There can be ridiculous things in game plot. Read: Nintendo.
The thing about horror games is that they're either a hit or miss. Usually the first one you play strikes you the most and the next ones in the series, because you have suspended disbelief the best (I feel the most afraid while playing FEAR while playing Dead Space is a walk in the park for me) with that particular series. Afterwards, every tactic that scared you in whatever the first one was didn't work or was less scary because you could see it coming a mile away.

Dragon Age: Origins. I can never tell if I'm doing the combat system correctly
That seems to be alot of peoples problem with DOA. They try to play it like an action rpg, and just control one character the whole time running up to things pounding the attack button. lol

When it's best played as a tactical rpg, throw it on nightmare, disable the tactics, and pause every few seconds giving orders to all your party members and then watch the action play out.

Take control of everything. But this will make the game ALOT easier, so you might have to set some self imposed restrictions, like i did. No designated healers or healing spells for mages (there are enough potions anyway), reload immediately when party members "go down" in battle (auto resurrections are lame anyway) and no storm spells indoors !! I think i had a few others, but i don't seem to remember right now. And don't use the overpowered dlc items also.
Few questions and comments (in order of how you listed them):
Why nightmare? How do I pause? Designated healer? NO HEALING MAGIC, I never seem to have enough potions. Why reload when party members die? What's a storm spell? I have no DLC.

Also, you wouldn't happen to play FF13?
