Playing as average Joe

So in my history of gaming, I always found I greatly enjoyed playing as a average joe soldier. Nothing special about me, just another dude with a gun and a mission.

I was wondering if anyone else liked playing as a average joe in a SP campaign and if they like the fact they are just normal soldiers in multiplayer.

So, do you like playing as a average joe character, or a badass character?

I feel I enjoy playing a faceless scrub sometimess. Anyone else?

I've never played a game where I was just an "average joe". Every game I have played involves the protagonist being incredibly skilled in at least one thing.

What about multiplayer? Do you enjoy the idea of being just another solider?

I really don't think multiplayer FPS games project the idea of being just a regular soldiers. Everyone is running around like a psychopath with no fear, pulling off no scope'd 360s, jumping into tanks and blowing everyone up before jumping out again, trash talking, spamming and being "pwnt".

If that's what regular soldiers are up to, then I'ma send myself off to Afghanistan.

I like being an average joe in stuff like Arma, where you work as part of a warmachine, rather than powering through all the other guys alone.

In games less focussed on realism, however, I'd much rather punch dragons in the face until they die.

Average joe soldier? That's even too much of a badass. I enjoy playing average joe MIT graduates.

Average joe.
And I want to tip you both about a game;

Space Hulk 2: Vengence of the Blood Angels

At the start of the game, you only recive orders what to do.
Towards the end, you give orders. Very good game.
And yet I still wager that the game involves the player character pulling off amazingly, dangerous and epic things like it was nothing.

I like purposely messing up my character's stats or not equipping new gear for the sake of having an average character- Being the average character lessens the pressure to be as efficient as possible, allowing me to play a game in a relaxed manner.

I like that. Actually that's exactly what I want to play as. It's a lot more easier to relate to and adds a great deal of realism. It's also a lot more special than being "special", since it's nowhere near as much used in games.

I'd add more of the fine aspects of it, but I'm slightly dumbfounded that this scratches quite deep to one of the ideas I've had for threads I've been planning to make.

I dislike the assumption that all of us Joe's are average. I'm awesome, which is at least 2 grades above average.
It comes with new outfit unlocks, and a new weapon or three.

Yes, i like this concept.

We could make a game where you get to go on a 15k pack march, then you get to spend two hours digging pits. Then you have an hour and a half piquet.

We can call it, Average Joe Soldier, the game.

Miranda talking about Shepard at the start of Mass Effect 2 makes me chuckle. Characters in games like Fallout and Oblivion are the blank slate and average joe if you will but they carry themselves to victory and success! everyone is astounded by thier skill and trusts them with amazing feats why you may ask?

...THEY CAN SAVE.

You be the judge.
You play as a Space Marine Terminator, meaning you are the elite of the elite warriors of the Imperium, equipped with the best armour and weapons they can muster. You fight Genestealers, also known as some of the most lethal melee warriors in the Warhammer 40K universe.

I'd hardly call that an average joe.

Anyway, the only games I know that actually have an average joe as a protagonist are Heavy Rain and the Silent Hill games. Especially in the latter it can be pretty harrowing knowing how vulnerable you are.

There should be a game where you do paperwork back at headquarters, drive a resupply truck, fix a tank engine, dig a latrine, run a supply depot, and the 50 billion other jobs that the vast majority of soldiers end up doing without ever firing a shot at the enemy.

There's a great bit in Band Of Brothers were one of the officers complains that he's got three combat jumps and he's yet to shoot his gun at the enemy. Guy is on the front lines of one of the biggest invasions in the history of mankind... and never fired his weapon in anger.

I prefer playing as an unnamed soldier in games with well defined characters, that way I can project my own personality onto them rather than having to try to play as someone else.

Following on from the warhammer 40k example. Play Dark Heresy, its a table top roleplaying game where you are playing as just an average human who may or may not contain some potential in their service to the Inquisition. A human being, in a universe of genetically engineered super soldiers, unspeakable horrors of the warp, aliens with unrivalled psychic might, overwhelming numbers or pure adaptability and your a guy, with a flashlight or a sharpstick. Maybe some armour if your lucky.

When I first played Star Wars: Battlefront I loved the fact that I was just a footsoldier in a greater conflict, rather than Muscles McGraw - the gun-toting hero who single handedly saved the universe with his collection of 18,000 slightly different guns. It's more common these days, which is cool but I don't like the Call of Duty way of using it, where your character is one of these low-ranking foot soldiers, but you end up saving the world by yourself anyway.

We all feel like that sometimes, Mr. Freeman.
