Piracy on the high seas? Oh, that slaps me on the knee xD

I promised that I would always post this video every time pirates are mentioned, so here it is:

Speaking of which, I guess a dedicated file-sharing satellite would probably have Gundams protecting it as well. :p

As entertaining as they are, it's incredibly unlikely that either of these plans will ever come to fruition. They're both too expensive and too difficult to ever be feasible, not to mention that it the PPI really wanted to host file sharing servers outside of any country's jurisdiction, a boat in international waters seems a much easier way of doing it, especially as no specific law prohibits it yet.
Arguably, though, a boat would also be an easier target for a covert ops team (of any country) to attack. Just remember what happened to Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior.

The group acknowledges that it wouldn't be a permanent solution, but hopes to aggravate as many governments as possible for as long as possible.
I loved that line ^_^

It's official, we are now watching an arms race.

Also, how to repair it if it gets thrashed by a storm?

Yeah, and they'd also be a perfect target for real pirates. You know, the kind that sales around on ships and like to shoot at people. Or take them hostage.

Just imagine the news story that would create.

"Hey! The government don't control the AIR! What if you lived in a BALLOON!"
You wouldn't believe how many times that line when through my head when I was writing this.
Ah, you could've rolled with it... but then it would have been harder to lead into Steampunk references. I can't decide which I like more, Steampunk or references to classic Simpsons episodes.

While we are at it, perhaps if the pirates do go steampunk they will need some mercenaries to defend their Amazing Sky City:

Yes, on the far left that IS Abraham Lincoln with a flame thrower

Are they suggesting something like THIS?

Why build it in the sky when you can build it at the bottom of the ocean?
"People said it was impossible to host our servers under the ocean. No, it was impossible to host them ANYWHERE ELSE!"

Unfortunately not even there as it turns out The Queen owns the ocean floor.

You gonna dispute that claim? She's got The SAS on speed-dial.

Funny thing, by sticking themselves in international water wouldn't they basically be excluding themselves to any protection? I mean, fishing boats are protected under international law, so are ships transferring goods from one place to another... but a ship simply sitting in international waters?

Do I pirate? yes Is it illegal? yes I do it knowing full well of this fact. I would have much more respect for em if they would just admit hey we want stuff for free and want others to have stuff for free. I get sick of pirates and pirate groups actually trying to claim they are fighting for lofty goals with what they do.
I don't deny that I want stuff for free; like you I suppose, I do not have the money to get everything I want.

There's nothing worse then a thief of hobbies/pass times/entertainment products whom actually claim they aren't a thief...stealing food or water is one thing...but this stuff is not a requirement its not a needful thing.
At least if you care to raise your standards from the bottom, every book you read and every movie you watch is food for though. A very needfull thing for some of us :p

Now, that's brainstorming!

If they can get you on land, take to the air, lads! The damned imperials can't touch us there!

In all seriousness, even if they gathered the money and resources to make this happen, Viacom would find a way to take it down.

You seen the massive raids they conduct on Youtube with their copyright thugs?

I can see them buying out the USAF or Lockheed Martin to shoot it down with a single "misfired" heat-seeking missile.

Rarely do movies actually further thought, books yes..but there aren't many instances of people jumping on a torrent to download the latest book.

Apparently the pirates are subscribing to the Wile E. Coyote school of problem solving.

Or perhaps someone could mention to them that for the amount of money it would take to launch a satellite into space, they could just buy the stupid material.

/sigh, Pirates? What's wrong with you. You're not crusaders. You're just stupid.

EDIT:

Lol. Funny, but idiotic if your goals are piracy.

I had similar ideas to be honest, but my goals were in creating an actual independent and entirely virtual country.
(Think second life but taken to whatever extreme technology allows)

The reason for having servers in international waters/airspace in such a case is that you can't run a truly independent nation from servers located within the territory of another country unless the other country happens to be cooperative.

Of course, the idea has more serious problems with regard to the citizens themselves; Since human beings can't be digitised (Not yet, in any event. And if it ever will be possible depends on a lot of unknowns to do with the nature of conciousness).
And since a human still has a body, you need actual land to put it on even if you have a country which otherwise is virtual.
At the bare minimum, you'd need space for a structure akin to how people's bodies are kept in the matrix plus the land needed to feed them.

Anyway, rather off-topic, but I just found it a funny coincidence that someone would want to try this with piracy...
