Playing as a Different Gender

Although I never do it my self, it is a role playing game. Isn't the point to be someone different?

If I'm going to watch a ass bounce around a screen for half a hour, I want it to be a fine dudes ass. I don't mind playing as a chick, my first Monk on Guildwars was a girl.

Only people who don't play games that give that option find it strange (in my opinion anyways)... My hardcore CoD friends mock me for playing Skyrim as a female Dark Elf, but my Skyrim/Fallout/Mass Effect playing friends play as the opposite gender about 80% of the time!

...and they mock me for having CoD friends...

Point: To each their own I guess!

I used to always play male characters in online games, since I was creeped on a lot.

I just generally enjoy the escapism of it. Though I'm finding in MMO's these days, people don't assume you are the same gender as your screen character.

Interesting you'd say that, because I still seem to notice people behaviour in a lot of cases still depends on them thinking you're the same sex as your avatar.

Although I guess it's possibly more obvious in some cases than others...

There's jokes around about men playing female characters and then doing things that an actual woman probably wouldn't do...

But then you're no longer reacting to just the avatar, but also how a person behaves...

True that. I suppose I should add that I played MMO's about 6 years ago now, so the supposition that a person isn't the same gender as their avatar wasn't as common back then.

Most games I play I have to be a different gender.
But, in customisable games I prefer to be a lady. I was a male Shepard when I went through ME again being evil, I just felt better being an evil guy (I have no idea why- maybe guys just get away with being jerks? Haha).

You made the character for aesthetic pursposes.

I agree with most of what you said except for this... how does that make it weird? Is it weird if I would rather look at Maxim magazine (girl pics) instead of Muscle Monthly (big muscly dudes)?

I meant more i think its weird when u play as a girl to stare at their ass for however many hours.. its weird; if you want to stare at a girls ass at least make it a real girl.

In most RPG's, I'll often have made a female character by my second or third go-around if gender doesn't matter. If gender does matter, I often start with female in the first place.

My favorite example of playing as a female is Halo 3, because choosing female brings no visual changes but gives you a nice high-pitched scream when you die, which always baffles people who never expect it or know that it's an option. They actually made it so playing female changed your appearance ever so slightly in Halo Reach, and my roommate's friends who I played with could not understand at all why I was playing as a female despite the facts that I told them about the scream and that it's Halo, so it really makes no difference what gender I am if I'm playing in first person. I then harassed them for playing so much Halo that they could actually pick up the differences between genders of space marines
