts with the mind set that this was going to be great and I was severly disspointed with some bad mechanics and some annoying voice acting

People are going to have different tastes in games, but I have to agree on one point. GTA4's score just baffles me, mostly its score on metacritic which gives a game's average based on the reviews it got. GTA4 has a score on metacritic of 98 with 64 reviews. The lowest score it got was 87. That all those reviews had nothing or almost nothing but praise for the game strikes me as suspicious and is just another good reason to ignore the score and go straight to a review's content. You mean to tell me not one of these reviewers had any major complaints? MGS4, btw, has a score of 94 on Metacritic with 81 reviews and its lowest score at 80. I'm not saying either of these are bad, since I've never played either myself out of a distinct lack of interest, but can all these reviewers really claim the games are flawless or nearly flawless?

Not much to say about this, since no games is going to be perfect. Along with diffrent people value diffrent video game elements over others.

For instance, Some people like think plot is more important than gameplay.

Some people think the oppisite, neitheir are inherently wrong, just diffrent.

What would you call a game that can't maintain a steady framerate or has game ending bugs? Would an unfinished game not be considered shit?
Possibly a reference to an elder scrolls or fallout game?
I wouldn't say it makes it a shit game, buggy like crazy perhaps but still enjoyable.

Slow framerates are usually caused by the system you run it off, not the game itself.
Hey, I've never had a framerate problem with Fallout.

Seriously, OP, I'm sorry, but this is stupid.
Some people like country music.
Some people like rap.
Some people like GTA 4.
Some peolpe think it was boring.

It's this thing called an opinion, or personal taste.
Depending on which you prefer.
I think the OP is asking more along the lines of why people jump on it. They're not talking about posters who go, "Hrm... I don't like the genre, so I'm prolly not gonna like this game," they're talking about, "This game sucks. Everything about it is Fail." And that's disrespecting the opinions of the people who do like whatever they're talking about.

Often it's a genre they don't like or suck at (I imagine Halo fratboys will be hating on Halo Wars), or they have already made up their mind that [insert game here] is TEH BEST GAEM EAVAR!!!! and therefore conclude that everything else is shit.

So to conclude, it's ignorance.

What I want to know is HOW THE HELL DID GTA4 GET 10/10!? It's retarded. The graphics weren't really that good compared to say Drake's Fortune, game play was the same as any other GTA and that is my opinion.
Not having a go at you specifically (or you at all really) but this is what TopHatTim is talking about.

The graphics are something that picky gamers complain at. Things like graphics don't matter that much. Sure good graphics help with the immersion but even then you can easily be immersed into a text based game. Go and play Doom and you'll know what I'm on about. Also the cop-out "That's my opinion" line. Sure, it's your opinion, but if people are going to use that as an excuse to slander a game without any good reasoning will lead to that argument becoming moot.

Nope it got an 8, IGN can't be trusted dude, and if gamespot editors dont award high profile games a large score they get fucking fired.

OK, it's said that 40% of Americans will never vote Republican, 40% of Americans will never vote Democrat, and the remaining 20% are therefore effectively deciding the result of every election. It seems to be an unfortunate part of human nature to have an opinion, whether or not you're qualified to give one.

For example, as a British guy, I will happily admit that I have no idea whether the European Union is a good thing or a bad thing in nearly every respect. I would think most people could say the same thing, and yet everyone seems to hold an opinion about it one way or t'other... It's the same with everything else. People have prejudices, preconceptions, weird quirks and associations, etc. It's hard to be totally objective.

Former GameSpot editor Jason Ocampo left GameSpot after Gerstmann gate for IGN.
Ign can be trusted bro.
but you are right about gamespot.
but everyother site had more then a 9.2
and that was IGN's first 10/10 on an exclusive game in a decade

Oh, and another example: look for YouTube videos of McCain votors in the last election agreeing with Barack Obama's policies when told they were McCain's, and vice versa. They're all over the place. The point being: calling yourself a Democrat or a Republican doesn't necessarily mean you know about politics, it may just mean that you prefer to be associated with that particular group. Hell, advertisers everywhere use "brand loyalty" for the exact same reasons. Which brings us right back to the videogames argument (I hadn't forgotten about that!) People who pride themselves on being "alternative" will distance themselves from the mainstream by feigning dislike of the "Halo"s and "Gears of War"s, whereas people who want to be looked upon as "l33t gam3rz" will boast about their achievements in all the biggest named games. It's not about wrong or right, it's just about image.

It's all rather pathetic, and I think the lesson to take from it is that people should "stick to what they know". Trouble is, that idea rather goes against the idea of democracy...

I'm not sure if that's the case, but if it is, I don't really have an eloquent answer.
Just a rather blunt one: People often behave rather dickishly.
Going "Hmm I don't like this," isn't good enough for those people. They need to get on the rooftops, push the fiddler off, and scream "THIS IS SHIT BECAUSE I DON'T LIKE IT"
It's sort of circular reasoning: They do it because they're dicks, and they're dicks because they do it.

EDIT: Rereading my first answer, it wasn't so eloquent either.
MaxtheReaper, you are my favourite escapist forumite, I completly understood what you was trying to say.

Take my posts versus the OP, he stated that MGS got a 10, without quoting source material, so my reply was that it didn't get 10, it got an 8.... I didn't quote the source material I was reading either, on the basis that the OP didn't quote his

I could have been mature about it and linked to what i referenced but because he didn't I chose not too, I just flung shit like a dirty monkey man that I am.

Its the biggest problem with gaming, the people who play and discuss games, and the professional media (CVG i'm looking at you) are ultimatly incredibly immature, the only way it will be accepted as an art form is if we silence our inner child, such as myself that makes me act like a douche on this site sometimes.

and regarding people jumping onto a 10 out of 10 game, let them, its their choice!, but think before you post.

I got into an argument on this site regarding me not liking Halo 3, for hating Halo 3 I was told I was a sheep for not liking something that is universally loved.... yeah you heard that right, I'm a follower for not liking what everyone likes, chortle.

I'm 27 and i'm immature about games, of course I am, I'll jump in a thread and i'll bite the bait for shits and giggles, because thats the culture of games.

I would never do that with the Divine Comedy or the Oddessey, because doing so would be frowned upon in the book reading circles

I think people who get upset at people not liking a game that they like is silly. People have different opinions, big deal. If someone doesn't like a game, then they just don't like a game. No need to get upset, people are just different.
